Lights! Camera! Interaction! What Designers Can Learn From FilmmakersAdam Connor
I began college as a film student. I’ve always loved storytelling, particularly visual storytelling in the forms of film and animation. Well-made films show us that they can drive engagement, communicate in subtle ways, change attitudes, and inspire us to try to change our lives.
Films succeed in evoking responses and engaging audiences only with a combination of well-written narrative and effective storytelling technique. It’s the filmmaker’s job to put this together. To do so they’ve developed processes, tools and techniques that allow them to focus attention, emphasize information, foreshadow and produce the many elements that together comprise a well-told story.
We’re responsible for creating products that aren’t just easy to use, but that people appreciate using. It stands to reason that the methods used in films to communicate with and engage audiences can serve as inspiration for designers.
With this presentation, we'’ll revisit the topic of using stories in design and expand on the technical aspects used in film to communicate. We’ll look at some tools used in film such as: cinematic patterns, beat sheets, and storyboards. We’ll consider why they’re used and how we might look to them for inspiration.

Mind Melds and BattleBots: Creating the Right Kind of Designer/Developer DynamicWebVisions
Improving the designer/developer relationship is an ardent wish on a lot of project teams. And yet, a lot of excuses seem to be made for bad relationships between designers and developers… several of which are tied to when and how each are involved.
Do these sound familiar?
“There’s not enough budget to involve all members of the team from beginning to end.”
“We don’t want to limit designer creativity too soon by bringing tech into the process.”
“We don’t want to waste developer time at the beginning when there’s nothing fully defined yet.”
“If we design a detailed enough style guide, development should be able to implement without retaining a designer through implementation.”
How do you find the right balance of involvement without breaking the budget - and make the most of the skills that each team member can bring to the table?
In this presentation, Carolyn Chandler (Experience Designer and instructor) and Don Bora (Developer and iconic tech mentor) will take you on a journey through the main stages of a project from both sides of the divide.

"The 5 Personas of Product Management (and How to Hire for Them)" by Jason ShenProductized
Product managers are one of the toughest roles to define and hire for, in part because depending on the company and the project, they perform a wide variety of activities. It can be helpful to think of the role as five characters — the Explorer, the Analyst, the Planner, the Advocate, and the Sherpa.
This PRODUCTIZED talk by Jason covers:
1) What each of the five characters does and why it is important
2) Examples of that character in action
3) Specific techniques to identify candidates who could embody this character
4) How these five characters can help your organization better work with product managers

My talk from the 2014 Velocity New York Conference on the overlap between DevOps and UX and how each discipline can learn from each other (and also team up to advance the state of the enterprise)
What are the best ways to create creative superteams? These are teams that are able to effectively communicate and collaborate to create even better solutions to huge challenges. In this talk presented at HOW Design Live 2014, I shared different tools that I use as part of how I lead project teams to build trust, create shared norms, and encourage dialogue in the service of creating more powerful design work.
Has “DevOps” jumped the shark?
Some say yes; others say 2014 will be the year DevOps dons its Fonz-esque leather jacket. Whichever you believe, the marketing feeding frenzy has begun and the dilution of the “DevOps” concept to include everything (and simultaneously mean nothing) is palpable.
This talk deconstructs the meta-elements of DevOps that made it resonate so strongly with so many and allowed those familiar DevOps poster children—Netflix, Etsy, and others—to deploy the methodology with such success in their businesses. We’ll go beyond DevOps’ classical CAMS (culture, automation, metrics, and sharing) definition to discover what exactly what made DevOps relevant, and what about it is so timeless and foundational that it will make whatever-follows-DevOps relevant, too.
Design thinking helps to capture audience insights, feedback, aspirations, pain points, wants, and needs. Learn how you can incorporate design thinking into all you do.
Every team is a living environment.
The purpose of a team lives and evolves in the interactions among individual 's experiences of being "in the team".
But what can we designers do about designing such an experience?
How can a team be designed, and how its way of work should be designed in order to match the team's purpose with the company goals and the willingness of the people who are part of it? What about the life cycle of the experience of being a digital team and the way we could measure its effectiveness? How may the team results will be impactful on the growth of individuals, as well as the business?
Taming Complexity and Sparking Innovation Through Ideation and Design ThinkingBayCHI
Gayle Curtis, Design Consultant at BayCHI, December 8, 2009: A design thinking approach to product development gives us a place to start and a way to proceed with problems that are tricky and ill-defined. It can help tame their complexity and uncover innovative solutions. At the heart of this approach is ideation, the capacity for generating ideas and entertaining alternatives, which we most often practice in brainstorming sessions. In this talk we will look at the background, values and techniques of brainstorming and how to structure effective brainstorm sessions. We will also look at the ways group brainstorms can enhance team performance and serve as the sparkplug for an innovation pipeline.
Ideas and practices for regularly gathering sources of inspiration, eliminating blocks to more easily access creative states, prolong them, and leverage their power to develop and execute great work.
Designers might think of themselves as makers, researchers, or facilitators (amongst many other things). Beyond the mode of work, the thing that designers are good at is moving between things – and translating understandings between contexts.
If we think of designers as translators, we then have a better way of thinking through the choices designers have to make around their work.
Talk at Interaction 15, San Francisco, reflecting on what's next. A full transcription of the talk can be found here: https://medium.com/todays-office/a-year-of-reflection-820d228d999c
One of the biggest challenges in the data age is overcoming the problematic belief that data has all the answers. The truth is – data is a resource, not a solution. In order to extract valuable and actionable insights, it is necessary to ask and re-ask certain questions. This talk is about figuring out what these questions are and exposes some of the limitations of common, and seemingly intuitive, approaches to data problems. As an alternative, I introduce the concept of using human-centered design principles and an iterative process to approach what you do with Big (and small) Data. As exemplars, I will walk-through a quick informal example and a real Datascope client project to highlight the flexibility and speed of these techniques.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
Fonts play a crucial role in both User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) design. They affect readability, accessibility, aesthetics, and overall user perception.
