 A shift from ‘Industrial design’ to Creative Design’
 strong focus on design thinking and design process, as well as
 core design, IT and fabrication skills
 real-world projects from Day 1
 work with local, national and international industries & communities
 2 research masters students in 2012
Performing Arts
 About 24-32 students per annum
 Practical and academic programme aimed at the creative, problem-
 solving student with love of theatre, performance, self-expression
 Common first year: then 2 streams: Acting or Theatre Design
 First degree course in Ireland in Theatre Design
 Good links with local theatre and arts community (Blue
 Raincoat/Model)
 Developing formal links with Ireland’s National Theatre: Abbey
 No research students yet; staff active in research and publishing
 International links with Hungary (Debrecen)

Early Childhood Care and Education
 About 64-78 students per annum
 Strong emphasis on interdisciplinary and integrated study: closely
 linked to SCP programme, but has own professional identity
 Ireland has a professionalising ECCE workforce but a long way
 behind Finland!
 Broad range of professional opportunities: care, research, project
 work, entrepreneurship, management, further study, teaching
 Good international links: Boston, South Africa, Sweden, Scotland . .

Custodial care
 Programme in partnership with Irish Prison Service: compulsory for
 all new recruits
 500+ students on programme – about 20% of irish prison staff
 completed programme
 2 year programme – combination of prison training and social
 science (sociology, criminology, psychology, ethics, health studies)
 Strong emphasis on development of reflexive and critical
 professional prison staff
 Developing research activity in criminology/penology
 International links: USA, Sweden, UK . .
‘Semester 6’
 30 ECTS semester length programme
 Flexibility and multi-disciplinary working space
 Performing arts/creative design/ECCE
 Collaborative projects/internships/international
 experiences/entrepreneurial projects/innovative modules
 In 2nd year – still learning!
 Has strong national interest – possibly replicate in other institutions
