malcolm x Essays
Malcolm X was a very interesting and complicated person. Throughout his life, Malcolm had
exposure to practically every type of person the world had to offer. In his younger years, he excelled
in his community predominately surrounded by whites. He then got into the hustling business
within the black community which supplied for all types of people. After that, he joined the Nation
of Islam, joining himself with many Muslims. Lastly, Malcolmwent on a Hajj to Africa, where his
communication with a diverse group of people expanded. Each time Malcolm had a new group of
people in his life, he had a different alias to go by. Whichever one is remembered most, Malcolm

He then got caught as a burglar and was put in prison. As in many aspects of his life, the book
gave more details of Malcolm s life inside the steel bars. Since no one was in jail with him that
was interviewed in the film, we could not get a good presentation of others views of his
experiences in jail. While in prison, Malcolm hears about the Nation of Islam through his family.
The leader of the group, Elijah Mohammed had a central idea that all white men were devils. In
learning this, Malcolm thought back to all of the white people he had previously encountered. It is
easier for us to understand Malcolm s thought process after reading the book, since the film did not
tell us of all of his relationships with white people. Malcolm then converted to Islam.
Replacing his last name with X did more than just change his name, it changed his personality.
He changed his last named because he did not want to be connected in any way with his old last
name that was given to his ancestors by slave owners. The film really let us know his displeasure
with his old last name. During an interview, Malcolm refused to tell his interviewer his given last
name. I felt as though the movie was very helpful in learning about him as Malcolm X. The book
would tell us about how Malcolm gave powerful speeches and little details about his preaching but
you cannot replace the actual footage of his speeches. On several occasions,

One By Metallica Essay
The lyrics of the song One by Metallica is a song about the mental state of one who is in a war. It
starts off by describing how the narrator can t seem to tell whether or not what he is experiencing
is reality or a nightmare. The lyrics state for God to wake him up from his nightmare. The lyrics
of this song go back and forth from war to being fed with tubes and living on machines
suggesting the narrator is seriously injured and is wanting to die and wake up from the nightmare
he is in. It is common for injuries to occur in warfare and in this case, the narrator is suffering
from extreme pain and living off machines. It also states at the end that a landmine is what took his
arms, legs, speech, hearing, sight, and soul. He begs to die, as... Show more content on

I had the typical signs of hating myself and feeling worthless. It was very hard to continue living
on like everyone else since I was fighting myself internally all day long. I m sure a lot of people
go through some sort of depression in their lives. Luckily, I could say that I didn t have severe
depression like many others suffer from. However, I did struggle every day to stay sane. It was
very hard to stay focused in school and to socialize with friends and family. Eventually, I did get
past my depression. I realized one day how bad my depression had gotten and I started to
become aware that I needed to change. While it may not have worked for a lot of people, I
healed myself. I started to appreciate everything in life that we take for granted. Like waking up
healthy and not having to worry about bombs or landmines like some do in countries like Syria.
I started to understand that I have a better life than a huge chunk of others around the world.
Being able to be born in a country like ours, experiencing the things I have experienced, I started
to tell myself I have no excuse to be sad about anything, I did not have that right when so many
others have so much worse than me. Anyways what I can say about battling my internal war is that
it was a version of Hell that I hope to never have to go through with

The Causes And Impacts Of The International Space Station
The International Space Station commonly known as the (ISS) is a large spacecraft that orbits
around Earth. This space station serves as a home for the crews of astronauts and cosmonauts. The
space station is also a unique science laboratory. Several nations such as Canada, Japan, the Russian
Federation, the United States, and eleven Member States of the European Space Agency(Belgium,
Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the
United Kingdom) worked together to build and use this space station. The space station is made of
parts that were assembled by astronauts, in space itself. NASAis using this space station to learn
more about the living and working conditions in space. These discoveries will help make it
possible for them to find out if it is feasible to send humans farther into space than ever done in the
past.
Political:
The International Space Station was first considered in the waning years of the Cold War. A space
station called Mir was prepared to be launched by the Soviet Union, which went into orbit in 1986.
The United States wanted to match its rival.During his 1984 State of the Union address, President
Ronald Regan announced his plans for a U.S led project. Russia was invited to join the space
station by the United States when they decided to expand their international partnership, after the
collapse of the Soviet Union in 1993. Eugene Skolnikoff, professor emeritus of political science at

Pro-Voice And Abortion Analysis
Baker and De Robertis discusses that pro choice and pro life are not the only voices that can be
chosen, they suggest pro voice, which encourages personal expression. Pro voice recognizes that
multiple meanings inherent in how people talk about their abortion... I m so sad about my
abortion, it does not assume what that means for her (Baker and De Robertis). The authors
create a new voice in order for women to have the liberty to express themselves about their

Literary Devices In Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet Literary Analysis Essay Literary devices are reveal several details about
characters in stories, movies, plays, and other writings. Oxymorons are two opposites placed
right next to each other. A paradox is simply a oxymoron except seperated and placed in a
sentence. Lastly, a juxtaposition is contrasting two objects such as characters, places, and even
their actions. William Shakespeare successfully added all of these literary devices into his
famous play Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare indirectly revealed character traits for Romeo, Juliet,
and Friar Laurence by using all three of these literary devices. Shakespeare used the figurative
language to indirectly describe who Romeo is. Romeo and Mercutio argue with each other about
the importance of dreams (1.4.11 103). During Mercutio s Queen Mab speech, it reveals that
Romeo is a dreamer and Mercutio is not. This is a juxtaposition because Mercutio and Romeo
have two different mindsets on dreams. An example of Shakespeare using a oxymoron to indirectly
describe Romeo is when Romeo states, Feather of lead,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Juliet says, Come, night; come, Romeo, come thou day in night (3.2.17). She waits for Romeo
all day until night not knowing about the fight with Tybalt. As she speaks, this quote reveals that
Juliet is obsessive and passionate. She is explaining that Romeo is her sun and a necessity for
life. It is a paradox because it talks about day in night which are two opposites in a sentence.
Juliet tells the Nurse as she finds out Romeo is apart of the Montagues: My only love sprung
from my only hate (1.5.136). This clarified that she is a risk taker and very rebellious for still
wanting to love Romeo. Also, this is another paradox because her only love came from her only
hate which is two opposites in a sentence. For Friar Laurence, Shakespeare uses paradoxes and
oxymorons to indirectly explain who he

The Movie The Help
The film, The Help was a great movie but it was definitely an eye opener for me because as we
research different eras we find that circumstances for Black women were always at the hands of
someone else. Black women were referred to as Negros in this era and sometimes were called
more derogatory names, that we need not mention. Blacks were not allowed to drink cokes, and
were punished if they were caught drinking it. Unfortunately, Black women were mothers to their
own children and they had to be mothers to the white children that they cared for. Black women
had to leave their children with someone else while they cared for the white children. The
mothers of those children were so busy doing book clubs, town meeting etc. that they didn t have
time to take care of their own children. When the children were in need of attention, most times it
was the maid that coddled the children and make sure that they were taken care of. In the movie
the white children depended on the maid more than their own parents. The parents only picked the
children up once a day to spend time with them or to even talk to them. Even the fathers didn t
have time for the children and only saw them in passing as they were walking out the door. Black
women potty trained the children that they cared for while the mothers carried on with their daily
tasks. Even though Black women were treated unfairly, the white women often looked up to them
and may have even asked for help with their

