Identifying the traditional principle of medical ethics of autonomy as a major factor that hinders epidemiological investigation and the understanding of a novel virus, this study adopts an ethical framework, consisting of the axes of ethical devotions (local, national, continental, and global) and ethical reasoning approaches (deontological and teleological), to analyze the approaches of communicating global public health crises like the COVID pandemic. This study explores the dynamics among media, public opinion, and presidents regarding environmental issues in the U.S. over several decades. The study finds reciprocal influences among these groups in shaping the environmental discourse. It finds that presidential agenda influences media agenda, and public agenda influences public attitudes. However, the relationships are complex rather than linear. The study also finds that changes in media and public agendas influence attitudes more than the reverse. This suggests media effects should be analyzed at different levels of impact.My Research

This study, using a survey-experiment with a sample of 149 students randomly drawn from 102 US college campuses, testes the effects of four versions of a message about the new scientific issue of water-energy-food (WEF) nexus at the level of agenda, knowledge (frame), attitude, and behavioral intention. The study finds subjects’ attitude associated with subjects’ frame on one end and behavioral intention on the other end, and identifies some effects across the groups. The unclear position of subjects’ agenda in the hierarchy of responses that processes the nexus messages is also discussed.

Presentation at the PSA's Universities Matter event 26 September 2013 at the LSE
Over half of social science research funding in the UK comes from government departments. However, usage and references to social science research varies across departments, with core social science disciplines like economics, social policy, and psychology being referenced most. National security policymakers in the US were surveyed and found that they saw empirical research methods like case studies and policy analysis as more useful than theoretical approaches. One challenge for social sciences is the lack of organizations that help mediate between researchers and policymakers.
Research Impact in Higher Education
Research impact in higher education is important for three main reasons: 1) to monitor and manage university performance and understand contributions to society, 2) to demonstrate accountability to stakeholders and taxpayers for public funding, and 3) to inform funding decisions by showing socioeconomic value. The UK Research Excellence Framework assesses 20% of funding based on impact case studies describing how research has benefited society or the economy. While impact is difficult to measure due to time lags and other factors, case studies provide qualitative evidence of influence on policy, products, services and public awareness.

This study proposes a revised theoretical framework that consists of the axes of ethical devotions (visibly at the personal, institutional, local, national, regional, and global levels) and ethical reasoning approaches (teleology and deontology), to analyze journalists’ ethical stance of collecting and editing news. Values serving as the foundation of the deontological reasoning approach are deemed as heuristics evolved from historic teleological calculations. Journalism is defined as truthful informing of current events ethically devoted to a larger community, while activism, in this context, is defined as truthful informing devoted to a smaller one. So a global devotion with a teleological reasoning approach is recommended for journalists in this global age.

This study examined how media use and ethnicity influence social trust among Generation Y. The results showed:
1) Television and social media were not associated with social trust, while radio use was negatively associated and newspaper use was positively associated.
2) The positive associations between newspaper/social media and social trust disappeared when accounting for ethnic identity and diversity awareness.
3) Ethnic identity and diversity awareness were positively associated with social trust, and ethnic identity mediated the relationships between newspaper/social media and social trust.

Research in the Social Sciences
Social science, including academic subjects such as criminal justice and homeland security, focuses on studying human interaction between individuals, groups, or societies. Social science is about questioning the world around you by examining cultures, societies, economies, politics, behaviors, and any assortment of social interaction. This range in scope is emphasized by a number of academic disciplines such as anthropology, political science, and sociology. Researchers within social science fields consider how individual or group actions impact their society.
Compare, for a moment, social sciences to the physical sciences such as physics or biology. In studying physics, one can grasp how an aircraft can stay in the air. A physicist recognizes the physical forces that impact the aircraft’s flight and can predict what impact these elements will have on the aircraft's continued operation. In understanding the science behind flight, physicists can also estimate or predict what conditions will negatively impact a journey. The aircraft’s design, improvements, and success are all founded on proven mathematical principles. There are also mechanical principles that determine how it must be maintained, fueled, and operated. There are engineering designs with elements that can be measured, tested, and proven reliable. With the knowledge and information these hard sciences provide, practitioners and researchers alike can make better predictions about what designs, models, or activities will be successful.
Meanwhile, society has no rules to explain why things may or may not happen. All who are a part of a society represent living, dynamic organisms. There is form and function in a society to a degree, yet the whole can theoretically be impacted by any single element. Societies and social relationships maintain customs, accepted norms, traditions, economic exchanges, and communications within various social constructs. Social sciences examine countless activities occurring in an ever-changing environment.
By extension, factors that impact an individual’s response to phenomena may be infinite. For example, in studying homeland security, you might consider the elements of prevention, preparation, mitigation, and response in regard to natural disasters. Researchers consider why individuals choose not to evacuate in advance of a known and deadly hurricane. In asking people about their reasons, researchers select individuals who refused to evacuate before a hurricane arrived. In doing so, they might find that there are dozens of possible answers or combinations of answers. Potential answers such as the following are among the answers a survey might reveal:
· Having no transportation
· Fearing their homes will be looted
· Believing the storm’s intensity was exaggerated
· Not comprehending what a hurricane can potentially do to them

