This document summarizes a presentation on approaches to preserving print research collections through increased collaboration and shared responsibility. It discusses models from North America and Europe where print collections are concentrated in a smaller number of institutions through cooperative agreements. The benefits of shared collections include reducing duplication and risks to materials held by only one institution. National bibliographic data and consortial partnerships are seen as enabling effective coordination of print collections across organizations.

John Cox NUI GalwayHow academic libraries position themselves in their parent institutions is vital to their recognition, resourcing and prospects. This paper will look at the progress, opportunities, barriers and dilemmas for libraries as they seek to position themselves optimally in the organisation. It will take account of both positive developments and negative factors, arguing that strong connectivity with the wider institutional agenda is key to changing perceptions and ensuring that the library is not taken for granted or sold short. Otherwise the library may represent a squeezed middle, feeling the pressure from all sides but not reaping the benefits of its transformation.

What are the key drivers behind the dramatic growth in library-based publishing? This session explores differences and similarities through three case studies from different countries: Sweden, the UK and the USA. The presenters will describe the forces that are changing the roles of their parent libraries and show how these are also shaping the nature of their publishing programmes. They will also discuss some of the opportunities they see for the future of libraries as publishers and the challenges these new entrants are encountering.
OA in the Library Collection: The Challenge of Identifying and Managing Open ...NASIG
Librarians, researchers, and the general public have largely embraced the concept of open access (OA). Yet, incorporating OA resources into existing discovery and tracking systems is often a complicated process. Open access material can be delivered through a variety of publishing or archival mechanisms, creating certain challenges, particularly for those managing e-resources. Although an increasing proportion of research output is becoming open access each year, organization and discovery of these resources remains imperfect.
The debate between the relative merits of Green and Gold OA is regularly discussed in academic circles but less attention is devoted towards Hybrid OA and the challenges inherent in this model. Most major publishers offer open access through one or more of these models, but open access metadata standards seem to be lacking among these content providers. The presenters will discuss some of these challenges identified in the literature and through other mechanisms, including data gathered by NISO and an original survey. By identifying these issues, the scholarly communication community can work together to improve discovery for end users.

Collections unbound: collection directions and the RLUK collective collectionlisld
A presentation given to RLUK Members' meeting at the University of Warwick.
The library identity has been closely bound with its collection. However this is changing as research and learning behaviours evolve in a network environment. There are three interesting trends. First, atttention is shifting from a library-centric view of a locally owned collection to a user-centred view of a facilitated collection in places where the library can add value. Second, there is growing emphasis on support for creation, for the process of research, as well as for the products, the article or book. And third, we are seeing a changing perspective on the historic core, the print book collection. Increasingly, this is being seen in collective ways as institutions manage down print, or think about its management in cooperative settings, or retire collections as space is reconfigured around research and learning experiences. This presentation also provides preliminary findings for the analysis being carried out by OCLC Research of the RLUK collective collection.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable.