Desiree s Baby Essay
Gender, Race and Inequality in Desiree s Baby
Desiree s Baby is a tragic short story written by Kate Chopin. The story is about the struggle
between the main characters Armand and his wife Desiree. The relationship is torn apart after
they come to the realization that they have a quadroon baby or quarter black. Neither of them
know that either one could be the cause of the mixed baby. Armand sees this as a curse to his
family name and disowns Desiree and the baby. After Desiree and her baby are disowned by
Armand, Desiree feels she has nothing to live for. She disappears into the bayou where we can
only guess she kills herself. In the end, we learn that when Armand is burning the possessions of
Desiree and the baby he finds a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that a wealthy white couple had a quadroon child would bring disgrace to the family
name. Armand suspects Desiree is the one who is half black, which could very well be true. She
was taken in by her father Monsieur Valmonde when she was found under the shadow of a stone
pillar at the entrance to their home. Madame Valmonde was unable to conceive a child and
viewed this as a blessing from god and they raised her as if she was their own. She grew up to be
beautiful and with a white appearance. Armand fell in love with her and was reminded that she
was nameless. He knew that she could have been the cause of the mixed baby by her unknown
origin. Knowing this, he was very quick to decide she was the cause of the disgrace to his name
and home, and from that point grew cold hearted and shunned them away. During the time this
story was set it would have been unheard of for a powerful white couple who owned a large cotton
plantation to have a mixed baby.
The characters of Desiree and Armand are opposites of each other. Armand cares more for his
name and status than the love of a woman who cares deeply for him. He doesn t see or doesn t
care that his relationship with Desiree goes deeper than the color of his child s skin. He

Our recommendation to San Juan Cell Phones, taking in consideration the risk is to accept the
order from Big Box and buy the 100,000 phones from the OEM Company, which will be able to
meet the deadline, make an identical phone to the Alpha model, and the price will be fourteen
dollars for each unit. This alternative will generate a profit $100,000.00, since cell phones would
be sold at fifteen dollars as shown in Table 1 3. The earning are not going to be substantial but at
the end we are not going to lose the customer; promote our company, attract potential customers,
which will bring even bigger profits to the company without cost control. Also we can expand the
company and at the end is going to generate new employments and the possibility of take the
company to a major chain level. In conclusion San Juan Cell Phones is a company that has the
opportunity to grow and already have products that gave them a good profit, but there is always
some space to improve their products. At this moment if when we use all the different strategies for
the incorporation of new products starting with the cost comparison, identify alternatives that
increment the cost, analyze the different risk, establish recommendation and elaborate a work plan
that benefit the company. It is important to always involve the personnel because they are the heavy

U2 V. Negativland Summary
I think that the court s ruling should be overturned because I don t believe that Negativland
violated the copyright law by sampling from U2.
In the article entitled U2 Negativland the case from our side Negativland believes their work
does not violate copyright law. Negativland asserted, It was used for purposes of fair comment,
parody, and cultural criticism (151). In other words, Negativland s work was intended to make fun

I agree because the artist named Weird Al Yankovic. He uses the instrumentals for a popular

they are parodies. Since Negativland made a parody of U2 s I still haven t found what I m looking

The Ozone Hole And Polar Regions
The Ozone Hole and the Polar Regions The Polar Regions of the Earth have slowly been fading
away in the past two centuries, but with the introduction of a new and growing problem, the ozone
hole, the Polar Regions are more vulnerable than ever before. The depletion of the ozone within the
atmosphere has caused the atmosphereto alter its radiative effects and raise the overall climate of
the Earth. The Earth s ozonelayer has continued to dwindle down in size and it has had profound
effects on its radiative ability. The Earth s undergoes a natural process, known as the greenhouse
effect, which involves greenhouse gasses to absorb heat and radiate it back towards Earth. This
allows Earth to have a temperature that can support life. Due the widening of the ozone hole, the
greenhouse effect has become accelerated. The substances that destroy ozone molecules, including
CFCs, are also very strong greenhouse gasses which intensify the greenhouse effect and cause the
lower troposphere to warm. Furthermore, the depletion of ozone allows ultraviolet rays to easily
pass through the stratosphere and hit Earth, which, in turn, raises the temperature of the lower
atmosphere. This rise in temperature has caused a great deal of implications in the Polar Regions.
The Climate Change and the Polar Regions The Polar Regions are made mostly of ice and are
very susceptible to heat. The accelerated Greenhouse Effect has caused Arctic temperatures to
increase 3В°C in the past 100 years. This

Human Rights And Women s Rights
Introduction:
If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women
s rights and women s rights are human rights once and for all. On September 5, 1995, 180 countries
came together in Beijing China to hear first lady Hillary Clinton s speech about women s rights.
This speech was the United Nations Fourth World Conference of Women. The target audience for
this speech is governments and other organizations that can help meet the goal of making women s
rights human rights. She addressed problems that every single country faced concerning the
liberties of women, and why it was important that they receive these freedoms. The speech was
courageous and considered path breaking too many in its demand for action. The great challenge of
this conference is to give voice to women everywhere whose experiences go unnoticed, whose
words go unheard. Hillary Clinton has become famous for the statement: Women s rights are human
rights. She is known as one of the greatest women of our time, combining intelligence, compassion
and bravery.
Summary:
For Aristotle, the ethos of a speaker is persuasive when the speech demonstrates practical wisdom,
moral virtue, and goodwill toward the audience. (Aristotle s Rhetoric) Clinton makes it clear that
she understands and is an important person covering the topic. Over the past 25 years, I have

Cuban Revolution And The Revolution
Fidel Castro once said I do not fear the fury of the miserable tyrant who took the lives of 70 of my
comrades. Condemn me. It does not matter. History will absolve me. This iconic line triggered one
of the greatest events in Cuba s history, the Cuban revolution. The factors that caused the revolution
and the main events during changed the lives of Cubas people as well as North Americans. Cuba
was a poor, uneducated, country controlled by a brutal dictator in 1953. The attack on the Moncoda
barracks and other confrontations caused the people of Cuba to react storming the presidential
palace and rioting. Castro and his men were starting to win against Batista s despite the numbers.
After the revolution Fidel Castrotook control of Cuba, educating them, renewing their health, and
redistributing wealth. The revolution also affected North America in both negative and positive
ways that contribute to the relationship between these countries today.
Cuba in the 1950s was under absolute power from a ruthless dictator and was in need of an
overthrow in government, also known as a revolution. Fulgencio Batista was the elected president
of Cuba from 1940 to1944 and the dictator from 1952 to 1959. He was a brutal dictator that
controlled everything, the university, the press, the army, and the people. Batista had a secret police
called the bureau for the repression of communist activities. These men did Batista s dirty work for
him, torturing and killing anywhere between 1000

The World Wide Web Is A Better Source For Students...
The world wide web is growing immensely and it is filled with a plethora of information that is
easily accessible to anyone and everyone with an internet capable device. Students today are
constantly glued to technology, whether it is for leisure purposes or school purposes, thus making
them susceptible to reading and gathering accurate as well as false information from the internet.
Many students do not know how to navigate the web effectively or will not check a source s
authority when doing research, and as a result, they gather faulty information. The fact that students
can easily access information on the web when doing research, it is imperative for teachers to teach
students how to properly evaluate websites in order to assure that they are gathering authentic
information from credible sources. There are certain criteria educators and students can use in order
to confirm the authenticity of a website. In this paper, I used ten of Kathy Schrock s criteria to
evaluate two websites to determine which is a better source for students researching information
on the topic The Human Body. The criteria used are underlined and written in bold, and below
each criterion will be a summary of my evaluation of both websites. This paper will conclude
which website is better for the research.