What are the strengths and weakness of the scientific and the critical cultural approach to media studies? Which one is most desirable for studying the media? Explain why. What key concepts and terms help you understand the media better?

As I see it, Mass media uses, almost instinctly, the scientific approach. But, " cultural behaviour and mass media are unique in themselves because they influence each other. (2020)" The scientific approach seems to be more desirable for studying the media. The simple answer is because of the more wide usage of the approach. To be fair, before I began any research, I expected the critical cultural approach to be my preferred method. Whenever I think of anything that uses the a scientific approach, I think about creating a hypothesis, doing the research (or experiment) and drawing a conclusion based on the findings of the research or experimentation. But, for this question, this isn't quite the case. The fact that mass media relies on scientific approach is significant. Advertising, for me, is the biggest use as they use scientific approach to survey their audiences. Using something, such as demographics, to target advertising shows scientific method use over critical cultural approach. Examples such as this are used through the use of Nielson ratings, targeted advertising, and other ventures where mass media is utilized. The scientific approach in advertising, TV, movies, and other uses of mass media help ensure the targeted audience is receiving the communication stardards it expects, or in some cases, the entertainment is desires.

The scientific and critical cultural approach of media studies involves the way we can use the approach of the many aspects of the world around us. We sometimes might not even learn things directly from the different sources of media; however, we can learn from other people’s ideas that they get from the media. Cultural approaches are a way that others use media to mainly get them through the structure of everyday life living. “Cultural studies are less concerned with the long-term consequences of media for social order and more concerned with looking how media affect individual lives” (Naveed, 2019). There are many strengths and weaknesses, such as the Media is politically based, action-oriented. Media uses theory to research and change in the real world. The weakness is Media is too political; the call to action is too subjective, typically lacks scientific verification; based on subjective observation. Whenever it is subjected to scientific verification, often employs innovative but controversial research methods.

Research in the Social Sciences
Social science, including academic subjects such as criminal justice and homeland security, focuses on studying human interaction between individuals, groups, or societies. Social science is about questioning the world around you by examining cultures, societies, economies, politics, behaviors, and any assortment of social interaction. This range in scope is emphasized by a number of academic disciplines such as anthropology, political science, and sociology. Researchers within social science fields consider how individual or group actions impact their society.
Compare, for a moment, social sciences to the physical sciences such as physics or biology. In studying physics, one can grasp how an aircraft can stay in the air. A physicist recognizes the physical forces that impact the aircraft’s flight and can predict what impact these elements will have on the aircraft's continued operation. In understanding the science behind flight, physicists can also estimate or predict what conditions will negatively impact a journey. The aircraft’s design, improvements, and success are all founded on proven mathematical principles. There are also mechanical principles that determine how it must be maintained, fueled, and operated. There are engineering designs with elements that can be measured, tested, and proven reliable. With the knowledge and information these hard sciences provide, practitioners and researchers alike can make better predictions about what designs, models, or activities will be successful.
Meanwhile, society has no rules to explain why things may or may not happen. All who are a part of a society represent living, dynamic organisms. There is form and function in a society to a degree, yet the whole can theoretically be impacted by any single element. Societies and social relationships maintain customs, accepted norms, traditions, economic exchanges, and communications within various social constructs. Social sciences examine countless activities occurring in an ever-changing environment.
By extension, factors that impact an individual’s response to phenomena may be infinite. For example, in studying homeland security, you might consider the elements of prevention, preparation, mitigation, and response in regard to natural disasters. Researchers consider why individuals choose not to evacuate in advance of a known and deadly hurricane. In asking people about their reasons, researchers select individuals who refused to evacuate before a hurricane arrived. In doing so, they might find that there are dozens of possible answers or combinations of answers. Potential answers such as the following are among the answers a survey might reveal:
· Having no transportation
· Fearing their homes will be looted
· Believing the storm’s intensity was exaggerated
· Not comprehending what a hurricane can potentially do to them

What are the strengths and weakness of the scientific and the critical cultural approach to media studies? Which one is most desirable for studying the media? Explain why. What key concepts and terms help you understand the media better?

