Tigers are powerful solitary creatures that are now endangered mainly due to human activity. There were once nine subspecies of tigers, but now only six remain as three have gone extinct. The main threats tigers face are loss of habitat due to deforestation and poaching for fur and body parts. While conservation efforts are underway, the wild tiger population in India is estimated to be as low as 800-900 individuals, dangerously close to extinction. Educating locals, discouraging poaching, supporting conservation programs, and creating awareness can all help protect these majestic animals.