Abstract
Teaching vocabulary is something challenging, especially if it is done to elementary school

effective is that crossword puzzle can make students learn content. Richards and Rodgers state that:
Content Based Instruction refers to an approach to second language teaching in which teaching is
organized around the content or information that students will acquire, rather than around a
linguistic or other type of syllabus. (Richards and Rodgers, 2003: 204)
Therefore, content based instruction emphasizes the information that will be got by students after
they learn something. In content based instruction, language is learned as means to acquire
information. It means that language is learned not only to master or to be able to use it, but also to

Exclusive Breastfeeding And Infant Mortality
Exclusive Breastfeeding and Infant Mortality: If We Nudge, Will Mothers Budge?
Section I: Introduction
West Africa has the highest infant mortality rate in the world for every 1000 live births, 70
children die before their first birthday (Wang, 2014). National infant mortality rates vary from 18.8
deaths per 1000 live births in Cape Verde to 89.9 deaths per 1000 live births in Guinea Bissau.
Nonetheless, the leading causes of infant mortality are largely the same across the region: neonatal
conditions (26 percent), malaria (21 percent), pneumonia (21 percent), diarrhea (17 percent),
measles (6 percent) and HIV/AIDS (4 percent). The desired children hypothesis of fertility asserts
that high fertility primarily reflects desired number of children (Pritchett, 1994). In this regard, high
infant mortality may motivate women to have more children to attain their preferred family size.
Thus aside the important population health implications of reducing high infant mortality rates,
demographic theory predicts that improved child survival is accompanied by declines in fertility
reflecting reduced demand for replacement births to achieve a given target family size. The
influence of reduced infant mortality on fertility decline has also been established empirically in a
wide range of settings (Barnum, 1988). Declines in infant mortality, falls in fertility rates, and lower
average family sizes lead to changes in population age structure and stimulate increased female
labor

Social Conflict In Shantata ! The Court Is In Session
Shantata! Court Chalu Ahe (Silence! The Court is in Session, 1967) was his first play in which
he marked out as a rebel against the established values of the society. This play combines social
criticism with the tragedy of an individual victimized by society. The play represents the mental
conflict of the protagonist, Miss Leela Benare who appears during the mock trial as an accused.
The plot of the play revolves round the trial of Miss Benare. Her role eclipses the roles of her male
counterparts. In love, she is cheated twice; first by her maternal uncle and later by Prof. Damle, her
loving companion. However, in the first event, the guilt passes unnoticed and hence, unpunished.

The Red Candle In Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club
The great battle of books vs movies is never ending. A book provides insight of the characters
feelings while a movie needs to evoke emotions in a shorter time frame. The Joy Luck Club,
written by Amy Tan, was adapted into a film in 1993. Unlike the Harry Potter series Amy Tan
cowrote the screenplay, meaning she had the ultimate decision of what makes it in the movie.
Comparing both was quite interesting knowing that Amy Tan could ve kept The Red Candle story
and kept a clean view of the aunts in the story. The book The Joy Luck Clubwas a novel of
intertwined stories of four women and their daughters. Reading each story was like finding a
puzzle piece that lead to fully understand the characters. One of the important stories used in the
book was The Red Candle. The Red Candle is a the symbol of marriage in China and the marriage

June to explaining that their mother died years ago right after getting off the ship. The change

Comparing The Parthenon Of Ancient Greece And Rome
Last of all, both of these edifices directly affect the responsibilities of the citizens and what makes
the Greek or Roman. With the massive amount of wealth and power gained by the Athenians the
statement of the Parthenon is a sort of claim of superiority over all other nations and enforces a sort
of national pride on Athenian power. It is an example of their efficiency as a fighting machine. The
reliefs serve as metaphors of triumph over the irrational barbarians and order over chaos that
defines the mindset of Athenian society. Similarly, the Ara Pacis is also a statement of dominance
over an irrational society but the Romans sought to further this by claiming they were saviors, not
just conquerors. Even the name of the monument, Arch of

generally in more of a coarse grain. Sage is grown in the United States but is also grown in
Albania and Dalmatia. Sage is a very popular herb in the United States and is used quite frequently
for flavoring such things s sausage, pork, lamb, and other meats, salads, pickles, cheese, and
stuffing. The smell of Sage is very aromatic and distinct.
Sage loves to hang around in the kitchen with Thyme, Rosemary, and Basil. They work very
well together. Sage is normally one of the main herbs in stuffing for poultry but is often added to
lamb and pork dishes as well. Sage is very strong and should be used sparingly as a little goes a

the middle ages it was quite common for people to make a Sage tea and drink it for ailments such

Although there is nothing to solidify these claims it is also said that a chewed Sage leaf applied

The Character Of Roger Chillingworth And Arthur Dimmesdale
The setting is in Boston, Massachusetts, It s cold and a heavy rain is falling down from the sky

Chillingworth are having a private conversation between each other and Hawthorn creates a bit of
tension in this scene by showing the reader how Chillingworth would torture Dimmesdale but still
manage to keep Dimmesdale from knowing he is actually Hester s former husband.
Moreover, Chillingworth does not just torture the minister he also makes sure he is kept in good
health so he may stay alive and prolong his twisted enjoyment. This could be found in paragraph
fourteen it reads But for my aid, his life would have burned away in torments within the first two
years after the perpetration of his crime and thine. In these lines he is boasting how the minister
would have already died without his medical knowledge, as if he were trying to explain that what
he had done hasn t been all bad and his actions should actually be celebrated. This can show the
reader how Chillingworth to some extent was denying his sins trying belittle them.
Furthermore, Chillingworth s mission to torture Dimmesdale soon becomes his way of sustaining
himself and metaphorically keep himself alive,

These shark s colouring enable it to blend with the ocean and to become camouflaged, this helps
the shark to not be seen by prey and allowing it to have a better chance of attacking its prey. The
great white shark also uses its incredibly fast speed to travel through water and catch prey. They
can reach top speeds of 24 km/h and this is due to their body design similarly being shaped like a
torpedo. These sharks also have a caudal fin, having a large top part and small bottom part. The
design of this caudal fin enables the shark to have balance as they swim through water. Another
adaptation that helps it hunt prey is its great sense of smell. The great white shark has a sharp
sense of smell, which enables it to detect small amounts of blood in water from 5 km distances.
This type of shark is also known to have the best electroreception. The electroreceptors and lateral
line canals are found in the head to the snout of the Great white sharks body. These features enable
sharks to detect the movement of other animals nearby in the water using their electromagnetic
field. These sharks have also learned how to maintain body temperature warmer than the
surrounding water. To achieve this they use nerve fibres called ampullae. All of these adaptations

