Kay Yeoman aimed to make a mobile family science laboratory sustainable by developing an educational product from an existing activity. After researching potential biotechnology education companies, she entered negotiations with Edvotek, which resulted in the development and licensing of the product with support from the Wellcome Trust and the UEA’s research office. The experience was enhanced by a social entrepreneurship course that bolstered her confidence in pursuing the project.

Why did I want to do this?

3. • I had an activity, ‘Become a DNA Detective and Break the Code’
which had potential to be developed into an educational product.
• I investigated potential biotechnology education companies who
might be interested and looked at their product ranges.

4. • One company, Edvotek, seemed suitable. They offered a range
of both dry and wet laboratory activities for schools.
• I made an initial contact with the company
• With the aid of UEA’s Research and Enterprise Office, we
entered into negotiation with Edvotek.

5. • I developed the product further;
• wrote the accompanying educational material
• costed the product per unit
• obtained permission from our funders The Wellcome Trust
