This document discusses positive and negative feedback in coaching. It notes that while positive feedback is important for building confidence, negative feedback also has its place when delivered constructively. Too much negative feedback can lower self-esteem and increase fear of failure in athletes. Different athletes and coaches have varying preferences in coaching styles, from very positive to more critical. Feedback should provide insights to help athletes improve, while minimizing anxiety. A balanced approach using both positive and negative feedback from multiple sources may be most effective.

Coaching for Character and Sportsmanship
A coach's character is one of the most important aspects of their credibility. Social factors that indicate the importance of educating young people about morality and character are paramount. Character and the professional responsibility that coaches bear in this area should be stressed.
Character is defined, and the idea that developing good character habits requires repeated practice is proposed. Coaches of character are described as those who help young people know what's right, instill the desire to do what's right, and guide them in the process of doing right. Sportsmanship is simply good character when participating in sport: It is about respect for opponents, officials, teammates, coaches, and for the game itself.
Three steps for teaching character and sportsmanship are presented: identify the principles of character, teach the principles of character, and provide opportunities to practice. Principles of character are identified: respect, responsibility, caring, honesty, fairness, and citizenship. Examples of life and sport actions associated with these principles are provided.
Six strategies for teaching principles of character are presented and discussed. They include creating a moral team environment, modeling moral behavior for athletes, and setting rules for good behavior. Strategies for explaining and discussing moral behavior (including the problem of hazing), using and teaching ethical decision making, and motivating athletes to develop good character are also presented. Ideas for establishing routines and rewarding good character are proposed as ways to provide athletes with practice for developing character.
Coaching Diverse Athletes
Diversity among athletes and how coaches must deal with it provides recommendations for coaches in dealing with issues related to young peoples' differences in maturation, cultural background, gender, and physical and mental abilities. Developmental characteristics are identified for youth in early, middle, and late adolescence. Ideas for understanding and contending with physical maturational differences in young athletes are outlined.
Issues in working with athletes with diverse cultural heritages are described. Problems of prejudice and stereotyping are presented. The concept of culturally responsive coaching is also described. Gender equity issues and guidelines for coaches are presented. Coaches are urged to be sensitive to stereotyping based on gender and to get to know athletes, male and female, as unique individuals.
Sexual harassment, an unethical and illegal behavior, is to be avoided. Behaviors that may constitute sexual harassment are cited. Sexual relations between a coach and player are illegal in an educational organization and are described as an abuse of power, unethical, and irresponsible. Issues of homosexuality and sexual orientation are discussed. Homophobia is addressed as a prominent and destructive problem in sport, and behaviors ...

Sport psychology is a proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organizations.
What Is Sports Psychology?
Sports psychology is the study of how psychological factors influence sports, athletic performance, exercise, and physical activity. Sports psychologists investigate how participating in sports can improve health and well-being. They also help athletes utilize psychology to improve their athletic performance and mental wellness.
A sports psychologist doesn't just work with elite and professional athletes either. This type of professional also helps non-athletes and everyday exercisers learn how to enjoy sports and stick to an exercise program. They utilize exercise and athletics to enhance people’s lives and mental well-being
Sports psychology is a relatively young discipline in psychology; the first research lab devoted to the topic opened in 1925.2 The first U.S. lab closed a short while later (in the early 1930s) and American research did not resume in this area until the late 1960s when there was a revival of interest.
In 1965, the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) was established.3 By the 1970s, sports psychology had been introduced as a university course offered at educational institutions throughout North America.
By the 1980s, sports psychology became the subject of a more rigorous scientific focus. Researchers began to explore how psychology could be used to improve athletic performance. They also looked at how exercise could be utilized to improve mood and lower stress levels
Types of Sports Psychologists
Just as there are different types of psychologists—such as clinical psychologists, developmental psychologists, and forensic psychologists—there are also different types of sports psychologists.
Educational Sports Psychologists
An educational sports psychologist uses psychological methods to help athletes improve sports performance.4 This includes teaching them how to use certain techniques such as imagery, goal setting, or self talk to perform better on the court or field.
Clinical Sports Psychologists
Clinical sports psychologists work with athletes who have mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. This work involves using strategies from both sports psychology and psychotherapy.5 A clinical sports psychologist helps athletes improve their mental health and sports performance at the same time.
Exercise Psychologists
An exercise psychologist works with non-athlete clients or everyday exercisers to help them learn how to make working out a habit. This work can include some of the same techniques used by other sports psychologists, such as goal setting, practicing mindfulness, and the use of motivational techniques.
Uses of Sports Psychology
Contemporary sports psychology is a diverse field and there are a number

We will explore a strategic proposal to enhance parking and traffic management at Lincoln Financial Field, aiming to improve the overall fan experience and operational efficiency. This comprehensive plan addresses existing challenges and leverages innovative solutions to create a smoother and more enjoyable experience for our fans.
Slide 2:
Picture this: It’s a crisp fall afternoon, driving towards Lincoln Financial Field. The atmosphere is electric—tailgaters grilling, fans in Eagles jerseys creating a sea of green and white. The air buzzes with camaraderie and anticipation. You park, join the throng, and make your way to your seat. The stadium roars as the Eagles take the field, sending chills down your spine. Each play is a thrilling dance of strategy and skill. This is what being an Eagles fan is all about—the joy, the pride, and the shared experience.
Slide 3:
But now, the day is marred by frustration. The excitement wanes as you struggle to find a parking spot. The congestion is overwhelming, and tempers flare. The delays mean you miss the pre-game excitement, the tailgate camaraderie, and even the opening kick-off. After the game, the joy of victory or the shared solace of defeat is overshadowed by the stress of navigating out of the parking lot. The gridlock, honking horns, and endless waiting drain the energy and joy from what should have been an unforgettable experience.
Our proposal aims to eliminate these frustrations, ensuring that from arrival to departure, your experience is extraordinary. Efficient parking and smooth traffic flow are key to maintaining the high spirits and excitement that make game days special.
Slide 4:
The Philadelphia Eagles are not just a premier NFL team; they are an integral part of the community, hosting games, concerts, and various events at Lincoln Financial Field. Our state-of-the-art stadium is designed to provide a world-class experience for every attendee. Slide 5:
Recent trends show an increasing demand for efficient event logistics. Our customer feedback has consistently highlighted frustrations with parking and traffic. Surveys indicate that a significant number of fans are dissatisfied with the current parking situation. Comparisons with other venues like Citizens Bank Park and Wells Fargo Center reveal that we lag in terms of parking efficiency and convenience. These insights underscore the urgent need for innovation to meet and exceed fan expectations.