Allusions In Hamlet
Allusions can be found in nearly every work of literature and art due to the influence they have in
creating a universal understanding. Biblical and mythological references are the most common
allusions because they are regarded as primary sources for the basis of human reason. William
Shakespeare alludes to both religionand mythologyin Hamlet in order to emphasize the importance
and failure of religion and to reveal the nature and psychological complexes of characters.
William Shakespeare alludes to the Bible in Hamlet constantly because many of the characters,
including Claudius and Hamlet, are experiencing a personal crisis concerning sin. Claudius prays,
O, my offence is rank it smells to heaven;/ It hath the primal eldest curse upon t,/ A brother s
murder. The reflection made by Claudius to the killing of his brother, an allusionto the biblical
story of Cain and Able, is influential because it captures the importance and failure of religion
present during the play s depicted period of time. Pamela Ronson, a Professor at Yale, states,
[Claudius] asks God for forgiveness, yet knows he does not merit it, since he cannot commit to
penance for his crime. His prayers are empty: while he may repent breaking the sixth
commandment by murdering his brother (a direct reference to Cain Able), he refuses to preform
any penance for it because of his pride (a Deadly sin) (11). Religion proves important to Claudius
because he does decide to reach out in prayer, but religion

was frustrated with the direction the organization was taking. He told the other, Just don t worry
about it. It isn t that important. Keep in mind what appears to be a small issue to you can be a
major issue with another. Acknowledging the frustration and concerns is an important step in
resolving the conflict. Honesty and clear communication play an important role in the resolution
process. Acquaint yourself with what s happening and be open about the problem. Let individuals
express their feelings. Some feelings of anger and/or hurt usually accompany conflict situations.
Before any kind of problem solving can take place, these emotions should be expressed and
acknowledged.
Establish guidelines. Before conducting a formal meeting between individuals, get both parties to
agree to a few meeting guidelines. Ask them to express themselves calmly as unemotionally as
possible. Have them agree to attempt to understand each other s perspective. Tell them if they
violate the guidelines the meeting will come to an end.
Be patient and take your time. Take time to evaluate all information. A too quick decision does
more harm than good when it turns out to be the wrong decision and further alienating the
individual involved.

The Dust Bowl Effect On The Great Depression
The Dust Bowl s Effect on the Great Depression
The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, pays homage to the critical impact the Great Depression
had on dust bowl farmers. The growing demand for wheat products forced farmers to overgraze
their property. This reduced the overall usefulness and biodiversity of the land, and attributed to
the desertification of their establishments. With this, the once lush fields turned to dust, which
blew away with the commencement of the severe drought in the early 1930s. Steinbeck utilizes
the lives of the Joad family to depict how farmers were often forced to flee their homes in search
of better jobs during this time period. Because of the stock market s demise, no one was purchasing
their crops. Banks were required to drive farmers out of their homes, as they could not afford to
keep supporting them without profit. The agricultural devastation of the Dust Bowl intensified the
economical impact of the Great Depression and added to the misery of the migrant workers. The
wrath of nature unleashed itself on the migrant farmers during the 1930s. During this time period,
the entirety of the Midwest was plagued with drought. In fact, new scientific studies found that the
drought of the 1930s was the worst in North America in the last 300 years (The National Drought
Mitigation Center). The Earth s surface became a thin hard crust (Steinbeck 1). The Great Plains
were noted for their fertile soils until this ten year dry spell cursed the

Those are the question raised in Brett Gaylor s documentary RiP: A Remix Manifesto, raises alarms

The documentary highlights the popular music artist known as Girl Talk. Girl Talk consists of
one man named Gregg Gillis and he takes parts from different songs (usually popular ones) and
creates new music of his own. He doesn t use any of his own materials at all. A lot of people
consider his work stealing and what is known as Copyright infringement; even though he changes
the music so much, you can t even tell what all of the songs he uses are. Girl Talk is known as a
mash up artist, and according to the documentary, mash up artists have stirred up quite a
controversy with both the Copyright Company and the other artists they take their material from.
Copyright problems arose with the advent of the free availability of information on the Internet. It
was easy for people to steal music, movies and images from the internet and use them to create their
own mash up piece. Prior to the internet copyrighting actually encouraged creativity. Once music
sharing websites like Napster began, musicians and other artists began suing and copyright laws
became more rigouous in their scope and enforcement.

What Would Jesus Do
What would Jesus do in regards to the social justice issue of immigration? Would he give
immigrants a fair and unbiased opportunity in a new country, or would he turn his back towards
these hopeful people? The Catholic Church teaches us that Jesus would support immigrants, live by
the Catholic Social Justice Themes and the Christian Feminist model of Justice, and give these
people a fighting chance in a new country. These ideologies represent hope, a more promising future
for immigration, and a change in how we see one another.
The two Catholic Social Justice themes that relate best to the issue of immigration are the themes of
global solidarity and rights and responsibilities.
Global solidarity is an important aspect of social life because it teaches us that people are an
interdependent race and that we all fit together into a larger and more unified community. We are all
one people, despite our many racial, economic, national, ideological, and religious differences. The
Catholic Social Teachingof global solidarity tells us that we are all brothers and sisters and that
we must take it upon ourselves to care for one another. We as humans are inherently social beings,
so it is biologically important for us to live together in communion. We find the most success and
are the most happy when we come together and exist as one, proving how important it is for
immigrants to live amongst us as one nation. It is crucial that our country welcome immigrants into

Analysis Of The Use Of Lighting In The Godfather Essay
I am writing about the use of lighting in the opening scene of The Godfather, (1). The
photography of The Godfather as an entire film is very planned and used specifically to
generate moods, and have great psychological affect. This is just as true for the very first series of
shots for the film, and perhaps more important since these first shots will give the audience the
initial feeling of the film, and set a tone for the picture. The first shot is highly dramatic in its
lighting method, and the audience is drawn in immediately to one single detail. A man begins
revealing the details of a tragic incident that befell his daughter. We don t see who he is talking to.

This highlight area of his eye is the part of the frame which has the greatest contrast, so naturally
the audience is drawn directly into this man s stare, and this is also achieved by having the man
look right at the camera. As he speaks, the camera slowly pulls out and then we start to see a
slight increase in the surrounding detail of the scene. We can now see part of the back and side
of the Godfather, (Marlon Brando) but still we have only a slight highlight on his side, and no
detail. Now the man gets up and moves to Brando s side, and he too is in complete shadow; we
can only really make out the fact that there are two figures present here, no more. Then the shot
changes as the man leaves the Godfather s side, and it is a revealing frontal MCU of Brando.
This shot is lit much more than the previous shot. Where the other shot s background was pitch
black, this shot is lit so that almost the whole space and all objects in it are visible. Brando has a
key, fill and backlight on him, and his character is revealed with much intensity because of the
dramatic light change from shot to shot. When the shot comes back to the man, in an over the
shoulder (Brando) style, again the backround is totally black. Having the man in that particular
lighting, and having Brando lit the way he is serves two psychological purposes. First, having the
constant black background behind the man isolates his problem and makes us aware of how
consumed he is with his problem.

