This document discusses establishing global student dialogue through an organization called F2F. It outlines that students today live in a connected world through social media and teachers should guide students' online interactions to promote understanding between cultures. The F2F program arranges video conferences between students from different countries to discuss topics that teach cultural understanding and respect. Ukrainian teachers can register their schools with F2F to participate, with technical support provided for video conferences. Suggested discussion topics focus on students' personal experiences with issues in their families and societies. The goals are to help students develop communication skills for interacting with people from other backgrounds.

During this session, the panelists will offer their unique perspectives on the obstacles and mediation necessary to develop a culturally responsive teacher education program abroad that positively impacts U.S. teacher candidates as well as Italian teachers and their primary students. Using examples from their experience developing a teacher education program with EFL teaching field experience, the panelists will lead participants in discussions focused on addressing the curriculum needs of students and U.S. institutions, the community needs of the host culture, and the strategies necessary to work effectively with the host. Dialogue with participants will be framed around approaches for curriculum alignment and for developing and maintaining mutually beneficial community partnerships.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Interconnected World Students
Live in Today
S Students today live in a very connected and globalized world
S Dialogue between students is already taking place through
various social networks such as
S Facebook
S Twitter
S Google Plus
S Vkontakte
S Students communicate not only with their friends but also can
meet people online who may be of different age than they are,
how may live in a different country and culture
3. Goal of Global Dialogue
S We, as teachers, need to direct and channel this dialogue
among young people into the right direction
S Teachers can help students from different places in the world to
connect and communicate not just on random topics but on
topics that will help students to
S understand each other better,
S become more tolerant of differences in each other, and
S accept different opinions and religions that exist in the world
S We need to teach students how to conduct global dialogue with
other students that helps them become informed global citizens
4. Goal of Global Dialogue
S Main Goals of Global Student Dialogue:
S Teach students how to communicate, understand and
learn from students in different countries with different
cultural and religious backgrounds
S Teach students how to live in today’s very connected
and integrated world
S Help students shape the world to be a peaceful place
by teaching them to respect each other and each
other’s values
5. How can we achieve this goal?
S Can use F2F program supported by the Tony Blair foundation
S The goal of F2F program is to establish dialogue between young
people in different countries
S The goal F2F includes helping Ukrainian students to establish
dialogue with students from countries in Europe, Asia, the U.S.
and Canada
S The main office of F2F is in London but people who work in F2F
live in Australia, India, and the U.S. They provide dialogue for
students without leaving their own country
6. Establishing Global Student
Dialogue
S F2F has managers for each country region, facilitators and
technical supporters who help provide student dialogue by:
S Arranging video conferences between students
S Developing the format and plan of the dialogue for students
S Finding contacts with schools to hold this type of of dialogue
S We, teachers in Ukraine, only need to register in this program if a
school wants to participate
S Only one teacher from a school needs to register to present your
school and be the coordinator between F2F and your school
7. Establishing Global Student
Dialogue
S To be able to have dialogue with students from different countires
we have video conferences with technical support from F2F
S Necessary equipment includes: laptop, external webcamera,
microphone, projector, computer monitor and a classroom where
you hold video conference.
S First step in having a video conference is to do technical testing
to make sure equipment works during video conference.
S Second step is to select a topic to discuss during the
video conference
8. Topics for
Global Dialogue
S Many topics can be chosen for student dialogue during video conferences. They
include:
S Human trafficking, moral values of people in your society, woman – leader
of your society, Equality in your society, human rights, compassion, what
would I change to make my society better?, my school subjects, holidays,
etc.
S Each broad topic is discussed at the level of students’ families. This way
students can really understand how the topic affects them personally and
why it’s important for the society. This approach to topic discussion helps
students develop critical thinking skills
S For example, if we talk about compassion, we first talk about what it
means to be compassionate with our family members and then with our
friends and then as members of our society
S During discussions we also talk about religion we belong to, how our
family thinks about religion and how religion can help us make the world
better.
9. Other ways to have a dialogue
S It is also possible to blog through F2F program
S Usually 4 schools from different countries blog during the
month
S One school writes during the week and the other 3
respond
S Then, schools change roles: a different school
write about a topic and the rest of 4 schools
respond

12. What do people studying
English get from global
dialogue?
S Help our students find friends in different countries and cultures who share
similar values and with whom they can keep in touch and discuss various
topics
S Develop students’ moral values and help them be able to communicate
about these values in English
S Provide students with opportunities to learn about the countries they will
travel to virtually during video conferences
S Students find interesting to search for information about countries and
cultures at home, which in turn, keeps them occupied with a good and
productive task OR
S This preparation can be done in the classroom during English lessons
S Help our students improve communication skills, teach them to etiquette of
having a dialogue with representatives of other cultures, develop students’
