CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) are man-made substances that were formerly used in aerosols and refrigerants. CFCs deplete the ozone layer by breaking ozone molecules into oxygen when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. A single CFC molecule can destroy 100,000 ozone molecules in its lifetime. An international agreement called the Montreal Protocol was implemented to phase out CFC production and allow the ozone layer to recover. While CFCs are being eliminated, continued monitoring is important to ensure protection of the ozone layer.