As I see it, Mass media uses, almost instinctly, the scientific approach. But, " cultural behaviour and mass media are unique in themselves because they influence each other. (2020)" The scientific approach seems to be more desirable for studying the media. The simple answer is because of the more wide usage of the approach. To be fair, before I began any research, I expected the critical cultural approach to be my preferred method. Whenever I think of anything that uses the a scientific approach, I think about creating a hypothesis, doing the research (or experiment) and drawing a conclusion based on the findings of the research or experimentation. But, for this question, this isn't quite the case. The fact that mass media relies on scientific approach is significant. Advertising, for me, is the biggest use as they use scientific approach to survey their audiences. Using something, such as demographics, to target advertising shows scientific method use over critical cultural approach. Examples such as this are used through the use of Nielson ratings, targeted advertising, and other ventures where mass media is utilized. The scientific approach in advertising, TV, movies, and other uses of mass media help ensure the targeted audience is receiving the communication stardards it expects, or in some cases, the entertainment is desires.

The scientific and critical cultural approach of media studies involves the way we can use the approach of the many aspects of the world around us. We sometimes might not even learn things directly from the different sources of media; however, we can learn from other people’s ideas that they get from the media. Cultural approaches are a way that others use media to mainly get them through the structure of everyday life living. “Cultural studies are less concerned with the long-term consequences of media for social order and more concerned with looking how media affect individual lives” (Naveed, 2019). There are many strengths and weaknesses, such as the Media is politically based, action-oriented. Media uses theory to research and change in the real world. The weakness is Media is too political; the call to action is too subjective, typically lacks scientific verification; based on subjective observation. Whenever it is subjected to scientific verification, often employs innovative but controversial research methods.

In this week's reflection report I will discuss technology diffusion, S-Curves and innovation
decision process. I will use the healthcare industry as an example. Our healthcare system is ever
evolving - new technologies, insurance models, and information systems are shaping the system
on a daily basis. Despites these changes and the huge healthcare expenditures (16 of GDP in
America compared to 8 in United Kingdom), Americans are comparatively not any healthier
than citizens in most other developed nations (Merson, Black, & Mills, 2012). The disconnect
between investments in technology and health outcomes is a concern of us all. It makes as
question technology diffusion within the healthcare system: are investments in health system
being spent efficiently? Are consumers really resistant to changes that benefit their health? Or
are there issues with technology diffusion as a practice.
Diffusion is the process by which an innovation is spread through a population. Ironically,
people and institutions, generally, do not like change. Change is viewed as painful, difficult and
times creating uncertainties. Because of this, and for the healthcare industry, huge amounts of
resources are devoted either to promoting innovations (for example, selling the latest drug,
imaging system, medical device etc.) or to preventing innovations from disrupting the status quo.
Although many successful healthcare innovations are aimed at making people healthier, at
relatively smaller increases in costs, IT usage in healthcare has always lagged other industries -
ERH are a good example. Adoption of ERH was slow. Literature on technology diffusion states
that successful implementation is influenced by the compatibility and complexity of the
innovation, organizational context, and the characteristics of the implementation strategy (Cain
M, & Mittman, 2002; Rogers, 1995). People respond to these factors differently resulting in an
S-shaped curve illustration of the adoption process.
The S-curve model shows that any innovation is first adopted by a few people/organizations and
as more use it, and confidence is built around the technology, other will begin to use it. Because
of the inherent uncertainty to new innovations, the decision to adopt an innovation takes time.
However, "once the diffusion reaches a level of critical mass, it proceeds rapidly. Eventually a
point is reached where the population is less likely to adopt the innovation, and spread slows
down. The S-curve implies a hierarchy of adopters, starting with innovators, early adopters, early
majority, late majority and laggards (Rogers, 1995). In other words the S-curve explains the
innovation-decision process: the process through which an individual/organization passes
through from when they gain knowledge of an innovation, to forming an attitude, to the decision
to accept or reject the innovation, .
Public Engagement with Research - Music

This movement offers great opportunities for science communicators, by opening up new avenues for communicating work and providing a wide range of high quality content at no cost.
This session will look at the practicalities of open licensing of science communication materials, for content producers (academics, press officers), custodians (museums, libraries, archives) and users (science shows, blogs and publications).
The session will give some case studies of good practice in this field, but the majority of the hour will be given over to practical exercises covering how, why and when to use open licences. This will be followed by a group discussion in which session participants and the panellists can share experiences and ask questions about the issues raised.