Picky Eater By Julia Alvarez
At some point of a kid s life, they want to be picky about something. They want to have some
control of their little world where adults are constantly telling them what to wear, what to do,
and what to eat. Food, for instance, is an easy topic where kids will fight for some independence.
Throwing, yelling, crying and even bribing were the essence of a battle at dinner tables. Because
some parents would automatically give in to their children s need, the kids often think they won
the battle but technically they didn t. In the story, Picky Eater , Julia Alvarez tells a story of her
childhood experience of home meals where her and her sisters were also picky eaters, despite
having healthy foodserved to them. Meals, she said, at home were battlegrounds. Even if you won
the dinner battle, refusing to clean your plate or drink your engrudo, you inevitably lost the war
(Alvarez 145). Battlegrounds at home can occur but it doesn t have to end up being messy if the
parents know how to handle the situation properly. In Picky Eater Alvarez mentioned that her
parents particularly her motherwas very strict on the type of food the children ate. Getting food
from en la calle was strictly forbidden (Alvarez 144) because they might get sick catching some

The Management Programs Of A Computer
Introduction
Operating systems, ( OS ) are the management programs of a computer. First it is booted into the
computer by a boot program, and then it manages all other programs on the computer. These other
programs are called applications, and they utilize an operating system by making requests for
process service power through an API, or application program interface. Users then interact directly
with an operating system through a graphical user interface or command language.
History The earliest computers lacked any form of operating system because they were simple
mainframes. The machines were primitive and programs were often entered into the system one bit
at a time, through many mechanical switches and plug boards. There were no operating systems
during the first phase of computer history from 1940 1955. By the 1950s, punch cards were
introduced and made it so switches were not as necessary any more. The IBM 701, from General
Motors Research Laboratories, was the first system that implemented an operating system. The
systems generally ran one job at a time, which was indicated by whatever was on the punch card.
This is called single stream batch processing. Computers were just exotic experimental equipment,
and mainly tested theory. The use plugboards would direct the computer. Without operating
systems, there is no overlap between computation, I/O, think time, and response time. The specific
goal was to handle tables of numbers. Libraries

Basketball Injury
A male basketball player came into the clinic complaining of back pain that sometimes travels
down his leg. This athlete has a long history( 3+ years) of back pain and often uses advil to get
through practice and games. The pain often starts as pinching in the lumbar spine and as it gets
worse, becomes a tight shooting pain into the left leg. The pain is often described as tightness or
pulling with no numbness or tingling. He often has difficulty bending over to pick something up
or tying his shoes while standing. This athlete has no previous injuries besides multiple inversion
ankle sprains and has never observed any SHARDD on his back or down the back of his leg. Upon
observation, sway back and excessive kyphosis of the thoracic spine was noted,... Show more

However, even when the right leg was lifted, the pain was reproduced in the left. He was also
only able to lift his legs approximately 40 degrees off the table. I then tried to explain the slump
test to the athlete. For directions, I explained that you want to be sitting and have bad posture. With
his femur in a dangling position, dorsiflexion and his knee at 60 degrees flexion caused a
reproduction of symptoms. This was exasperated when the athlete attempted to lift his legs at all
or put his head down. From here we checked piriformis using two different tests/checks. First, we
had him prone, knees bent and together. He was instructed to let his feet fall out. His left leg was
close to vertical whereas the right was 30 degrees from 90. I felt comfortable with all of these
special tests as they did not involve therapist hand positioning, just clear instructions. After
explaining the slump test, I thought it would be beneficial to also demonstrate it since the cue of
have bad posture did not seem to work initially. From this experience I have become more cognizant
of how I provide instructions. Although my intention is not to insult the athlete, I need to

Analysis Of The Odd Couple
Overall, the female and male versions of the tragicomedy show, The Odd Couple , had many
similarities and had had the same basic story lines. The main character, Felix and Florence, each
were going through a divorce. They each move in with their friend, Oscar and Olive, because
they have also recently went through a divorce and feel lonely living in such a huge place alone.
The friends of both Felix and Florence are concerned that they would kill themselves at the
beginning of the show; they both swallowed a bottle of green pills, but ended up getting them
out of their system before it did any harm to them. Felix and Florence end up being extremely
emotional clean freaks while Oscar and Olive are more chill and sloppy, these differences
caused confrontations with them living together. They try to ease the tension by going on dates
with Eventually it becomes too much and Oscar and Olive kick Felix and foreigners that live in
the same building as them. During their date , both Felix and Florence tell their dates about the
problems and they end up crying together over their past spouses. Florence out, where there run
away to the foreign couple that they meet earlier in the show. The Show ends the same way it
begins, with the guys at their guys night and the girls at their girls night. Although the overall
story was the same for both shows, where were some major differences as well as some minor
ones that I noticed while watching them. One of the major ones was that the guys were playing
poker while the girls with playing trivial pursuit. This caused for a large chuck of earlier scenes
to have some differences that pertained to the different games that were being played. Oscar
and Olive both were low on money, especially in the beginning, but for different reasons. Oscar
gambled away a lot of his money, and Olive sent large amounts of money to her ex husband. The
lengths of the marriages were different too, Felix s marriage had lasted for 12 years, where
Florence s marriage lasted for 14 years. When Felix finally broke the glass mug out of frustration,
it broke lightly, in a few large pieces that all stayed on the stage. When Florence broke he mug, it
shattered into many tinier pieces and even splashed up

Postmodernism Or The Cultural Logic Of Late Capitalism...
Fredric Jameson is admired as a standout amongst the most imperative and persuasive artistic and
social pundit and theoretician in the Marxist convention of the English speaking world. In his work
Postmodernism or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism Jameson endeavors to portray the way of
social creation in the second half of the twentieth century, the period of late capitalism, and to
recognize it from different manifestations of social generation of going before capitalist periods. A
generous part of Jameson s Postmodernismor the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism is committed to
differential investigation of masterpieces and building design from what Jameson terms high
innovation and postmodern works. He describes the postmodern mode of generation as a social
prevailing in the wake of ideas like depthlessness or the concealment of depth, the fading of
influence and pastiche, terms which as per Jameson identify with the postmodern type of
production and experience.
The idea of postmodernism quickly raises the issue of periodization, involved by the prefix post
doled out to the time of modernism. What was the starting point of modernism and when did it
end? Is it safe to say that it is conceivable to define clear boundaries between modernism and
postmodernism? Jameson accepts that it is conceivable to discuss social modes with in a
characterized course of events. In any case, he limits his periodization of postmodernism to the
unbinding idea of social

Empowerment For Ministry Among The Philippines
Introduction An issue many pastors face today is the definitive difference between a called
professional clergy and a called laity and the necessary responsibilities for the empowerment of
laity within their specific missional context. This issue of empowerment for ministry among the
laity has long been a problem debated within the ranks of church leadership and the field of
practical theology. The average believer is faced with the challenge of developing a biblical
understanding of the call of God that is received from God for the fulfillment of their ministry,
which is necessary to form a clear understanding of the role of the laity within the church in light
of the professional clergy. This paper will focus upon the biblical understanding of the
priesthood of all believers, as the laos, or people of God and the role of the professional clergy to
equip, empower and encourage laity to flourish in the work in which God has called them to do.
The development of the historical views of lay ministry within the local church is also a
necessary component that will be addressed in dealing with this dilemma. This paper will also
seek to present biblical narratives presenting the importance of the role of both a called clergy and
a called laity for the successful continuation of a biblical model of the church within today s
society. Properly Defining the Roles of Clergy and Laity within the Pentecostal Church An essential
part of defining the difference between clergy and

