First, I’ll describe the nature of concept to market and the challenges that face product design engineers.
Next we’ll look at the implications of these challenges- to both you and your organization.
After that, were going to look at how two companies sought out and applied next generation CAD and the impact it had on their employees and the business.
And finally, to wrap things up, we’ll have a question and answer session.
With all that said, let’s get going!
What is Concept to Market? <<pause>>
The idea of Concept to Market is the entire lifecycle of a product, from idea conception, planning, design and manufacturing- till it reaches the hands of the consumer.
Razor USA is a great example
What would you do if the demand for your product went from 100,000 units a day to almost nothing within a span of several months?
<<click>>
That’s exactly what happened to Razor USA and their flagship kick scooter during the Christmas season of 2000. The market had become oversaturated and sales plummeted. Razor was not content to be a “one hit wonder” or produce endless variations of the original product.
Razor USA was able to survive– and thrive – in a difficult and competitive market. They did so first by clearly defining their target market – then developing a portfolio of products. They defined their business more broadly – they were in “the wheels business.”
And from that strategy came a string of successful products in various categories: the original scooter, the two-wheeled Rip Stick, the three-wheeled Power Wing,
and their latest, the electric powered Crazy Cart, a wildly popular, viral product that was a big hit this last holiday
Razor built an efficient concept to market process that turns good ideas into great products-quickly.
And at the front of that process was tackling the challenges of their product design.
Throughout the lifecycle of products, the engineers as well as the organization will be faced with various challenges.
If not addressed quickly, the implications to the organization and the engineer can be drastic
Lets look at some of the key industry challenges relating to the process of product design, that effect organization's like Razor USA .
1. Time consumption in making design revisions. Sometimes simple changes can take up to days to complete because making a simple change in a design part might cause functional problems in related parts.
2. The difficulty in editing imported models is another challenge that most engineers face-- as they are unfamiliar with models not designed by them.
3. Costly mistakes in the design stage that can lead to product rework and recalls .
For the organization, the implications includes,
Frequent change orders can lead to poor design and mistakes
Product error that can lead to high scrap and rework
Delays in product launches that can negatively impact a companies reputation
Overall design quality suffering as resources are used for putting out fires- and not for actual design
All of which ultimately leads to customer dissatisfaction and eventually-loss of business!
For the engineer, it means
Having to work late nights and weekends due to extra work loads
Having to always reacting to emergencies situations like change orders rather than designing effective
Making an increased number of errors because always in a hurray
All of which leads to high stress and low job satisfaction
NOTE- Partners- If platform is capable. We recommend a live poll at this point. This will help keep audience attention and also give insight (capture able and useful for lead scoring) as to the prospects specific challenge. Try the poll questions below
I would like to pause for a minute to reflect on the great information presented thus far.
The question I have for you is:
What is the most significant challenge impacting the way you design and develop your products?
Dissatisfied customersdue poor quality
Increasing costsdue to high scrap, rework
Delaysimpacting reputation/profitability
Job Stressdue to heavy workload
5. Job dissatisfaction
<<note>> the answers to this poll will most likely help you identify whether your engaged with a manager/owner or engineer/user
Let us look at Trlby Innovative, a company that has been successful in addressing product design challenges to stay ahead of their competition.
Trlby Innovative was founded by Bob Miletti in 1981.
Many of Trlby’s product development projects involves medical devices, outdoor furniture designs and packaging equipment like the Millipore Blood Bag Machine shown here.
Trlby holds over 13 US patents and has won the coveted Industrial Design Excellence (IDEA) Award in 1989 for outstanding product design.
The journey for Trlby’s design has not been without challenges.
<<Animation>>
Bob was very familiar the current technology.
In fact he got used to fixing every feature with every modification of the design. This was ok if he was the one who created the model.
However, when working with imported models, he encountered a lot of difficulty and the process becomes time consuming.
As a business owner and designer, These challenges soon became a major concern.
<<Animation>>
Long wait time for the customer while changes are being made adds to delay in the decision making process.
Extra time spent on existing projects leads to lost of revenue for the company and means reduced time for prospecting for new projects too
The next couple of slides demonstrates how Triby Innovative was able to move ahead of its competitors by being faster, more responsive, and flexible.
