On the one side Open Access to quality research is much needed for the continent to find solutions to local problems and to remain sustainable. On the other side of the coin, research conducted about burning issues in Africa are not published online, making it inaccessible to the rest of the world. In other instances, research is conducted with funders money from outside, which results in the research being published elsewhere. Although Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most-populous continent, its research output is very low. In this presentation I will try to give an overview of current research output in terms of journal publishing on the African continent, and I will look at challenges faced in moving to an Open Access publishing model.