I Didn t Learn From This System
The majority of my time in school was spent on busywork and note taking for tests. There was
very little room for exploration or the research into the details of various topics that caught my
attention. Everything was always simple and straightforward: this is what you need to know
because this is what will be on the tests and scoring well on the test is how you pass. I didn t learn
much from this system. In fact, almost all of that information was completely forgotten by the time
the next year rolled around.
There were some exceptions, however, most notably my high school biology class. My biology
teacher went above and beyond to teach us that biology is fundamental to our daily lives and
encouraged us to examine the various ways in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He then explains that while the US department of education has taken steps to include global
knowledge in its curriculum, many schools are underprepared to teach it given the current set up
of our education system, with standardized testing and traditional achievement consuming too
much of the student s time to allow for broader thinking. He then addresses the ideals that should
be cultivated in our classrooms and introduces the program World Savvy. He explains what it is,
how it has been largely successful, and some of the ways in which teachers are using it in their
lesson planning. He concludes the article by including quotes from a couple of the founders of
World Savvy, who argues that our aversion to complexity in our education system is a hurtle that
we must overcome and that the condition we live in is fundamentally global . Bornstein grips his
reader s attention right of the bat by informing them of results of a survey conducted by National
Geographic that tested the global literacy of college students in America, and then included the
survey for his readers to test themselves. He reveals that less than 30 percent passed this short
quiz, a troubling number, and even more alarming if the reader reaches the end of the article and
discovers that they, like myself, barely passed or even failed. This draws in his audience, which,
given that

Tim Hanson s The Classroom Teacher, Curious, Courageous,...
1. Is Danny Hanson, the classroom teacher, curious, courageous, or narrow minded? In the show
Boston Public, Danny Hanson is neither courageous nor narrow minded but rather curious. Danny
Hanson is curious due to his actions and views about the world. He portrays this when he asks
questions such as, What s going on? and Okay let me get this straight. These examples show that
Danny wants to understand all sides of the situations he comes across. Danny is also curious for
hearing all perspectives for a certain situation. This happens in the show Boston Public after two
students got into a fight. The fight was about someone saying the n word to a Caucasian and an
Africa American took that comment differently then what the speaker... Show more content on

Steven says things like the lesson Pushes controversy, The word stirs up too much hatred, and I
don t like the word. These all show that Steven doesn t want to hear about other peoples views
and basically sayings it s his way or the high way. So, out of the three options available, Steven,
the Principal, is narrow minded. 4. Does Andre s analogy work? Why or why not? Andre s
analogy I think does work. This is because of whom they are using as an example. Since Andre
used Danny s mom as the victim of a comment then it s going to be taken more seriously. So what
I mean is, that if Danny told his mom the n word, his mom would take it better from him rather
than Andre saying the same word to Danny s mom. So basically, if you know the person and
you know their background then they would take it better from you rather than a stranger who
doesn t know you at all. 5. Were you more surprised or impressed with Andre s ability to
articulate his emotions? Why? I believe I was neither surprise nor impressed with Andre s ability
to articulate his emotions. This is because I just accepted for what Andre had to say. Though if I
were to have been more surprise or impressed I would most likely be more impressed. This is
because Andre, who just got into a fight, said something very articulating and I wasn t expecting
that. The reason why I wasn t because yes, I stereotyped which I shouldn t and should expect the

Islam Project, Shah, The Empire Of The Safavid Empire
Alix Barry
C C Period 6
Islam Project, Shah Ismail of the Safavid Empire
Ismail I lived during a turbulent time in Iran s history. It was a period of political fragmentation
and decentralization [Richard C. Martin]. He was the founder of the Safavid Empire. In 1501, he
named himself the Shah, king, of the empire and proclaimed Twelver religion the official religion
of state. It took him almost over a decade to consolidate his control over all of Iran, where most of
the Persian population still practiced as Sunni. His Qizilbash military was given the task to convert
anyone on Safavid territory to Twelver Islamand the army succeeded. Ismail was a remarkable
leader when he set his mind to it, yet the Ottoman empire instigated a war against the Safavid
empire because of the increase of Shia population. Ismail was caught by surprise and the
Qizilbash were defeated. The aftermath of the battle was severe; Ismail was so embarrassed by
the defeat he became inattentive to any Qizilbash work and military affairs of state. He broke
down and started to write poems about pious Muslims and how they worship their god. The shah
died at age 36, after becoming an alcoholic, but the Safavid empire continued for over 200 years
after. The Safavid Empire was founded on the unified front of their population, their military
strength and intolerance for other beliefs but their own. Great military strength and the ability to
conquest many empires was not a very common attribute many kings had

