Scary numbers refer to research data and figures that are used to frighten people by presenting big estimates of social problems, troubling trends, or apocalyptic scenarios. However, these scary numbers cannot be fully trusted. Big estimates are not always accurate, troubling trends often forget to maintain comparable measurements and depend on assumptions rather than facts, and apocalyptic scenarios fail to consider comparable costs and benefits. Advocates will use scary numbers to bring attention to their cause, but the numbers are not intended to be especially accurate portrayals of social issues.