Based on this event, we have created a toolkit giving tips on how to use the findings from the PAS 2014 survey to start debates about better engagement with science. Novel approaches to engagement activities that use narrative and immersive environments to create cohesive experiences.
In this session we will share our insights, experiences and learning from some of the unique festival experiences created in 2013 by the Contemporary Science team at the Science Museum. These festivals ranged from narrative driven games to researchers embedded in immersive environments all creating cohesive and memorable experiences. Specific engagement examples will highlight collaborations with research groups, theatre companies and artists. This session is relevant to any organisation, centre or individual looking to engage their audiences through interactive, immersive and theatrical experiences.

As the population is increasing and will reach about 9 billion upto 2050. Also due to climate change, it is difficult to meet the food requirement of such a large population. Facing the challenges presented by resource shortages, climate
change, and increasing global population, crop yield and quality need to be improved in a sustainable way over the coming decades. Genetic improvement by breeding is the best way to increase crop productivity. With the rapid progression of functional
genomics, an increasing number of crop genomes have been sequenced and dozens of genes influencing key agronomic traits have been identified. However, current genome sequence information has not been adequately exploited for understanding
the complex characteristics of multiple gene, owing to a lack of crop phenotypic data. Efficient, automatic, and accurate technologies and platforms that can capture phenotypic data that can
be linked to genomics information for crop improvement at all growth stages have become as important as genotyping. Thus,
high-throughput phenotyping has become the major bottleneck restricting crop breeding. Plant phenomics has been defined as the high-throughput, accurate acquisition and analysis of multi-dimensional phenotypes
during crop growing stages at the organism level, including the cell, tissue, organ, individual plant, plot, and field levels. With the rapid development of novel sensors, imaging technology,
and analysis methods, numerous infrastructure platforms have been developed for phenotyping.

The debris of the ‘last major merger’ is dynamically young
The Milky Way’s (MW) inner stellar halo contains an [Fe/H]-rich component with highly eccentric orbits, often referred to as the
‘last major merger.’ Hypotheses for the origin of this component include Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), where the progenitor
collided with the MW proto-disc 8–11 Gyr ago, and the Virgo Radial Merger (VRM), where the progenitor collided with the
MW disc within the last 3 Gyr. These two scenarios make different predictions about observable structure in local phase space,
because the morphology of debris depends on how long it has had to phase mix. The recently identified phase-space folds in Gaia
DR3 have positive caustic velocities, making them fundamentally different than the phase-mixed chevrons found in simulations
at late times. Roughly 20 per cent of the stars in the prograde local stellar halo are associated with the observed caustics. Based
on a simple phase-mixing model, the observed number of caustics are consistent with a merger that occurred 1–2 Gyr ago.
We also compare the observed phase-space distribution to FIRE-2 Latte simulations of GSE-like mergers, using a quantitative
measurement of phase mixing (2D causticality). The observed local phase-space distribution best matches the simulated data
1–2 Gyr after collision, and certainly not later than 3 Gyr. This is further evidence that the progenitor of the ‘last major merger’
did not collide with the MW proto-disc at early times, as is thought for the GSE, but instead collided with the MW disc within
the last few Gyr, consistent with the body of work surrounding the VRM.

Deep Software Variability and Frictionless Reproducibility

The ability to recreate computational results with minimal effort and actionable metrics provides a solid foundation for scientific research and software development. When people can replicate an analysis at the touch of a button using open-source software, open data, and methods to assess and compare proposals, it significantly eases verification of results, engagement with a diverse range of contributors, and progress. However, we have yet to fully achieve this; there are still many sociotechnical frictions.
Inspired by David Donoho's vision, this talk aims to revisit the three crucial pillars of frictionless reproducibility (data sharing, code sharing, and competitive challenges) with the perspective of deep software variability.
Our observation is that multiple layers — hardware, operating systems, third-party libraries, software versions, input data, compile-time options, and parameters — are subject to variability that exacerbates frictions but is also essential for achieving robust, generalizable results and fostering innovation. I will first review the literature, providing evidence of how the complex variability interactions across these layers affect qualitative and quantitative software properties, thereby complicating the reproduction and replication of scientific studies in various fields.
I will then present some software engineering and AI techniques that can support the strategic exploration of variability spaces. These include the use of abstractions and models (e.g., feature models), sampling strategies (e.g., uniform, random), cost-effective measurements (e.g., incremental build of software configurations), and dimensionality reduction methods (e.g., transfer learning, feature selection, software debloating).
I will finally argue that deep variability is both the problem and solution of frictionless reproducibility, calling the software science community to develop new methods and tools to manage variability and foster reproducibility in software systems.