  • 2. malcolm x Essays Malcolm X was a very interesting and complicated person. Throughout his life, Malcolm had exposure to practically every type of person the world had to offer. In his younger years, he excelled in his community predominately surrounded by whites. He then got into the hustling business within the black community which supplied for all types of people. After that, he joined the Nation of Islam, joining himself with many Muslims. Lastly, Malcolmwent on a Hajj to Africa, where his communication with a diverse group of people expanded. He then got caught as a burglar and was put in prison. As in many aspects of his life, the book gave more details of Malcolm s life inside the steel bars. Since no one was in jail with him that was interviewed in the film, we could not get a good presentation of others views of his experiences in jail. While in prison, Malcolm hears about the Nation of Islam through his family. The leader of the group, Elijah Mohammed had a central idea that all white men were devils. In learning this, Malcolm thought back to all of the white people he had previously encountered. It is easier for us to understand Malcolm s thought process after reading the book, since the film did not tell us of all of his relationships with white people. Malcolm then converted to Islam. Replacing his last name with X did more than just change his name, it changed his personality. He changed his last named because he did not want to be connected in any way with his old last name that was given to his ancestors by slave owners. The film really let us know his displeasure with his old last name. During an interview, Malcolm refused to tell his interviewer his given last name. I felt as though the movie was very helpful in learning about him as Malcolm X. The book would tell us about how Malcolm gave powerful speeches and little details about his preaching but you cannot replace the actual footage of his speeches. On several occasions, ... However, I did struggle every day to stay sane. It was very hard to stay focused in school and to socialize with friends and family. Eventually, I did get past my depression. I realized one day how bad my depression had gotten and I started to become aware that I needed to change. While it may not have worked for a lot of people, I healed myself. I started to appreciate everything in life that we take for granted. Like waking up healthy and not having to worry about bombs or landmines like some do in countries like Syria. I started to understand that I have a better life than a huge chunk of others around the world. Being able to be born in a country like ours, experiencing the things I have experienced, I started to tell myself I have no excuse to be sad about anything, I did not have that right when so many others have so much worse than me. This space station serves as a home for the crews of astronauts and cosmonauts. The space station is also a unique science laboratory. Several nations such as Canada, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United States, and eleven Member States of the European Space Agency(Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) worked together to build and use this space station. The space station is made of parts that were assembled by astronauts, in space itself. NASAis using this space station to learn more about the living and working conditions in space. These discoveries will help make it possible for them to find out if it is feasible to send humans farther into space than ever done in the past. • 6. Literary Devices In Romeo And Juliet Romeo and Juliet Literary Analysis Essay Literary devices are reveal several details about characters in stories, movies, plays, and other writings. Oxymorons are two opposites placed right next to each other. A paradox is simply a oxymoron except seperated and placed in a sentence. Lastly, a juxtaposition is contrasting two objects such as characters, places, and even their actions. William Shakespeare successfully added all of these literary devices into his famous play Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare indirectly revealed character traits for Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Laurence by using all three of these literary devices. Shakespeare used the figurative language to indirectly describe who Romeo is. Romeo and Mercutio argue with each other about the importance of dreams (1.4.11 103). During Mercutio s Queen Mab speech, it reveals that Romeo is a dreamer and Mercutio is not. This is a juxtaposition because Mercutio and Romeo have two different mindsets on dreams. It is a paradox because it talks about day in night which are two opposites in a sentence. Juliet tells the Nurse as she finds out Romeo is apart of the Montagues: My only love sprung from my only hate (1.5.136). This clarified that she is a risk taker and very rebellious for still wanting to love Romeo. • 8. The Movie The Help The film, The Help was a great movie but it was definitely an eye opener for me because as we research different eras we find that circumstances for Black women were always at the hands of someone else. Black women were referred to as Negros in this era and sometimes were called more derogatory names, that we need not mention. Blacks were not allowed to drink cokes, and were punished if they were caught drinking it. Unfortunately, Black women were mothers to their own children and they had to be mothers to the white children that they cared for. Black women had to leave their children with someone else while they cared for the white children. The mothers of those children were so busy doing book clubs, town meeting etc. that they didn t have time to take care of their own children. When the children were in need of attention, most times it was the maid that coddled the children and make sure that they were taken care of. In the movie the white children depended on the maid more than their own parents. The parents only picked the children up once a day to spend time with them or to even talk to them. Even the fathers didn t have time for the children and only saw them in passing as they were walking out the door. Black women potty trained the children that they cared for while the mothers carried on with their daily tasks. Even though Black women were treated unfairly, the white women often looked up to them and may have even asked for help with their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Madame Valmonde was unable to conceive a child and viewed this as a blessing from god and they raised her as if she was their own. She grew up to be beautiful and with a white appearance. • 14. The Ozone Hole And Polar Regions The Ozone Hole and the Polar Regions The Polar Regions of the Earth have slowly been fading away in the past two centuries, but with the introduction of a new and growing problem, the ozone hole, the Polar Regions are more vulnerable than ever before. The depletion of the ozone within the atmosphere has caused the atmosphereto alter its radiative effects and raise the overall climate of the Earth. The Earth s ozonelayer has continued to dwindle down in size and it has had profound effects on its radiative ability. The Earth s undergoes a natural process, known as the greenhouse effect, which involves greenhouse gasses to absorb heat and radiate it back towards Earth. This allows Earth to have a temperature that can support life. Due the widening of the ozone hole, the greenhouse effect has become accelerated. The substances that destroy ozone molecules, including CFCs, are also very strong greenhouse gasses which intensify the greenhouse effect and cause the lower troposphere to warm. Furthermore, the depletion of ozone allows ultraviolet rays to easily pass through the stratosphere and hit Earth, which, in turn, raises the temperature of the lower atmosphere. This rise in temperature has caused a great deal of implications in the Polar Regions. The Climate Change and the Polar Regions The Polar Regions are made mostly of ice and are very susceptible to heat. Human Rights And Women s Rights Introduction: If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women s rights and women s rights are human rights once and for all. On September 5, 1995, 180 countries came together in Beijing China to hear first lady Hillary Clinton s speech about women s rights. This speech was the United Nations Fourth World Conference of Women. The target audience for this speech is governments and other organizations that can help meet the goal of making women s rights human rights. She addressed problems that every single country faced concerning the liberties of women, and why it was important that they receive these freedoms. The speech was courageous and considered path breaking too many in its demand for action. The great challenge of this conference is to give voice to women everywhere whose experiences go unnoticed, whose words go unheard. Hillary Clinton has become famous for the statement: Women s rights are human rights. She is known as one of the greatest women of our time, combining intelligence, compassion and bravery. The world wide web is growing immensely and it is filled with a plethora of information that is easily accessible to anyone and everyone with an internet capable device. Students today are constantly glued to technology, whether it is for leisure purposes or school purposes, thus making them susceptible to reading and gathering accurate as well as false information from the internet. Many students do not know how to navigate the web effectively or will not check a source s authority when doing research, and as a result, they gather faulty information. The fact that students can easily access information on the web when doing research, it is imperative for teachers to teach students how to properly evaluate websites in order to assure that they are gathering authentic information from credible sources. There are certain criteria educators and students can use in order to confirm the authenticity of a website. In this paper, I used ten of Kathy Schrock s criteria to evaluate two websites to determine which is a better source for students researching information on the topic The Human Body. Section I: Introduction West Africa has the highest infant mortality rate in the world for every 1000 live births, 70 children die before their first birthday (Wang, 2014). National infant mortality rates vary from 18.8 deaths per 1000 live births in Cape Verde to 89.9 deaths per 1000 live births in Guinea Bissau. Nonetheless, the leading causes of infant mortality are largely the same across the region: neonatal conditions (26 percent), malaria (21 percent), pneumonia (21 percent), diarrhea (17 percent), measles (6 percent) and HIV/AIDS (4 percent). The desired children hypothesis of fertility asserts that high fertility primarily reflects desired number of children (Pritchett, 1994). In this regard, high infant mortality may motivate women to have more children to attain their preferred family size. Thus aside the important population health implications of reducing high infant mortality rates, demographic theory predicts that improved child survival is accompanied by declines in fertility reflecting reduced demand for replacement births to achieve a given target family size. The influence of reduced infant mortality on fertility decline has also been established empirically in a wide range of settings (Barnum, 1988). Declines in infant mortality, falls in fertility rates, and lower average family sizes lead to changes in population age structure and stimulate increased female labor ... • 32. The Dust Bowl Effect On The Great Depression The Dust Bowl s Effect on the Great Depression The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, pays homage to the critical impact the Great Depression had on dust bowl farmers. The growing demand for wheat products forced farmers to overgraze their property. This reduced the overall usefulness and biodiversity of the land, and attributed to the desertification of their establishments. With this, the once lush fields turned to dust, which blew away with the commencement of the severe drought in the early 1930s. Steinbeck utilizes the lives of the Joad family to depict how farmers