This proposed design was approved by Trlby’s client in the same meeting because Trlby was able to make the required changes in real time in the presence of the client.
The first was to change the chair angle to a degree required by the client.
The client wanted to see how the slight change to the angle would affect the overall design for the Bouncer Chair.
The next change was to extend the chair’s handle to flush with the edge of the chair’s backrest which Trlby was also to immediately able to show the change in real time with ease.
The last request was to alter the height of the chair. This was also done quickly and without much difficulty.
The speed of which Trlby was able to make those changes gave Trlby a great advantage in allowing the client to immediately approve the changes thus moving ahead quickly- sealing the deal faster!
Trlby Innovative was able to DO MORE in LESS TIME leading to client satisfaction.
Being able to easily explore design options and allowing client to see changes immediately in real-time has been a key factor to Trlby’s success.
Unlike Trlby, many organization faces a huge challenge getting from concept to market quickly.
Doing that in less time and reduced cost seems almost impossible to achieve.
Traditional approach to product design is complex and inefficient. Due to the complex nature of the traditional CAD, it is prone to mistakes and failure.
When an engineer makes a mistake, it comes back with tenfold the work for that engineer.
The process tends to hinder getting products to the market on schedule.
These inefficiencies becomes a NIGHTMARE for engineering and marketing.
The impact to the organization can be summarized into 4 key areas.
Projects ended up costly due to high scrap and rework<<click>>
Delays in product launches tarnished organization reputation<<click>>
Quality of design affected as resources are not focused in real design activity<<click>>
Customers are unsatisfied as their expectations are often not met<<click>>
So, the key question now is … how do I get my new product concept to market faster and at a fraction of my cost?
The answer is NEXT GENERATION 3D CAD.
But what is next generation 3D CAD?
Before we look into that, let us look at the 2 different types of CAD.
History-based modeling and Direct modeling.
History-based modeling requires that the engineer to define parameters and constrains at the start of the design process. Calculation is then ordered sequentially and has high interdependencies between parts in the model. When more parts are added to the model, the flexibility becomes constrained and making changes become difficult.
In contrast, direct modeling is more flexible allowing changes to be made easily. There are far fewer interdependencies between parts and calculations are synchronized and ordered based on needs.
Next Generation CAD addresses the flaws of traditional CAD allowing fast and easy manipulation of design and its parts.
It is flexible and changes to model are realized immediately giving full control to the engineer.
Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology is Next Generation CAD.
With Solid Edge there are minimal interdependencies. With minimal dependencies, there are minimal failures. And furthermore, there aren’t feature failures because they don’t exist here.
Overall, there are far fewer constraints when an engineer wants to experiment with the design and that means flexibility in the design process supporting the exploratory needs of design engineers.
With Solid Edge you can do more in less time. The flexibility of Solid Edge allows you to design faster and easier.
Making changes to design is a breeze and everything happens in real-time.
Solid Edge is the next generation CAD that will make a difference in the way you design.
Here is what our customer, Trlby Innovation has to say…
<<Partners- Play Kimball Case Study Video>>
As you can see Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology gives Bob an edge over his competition by allowing him to design faster and easier.
And lets hear from another customer - Razor USA
“In our industry, it’s important to be able to vet out design ideas as quickly as possible,” says Bob Hadley R & D manager for Razor. He estimates that for every 100 ideas, about 10 make it to the prototype stage for validation. Of these perhaps only one concept gets to market in full production. And only one out of every twenty commercial products might be considered a blockbuster.
Razor USA uses Siemens PLM Software’s Solid Edge to design and develop their products.
Hadley says that one of the key advantages of Solid Edge is that it enables the team to design quickly and communicate clearly with manufacturers in China. Both factors enable Razor to streamline their prototyping process and reduce their time to market by as much as 50%, when compared to earlier techniques.
The Crazy Cart, shown here, is yet another incredible success for Razor- winning the coveted 2014 Outdoor Toy of the Year award
Trlby and Razor USA are a testament to consistently achieving significant ROI from designing their products with Solid Edge.
