2. What are Professional Learning communities (PLCs)? Research-based practice of effective schools Teachers meet in collaborative teams Share data and effective strategies Answer 4 key questions: What do we want students to know and be able to do? (Standards/Curriculum Mapping) How do we know if they know and can do it? (Common assessments) How do we respond when they don’t? (RTI) How do we respond when they do? (Enrichment)
3. PLCs and the strategic plan A key recommended strategy “District, school, grade level and department teams will have adequate time, tools, strategies, training, and resources to communicate, collaborate and monitor progress.” Teachers do not have collaborative time within the teacher work day Considered a “break through” strategy on the road from good to great!
4. What process was used? September 2010- Concept introduced to the District Leadership Team and subcommittee formed October 2010- February 2011- Subcommittee work with an initial recommendation (schedule swap) March 2011- Recommendation communicated and stakeholder input solicited April 2011- Solicited proposals and recommendations from staff and stakeholders May 2011- DLT reviewed 16 proposals- recommended 1 May 2011- DLT met again to finalize recommendation May 11, 2011- Proposal presented to board for approval