2. Overview
S Positive vs negative feedback. It
is a very critical and heavily
analyzed part of coaching.
Although generally, negative
feedback from coach to athlete
is despised of by the general
sporting community, does it
have its place in athletes minds,
to make/help them perform
better with the pressure of
coach and environment?. Is
having both forms but more
negative in a coaches styles
also genius? Source A
3. The Positive Side
S As it is known widely within the coaching community positive
feedback is crucial for an athlete to understand that they are
doing the right thing and understand concepts, and that their
coaches are delighted with the execution of the skill. It not only
helps by means of someone believing in you, but is incredibly
strong in raising an athletes level of self esteem, self belief
and confidence.
S Positive feedback that is delivered correctly and honestly by
the coach is what the athlete needs so that they understand
that the coach knows exactly what they are talking about and
are critically analyzing the athletes movements.
4. Continued
S Positive coaches who provide copious amounts of
positivity usually reside an extremely close relationship
with the athlete which also can bring a close net
dimension to an athletes performance. Knowing that not
only is there a coach on the sideline but a friend, helps
the athlete to know that if they make a mistake there is a
friend there to talk to about the situation in an open,
honest and truthful manner.
S Example of positive feedback “That’s great John, your
hitting your targets every single time, keep it up !”
5. The Coach
S Every coach has their own personal psychology,
strategies and dominion in how they do things. Some
coaches are extremely friendly and humorous with their
athletes, whilst others belief it is a job and athletes are
not friends and the relationship shouldn‟t exceed coach
to athlete. Positive coaches have athletes that are
extremely high in confidence and believe that they are
unstoppable, and on the other side the athletes believe
that they are not good enough or fear being criticized so
lift and surprise themselves in the pressure.
6. The Coach perspective
S “In my experience, the best coaches are flexible and able
to adapt to the requirements of different situations. This
will nearly always involve criticism or punishment as well
as praise, but will rely primarily on a positive approach in
order to motivate players to perform at their best.” (Lee
Crust)
S Author of article Source D lecturer and researcher in sport and
exercise psychology
7. The Athlete
S Along with a coaches perspective the athlete themselves
also have the choice of whom should coach them. Some
athletes have very particular and varying tastes in types of
coaching styles. Some like coaches that are extremely
positive and supportive with boundless positivity, whilst
others like coaches who are tough and negative and push
them to their own limits. Although, some athletes have
extremely strong hearts, and but only need to push
themselves, whilst others need that push and positive
reinforcement to help them to succeed.

8. Negative Feedback
S Negative feedback effects the athlete in an extreme way.
With ongoing negative feedback athletes begin to feel a
sense of uselessness, and their self esteem and self
worth is lowered as a direct result. Fear also comes into
play when performing as a result of this form of coaching.
S Athletes who believe that they will become under scrutiny
if they fail or make a mistake fail under pressure as their
minds are not focusing on the task at hand but on the
ramifications of if and when they do fail. This leads to not
only low self worth, but even at worst the decision to quit
the sport altogether.
9. Continued
S Although there is a need
for anxiety within
performing, too much
anxiety (fear) leads to
poor performance.
Source F
10. Example of negative
coaching/feedback
S After Kelly Sotherton achieved a Bronze medal in the
Olympic Heptathlon in Athens 2004 she was blasted by
her coach, Charles van Commenee who described most
of her performances as „mediocre‟ and criticised her for
not tapping into her reserves. (Source D)
11. Continued..
S Along with the athletes mindset the environment around
the athlete/s plays a role in coaching. A coach that
employs an extremely negative vibe and coaching style is
not only viewed by the athletes but also the witnesses
such as other coaches, players, officials and parents or
supporters. This can effect not only the coach but the
teams chemistry, clubs reputation, and even lead to
violence and legal consequences.
Source
G
12. Neutral Feedback
S Some coaches utilize the neutral feedback in being both
positive or negative feedback. Although both forms can
be extremely detailed and instructive, neutral gives little
detail and gives the athlete little to work off such as
“Good work”. Athletes need deep insightful criticism on
the skill or task in order to become more competent at
the skill.
13. Other Athletes
S Not only is the coach the only source of feedback. Other
athletes can also be utilized such as having two other
athletes being on opposing sides to view from another
varying perspective and giving constructive feedback
back to the athlete, as well as feedback from the coach.
This approach of feedback being both positive and
negative is useful as it allows athletes to see another
point of view.
14. Conclusion
S In Conclusion I believe that positive feedback when
coaching is most beneficial in terms of self esteem and
motivation. But there is a place within coaching for
negative feedback because as long as it is constructive
and gives the athlete some direction and education.
Negative coaches may seem angry and irritated but they
may just be fantastic tacticians and have a great
understanding of the technique or skill.
