This document provides a weekly schedule and summary of work completed by a student for their Foundation Portfolio in Media Studies unit. Over the course of several months, the student worked on tasks analyzing magazines, creating mood boards, magazine layouts, photography plans, and draft magazine covers and spreads. They took photos, edited images, designed magazine pages in software like Photoshop and InDesign, and made corrections to their preliminary and main projects. By the end, the student had completed covers, contents pages, and double page spreads for both a preliminary and main magazine project.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

have also resized it along with my streamline. I have also began to add
in a cover line and made additions to my barcode including my
magazines website and social media links.
Monday 19th December I have now taken the photo for my main front cover. Before using the
image I cropped it and applied edits to it. After adding it in I resized
and positioned it.
Tuesday 20th December Now I have made touches to the image for my front cover and created
an album cover to add into the barcode and made alterations to the
cover lines and main headline.
Tuesday 3rd January I have since changed the masthead to white and removed the glow
5. from Photoshop and added a drop shadow. I then used the burn tool to
darken the effects on the photo as they had lightened the image too
much.
Thursday 4th January I have added an image for one of the cover lines and have also added in
a puff promotion for free concert tickets. I have also aligned all of the
components so that they look much neater.
Friday 5th January I have begun the contents page for my main task. To the front cover I
have added the background, title, and have begun adding features.

well aligned and completed multiple features for the magazine. I have
also added a page number and web address.
Thursday 12th January I have now added three more featuresto my contents page for the
main task.
Friday 13th January To the contents page for my main task I have added in an editorial. To
do this I first needed to have a photo taken of myself. I then edited the
photo on Adobe Bridge and added a vignette in Photoshop before
adding it to my contents page. After doing this I scanned in my
signature and cropped out the background then added it to the page.
To complete the Editorial I included my name and added the editorial
text.
Tuesday 24th January I've set up my DPS template on InDesign.
Wednesday 25th January I have now added to my DPS on InDesign a background and added in
three columns. Within the columns I have added in the interview for
the text, a drop capital. I have also added in the Masthead and the
website and page number at the bottom.
6. Thursday 26th January I have now changed the page number at the bottom right of the page. I
also added the page number to the bottom left of the page, using text
wrap to wrap the text around it. Another thing that I have included is a
pull quote at the top of the article using a quote from the article.
Wednesday 1st February To add to my double page spread for my main task I have taken a
picture and used Photoshop to remove the background using the quick
selection tool, magic wand tool, background eraser tool and the eraser
tool. I then used the refine edge tool to smoothen the edges before
adding it into my double page spread.
28th February I decided that my main image on my DPS needed to be bigger as to
repeat (Steve Neale)the conventions of ‘The Source magazine’ where
in my double page spread of inspiration has the artist going slightly
onto the left page of the DPS and therefore I made the image bigger.
1st March With my DPS nearcompletion there were still some corrections / certain
things that needed doingto it in order to make it complete. The social media
logos in the bottom right of the second page of my double page spread were
not in line with the page numberon the left. I felt it was important to ensure
that the conventions on my double page spread and other pages aligned and
so used the frame for the columns to align the social media logos with the page
number.
8th March Although I had finished the article on my double page spread, I thought that it
was lackingElectronic Media and so reduced the size of the text in the article
to 13pt and added ‘*Visit our Facebook page TheLean Musicto watch the full
interview*’
7. 15th March With the background for my main task front cover I felt that the stars were
slightly distractingand so decided to change it. To find a new, perhaps more
suitable background, I took to google and began searching and found an
aurora background and so applied it to my front cover and removed the
background with stars
22nd March With the cover lines down the side of my front cover for my main task I
realised that they were not correctly aligned and so used the rulertool and
lined them all up with my masthead as well as moving my masthead overin
order to make it more central.
24th March With my main task front cover I came to the conclusion that the previous main
image that featured on the front cover was inadequateand did not fit the
specification/ stereotype of the hip-hop genre. I therefore made the decision
to remove the main image and thus proceeded to take newimages of the artist
wearing more stereotypical orappropriate clothing. For example, within one
of my front covers of inspiration, taken from ‘The Source’ magazine, that
feature hip-hop artist ’50 Cent’, ’50 Cent’ can be seen wearing a cap. Taking
inspiration from ‘The Source’ and elsewhere I came to the realisation that the
artist within my front cover should be wearing a cap and so photographed
them as such.
25TH March The main image for my main task front cover, despite havingtaken the image,
was yet to be complete as there were edits that needed applying. Firstly, I
began by of course removingthe background using the quick selection tool to
first select the artist in the image and areas that Iwanted to keep, afterdoing
this, I then went to select – inverse in the top bar of photoshop in order to
reverse the selection so that the background was selected, afterdoing this I
used the background eraser tool and magic wand tool to remove remaining
8. areas that had not been removed whilst usingthe quick selection tool. I then
selected the image and used refine edge to soften the edges.
26th March I have since added in the new main image to my main task front cover. In order
to add it in I opened the main task front cover and went to file – place , placed
in the image and then used the ruler tool to position the image.
27th March I have now completed all of the conventions and appropriate corrections for
my front cover and thus have uploaded it to my Unit G321 Blog page.
29Th March My contents page was more or less complete yet it was lackinga main image.
Havingtaken the contents page main image recently afterthe main image, the
first thingthat needed to be done was to apply edits. In order to cut out the
image I used the previous method (Using the quick selection tool, background
eraser tool and magic wand tool) that I had applied to the main image. With
the background removed from the image I placed in the image using file –
place.
9. 31st March Before completingmy contents page I needed to make certain corrections in
order to make sure that everythingwas correct and appropriate. Firstly I came
to realise that the editorial withinmy contents page was far too small and
looked ratherout of place. In order to fix this and make it look slightly more
professional I decided that the editorial would need to be moved and the text
would need to be made much bigger. Therefore I moved the features box
upwards and extended it outwards by a small amount and then extended it
downwards in order to place the editorial underthe features. Ithen selected
all of the editorial layers and moved them into the boxand then individually
resized them until the text and image were big enough to be easily noticed.
I have now completed my main task contents page as I have made all
appropriate corrections and have now finalised the page. Swell as
completing the contents page my Double page spread for my main task
is also complete and therefore I have now completed all pages for my
main task.
