This document introduces software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) concepts. It discusses challenges with traditional networking and how SDN and NFV address these by decoupling the control and data planes, making the network programmable through APIs, and virtualizing network functions. It then provides examples of open source SDN platforms like OpenDaylight, Open vSwitch, and OpenStack that enable building virtual networks and service chains.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN): Unleashing the Power of the NetworkRobert Keahey
It goes without saying that cloud computing has dramatically reshaped the information technology services landscape. Virtualization is unleashing the power of commodity-based technology and open source communities are building new applications and services at an astonishing rate, but networking has lagged behind compute and storage in virtualization and automation. We’ve become accustomed to specialized networking silicon, complex operating systems and highly distributed control planes. For the most part, we’ve accepted the model along with its high costs.
All that is changing! New protocols such as OpenFlow are freeing the network control plane from proprietary operating systems and hardware platforms. We are entering a new era where customers control the features – and release schedules – of new, open networking applications that address the needs of the mega-scale world.
A lot of work is required to realize the potential of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), where we can enjoy the benefits derived from “software automating software.” This talk will examine some of the history that led us to the point where current networking architectures are no longer viable for cloud computing at mega-scale. We’ll take a look at the basics of SDN and some of its key elements – OpenFlow, network virtualization, and orchestration – along with some of the initiatives and companies that are setting the stage for the next generation of networking.

Understanding and deploying Network VirtualizationSDN Hub
Analogous to server virtualization, Network Virtualization decouples and isolates virtual networks (i.e. tenant) from the underlying network hardware. One of the key value propositions of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is to enable the provisioning and operation of virtual networks. This tutorial motivates the need for network virtualization, describes the high-level requirements, provides an overview of all architectural approaches, and gives you a clear picture of the vendor landscape.

Midokura OpenStack Day Korea Talk: MidoNet Open Source Network Virtualization...Dan Mihai Dumitriu
OpenStack deployments for public or private clouds require overlay networking. Due to the scale and rate of change of virtual resources, it isn't practical to rely on traditional network constructs and isolation mechanims. Today's deployments require performance, resilience, and high availability to be considered truly production-ready. In this session, we deep dive into the MidoNet architecture, and process of sending a data packet across an OpenStack environment through a network overlay. A distributed architecture implements logical constructs that are used to build networks without a single point of failure, all while adding network functionality in a highly-scalable manner. Network functions are applied in a single virtual hop. By applying network services right at the ingress host, the network is free from unnecessary clogging and bottlenecks by avoiding additional hops. Packets reach their destination more efficiently with the single virtual hop. After this session, the audience will understand how distributed architectures allow efficient networking with routing decisions and network services applied at the edge. Also, the audience will understand how it is easier to scale clouds when the network intelligence is distributed.

Pushing Packets - How do the ML2 Mechanism Drivers Stack UpJames Denton
Architecting a private cloud to meet the use cases of its users can be a daunting task. How do you determine which of the many L2/L3 Neutron plugins and drivers to implement? Does network performance outweigh reliability? Are overlay networks just as performant as VLAN networks? The answers to these questions will drive the appropriate technology choice.
In this presentation, we will look at many of the common drivers built around the ML2 framework, including LinuxBridge, OVS, OVS+DPDK, SR-IOV, and more, and will provide performance data to help drive decisions around selecting a technology that's right for the situation. We will discuss our experience with some of these technologies, and the pros and cons of one technology over another in a production environment.

SOCRadar Research Team: Latest Activities of IntelBrokerSOCRadar
The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) has suffered an alleged data breach after a notorious threat actor claimed to have exfiltrated data from its systems. Infamous data leaker IntelBroker posted on the even more infamous BreachForums hacking forum, saying that Europol suffered a data breach this month.
The alleged breach affected Europol agencies CCSE, EC3, Europol Platform for Experts, Law Enforcement Forum, and SIRIUS. Infiltration of these entities can disrupt ongoing investigations and compromise sensitive intelligence shared among international law enforcement agencies.
However, this is neither the first nor the last activity of IntekBroker. We have compiled for you what happened in the last few days. To track such hacker activities on dark web sources like hacker forums, private Telegram channels, and other hidden platforms where cyber threats often originate, you can check SOCRadar’s Dark Web News.

In the Software Defined Networking architecture, the
control and data planes are decoupled, network
intelligence and state are logically centralized, and the
underlying network infrastructure is abstracted from
the applications.

2.2.
An Open Standard behind SDN
OpenFlow enables networks to evolve, by giving a remote
controller the power to modify the behavior of network
devices, through a well-defined "forwarding instruction
set". The growing OpenFlow ecosystem now includes
routers, switches, virtual switches, and access points
from a range of vendors.

20. Programmable Flow Table
● Extensive flow matching capabilities:
– Layer 1 – Tunnel ID, In Port, QoS priority, skb mark
– Layer 2 – MAC address, VLAN ID, Ethernet type
– Layer 3 – IPv4/IPv6 fields, ARP
– Layer 4 – TCP/UDP, ICMP, ND
● One or more actions:
– Output to port (port range, flood, mirror)
– Discard, Resubmit to table x
– Packet Mangling (Push/Pop VLAN header, TOS, ...)
– Send to controller, Learn
23. Network Virtualization
What do we need?
1. Virtualize network topology on Layer 2-7
- Run previous workload without changes
2. Decouple logical from physical topology
- A virtual network should run anywhere
3. Allow for isolated tentant networks
- Multiple customers/applications per network
4. Provide APIs to manage network abstraction
- Orchestrate & automate
31. NFV
Problem Statement
● Non commodity hardware
● Physical install per appliance per site
● Large development barriers
● Innovation constraints & limited competition
32. NFV
What do we want?
1. Virtualization
– Run functions on scaleable commodity hardware
2. Abstraction
– Limited dependency on physical layer
3. Programmability
– APIs to implement automation
4. Orchestration
– Centralized orchestration
– Reduced maintenance
34. Who is behind NFV?
● Originally operator driven
– ETSI – European Telecommunications Standards
Institute
● Evolved into a generic concept
● Open to any company
35. Service Chaining
Moving network functions into software means that building a
service chain no longer requires acquiring hardware.

46. To produce the ubiquitous open source
cloud computing platform that will meet the
needs of public and private cloud providers
regardless of size, by being simple to
implement and massively scalable.
51. Network APIs are there.
Now what?
Applications do not care about
subnets, ports, or virtual networks.
52. Application Centric APIs
Allow application administrators to express
networking requirements using group and policy
abstraction.
Leave the technical implementation to the
network.
53. Terminology
Connectivity Group: Collection of endpoints (MAC/IP on vNIC)
with a common policy.
Policy: Set of Policy Rule objects describing policy. Policies may
be applied between groups, or alternatively, applied to a single
group using provide / consume relations.
Policy Rule: Specific <classifier, action> pair, part of a policy.
– Classifier: L4 ports + protocol
– Actions: Permit / Deny, QoS action, service chain redirection
54. Policy as a Service
● Group is providing service as
defined by policy
● Service mostly unaware of
consumer
55. Policy between Groups
● Policy defined between pair of groups
● Policy may apply to multiple relationships
● Producer is aware of consumer