were often forced to flee their homes in search of better jobs during this time period. Because of the stock market s demise, no one was purchasing their crops. Banks were required to drive farmers out of their homes, as they could not afford to keep supporting them without profit. The agricultural devastation of the Dust Bowl intensified the economical impact of the Great Depression and added to the misery of the migrant workers. The wrath of nature unleashed itself on the migrant farmers during the 1930s. During this time period, the entirety of the Midwest was plagued with drought. In fact, new scientific studies found that the drought of the 1930s was the worst in North America in the last 300 years (The National Drought Mitigation Center). The photography of The Godfather as an entire film is very planned and used specifically to generate moods, and have great psychological affect. This is just as true for the very first series of shots for the film, and perhaps more important since these first shots will give the audience the initial feeling of the film, and set a tone for the picture. The first shot is highly dramatic in its lighting method, and the audience is drawn in immediately to one single detail. We can now see part of the back and side of the Godfather, (Marlon Brando) but still we have only a slight highlight on his side, and no detail. Now the man gets up and moves to Brando s side, and he too is in complete shadow; we can only really make out the fact that there are two figures present here, no more. Then the shot changes as the man leaves the Godfather s side, and it is a revealing frontal MCU of Brando. This shot is lit much more than the previous shot. Where the other shot s background was pitch black, this shot is lit so that almost the whole space and all objects in it are visible. Brando has a key, fill and backlight on him, and his character is revealed with much intensity because of the dramatic light change from shot to shot. When the shot comes back to the man, in an over the shoulder (Brando) style, again the backround is totally black. Having the man in that particular lighting, and having Brando lit the way he is serves two psychological purposes. First, having the constant black background behind the man isolates his problem and makes us aware of how consumed he is with his problem. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. The Management Programs Of A Computer Introduction Operating systems, ( OS ) are the management programs of a computer. First it is booted into the computer by a boot program, and then it manages all other programs on the computer. These other programs are called applications, and they utilize an operating system by making requests for process service power through an API, or application program interface. Users then interact directly with an operating system through a graphical user interface or command language. History The earliest computers lacked any form of operating system because they were simple mainframes. The machines were primitive and programs were often entered into the system one bit at a time, through many mechanical switches and plug boards. There were no operating systems during the first phase of computer history from 1940 1955. By the 1950s, punch cards were introduced and made it so switches were not as necessary any more. The IBM 701, from General Motors Research Laboratories, was the first system that implemented an operating system. The systems generally ran one job at a time, which was indicated by whatever was on the punch card. This is called single stream batch processing. Computers were just exotic experimental equipment, and mainly tested theory. The use plugboards would direct the computer. Without operating systems, there is no overlap between computation, I/O, think time, and response time. The specific goal was to handle tables of numbers. Libraries ... • 41. Basketball Injury A male basketball player came into the clinic complaining of back pain that sometimes travels down his leg. This athlete has a long history( 3+ years) of back pain and often uses advil to get through practice and games. The pain often starts as pinching in the lumbar spine and as it gets worse, becomes a tight shooting pain into the left leg. The pain is often described as tightness or pulling with no numbness or tingling. He often has difficulty bending over to pick something up or tying his shoes while standing. This athlete has no previous injuries besides multiple inversion ankle sprains and has never observed any SHARDD on his back or down the back of his leg. Upon observation, sway back and excessive kyphosis of the thoracic spine was noted,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, even when the right leg was lifted, the pain was reproduced in the left. He was also only able to lift his legs approximately 40 degrees off the table. I then tried to explain the slump test to the athlete. For directions, I explained that you want to be sitting and have bad posture. With his femur in a dangling position, dorsiflexion and his knee at 60 degrees flexion caused a reproduction of symptoms. This was exasperated when the athlete attempted to lift his legs at all or put his head down. From here we checked piriformis using two different tests/checks. First, we had him prone, knees bent and together. He was instructed to let his feet fall out. His left leg was close to vertical whereas the right was 30 degrees from 90. I felt comfortable with all of these special tests as they did not involve therapist hand positioning, just clear instructions. After explaining the slump test, I thought it would be beneficial to also demonstrate it since the cue of have bad posture did not seem to work initially. From this experience I have become more cognizant of how I provide instructions. Although my intention is not to insult the athlete, I need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Analysis Of The Odd Couple Overall, the female and male versions of the tragicomedy show, The Odd Couple , had many similarities and had had the same basic story lines. The main character, Felix and Florence, each were going through a divorce. They each move in with their friend, Oscar and Olive, because they have also recently went through a divorce and feel lonely living in such a huge place alone. The friends of both Felix and Florence are concerned that they would kill themselves at the beginning of the show; they both swallowed a bottle of green pills, but ended up getting them out of their system before it did any harm to them. Felix and Florence end up being extremely emotional clean freaks while Oscar and Olive are more chill and sloppy, these differences caused confrontations with them living together. They try to ease the tension by going on dates with Eventually it becomes too much and Oscar and Olive kick Felix and foreigners that live in the same building as them. During their date , both Felix and Florence tell their dates about the problems and they end up crying together over their past spouses. Florence out, where there run away to the foreign couple that they meet earlier in the show. The Show ends the same way it begins, with the guys at their guys night and the girls at their girls night. Although the overall story was the same for both shows, where were some major differences as well as some minor ones that I noticed while watching them. One of the major ones was that the guys were playing poker while the girls with playing trivial pursuit. This caused for a large chuck of earlier scenes to have some differences that pertained to the different games that were being played. Oscar and Olive both were low on money, especially in the beginning, but for different reasons. Oscar gambled away a lot of his money, and Olive sent large amounts of money to her ex husband. The lengths of the marriages were different too, Felix s marriage had lasted for 12 years, where Florence s marriage lasted for 14 years. When Felix finally broke the glass mug out of frustration, it broke lightly, in a few large pieces that all stayed on the stage. When Florence broke he mug, it shattered into many tinier pieces and even splashed up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Postmodernism Or The Cultural Logic Of Late Capitalism... Fredric Jameson is admired as a standout amongst the most imperative and persuasive artistic and social pundit and theoretician in the Marxist convention of the English speaking world. In his work Postmodernism or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism Jameson endeavors to portray the way of social creation in the second half of the twentieth century, the period of late capitalism, and to recognize it from different manifestations of social generation of going before capitalist periods. A generous part of Jameson s Postmodernismor the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism is committed to differential investigation of masterpieces and building design from what Jameson terms high innovation and postmodern works. He describes the postmodern mode of generation as a social prevailing in the wake of ideas like depthlessness or the concealment of depth, the fading of influence and pastiche, terms which as per Jameson identify with the postmodern type of production and experience. The idea of postmodernism quickly raises the issue of periodization, involved by the prefix post doled out to the time of modernism. What was the starting point of modernism and when did it end? Is it safe to say that it is conceivable to define clear boundaries between modernism and postmodernism? Jameson accepts that it is conceivable to discuss social modes with in a characterized course of events. In any case, he limits his periodization of postmodernism to the unbinding idea of social ... • 44. Empowerment For Ministry Among The Philippines Introduction An issue many pastors face today is the definitive difference between a called professional clergy and a called laity and the necessary responsibilities for the empowerment of laity within their specific missional context. This issue of empowerment for ministry among the laity has long been a problem debated within the ranks of church leadership and the field of practical theology. The average believer is faced with the challenge of developing a biblical understanding of the call of God that is received from God for the fulfillment of their ministry, which is necessary to form a clear understanding of the role of the laity within the church in light of the professional clergy. This paper will focus upon the biblical understanding of the priesthood of all believers, as the laos, or people of God and the role of the professional clergy to equip, empower and encourage laity to flourish in the work in which God has called them to do. The development of the historical views of lay ministry within the local church is also a necessary component that will be addressed in dealing with this dilemma. This paper will also seek to present biblical narratives presenting the importance of the role of both a called clergy and a called laity for the successful continuation of a biblical model of the church within today s society. • 45. I Didn t Learn From This System The majority of my time in school was spent on busywork and note taking for tests. There was very little room for exploration or the research into the details of various topics that caught my attention. Everything was always simple and straightforward: this is what you need to know because this is what will be on the tests and scoring well on the test is how you pass. I didn t learn much from this system. In fact, almost all of that information was completely forgotten by the time the next year rolled around. There were some exceptions, however, most notably my high school biology class. My biology teacher went above and beyond to teach us that biology is fundamental to our daily lives and encouraged us to examine the various ways in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He then addresses the ideals that should be cultivated in our classrooms and introduces the program World Savvy. He explains what it is, how it has been largely successful, and some of the ways in which teachers are using it in their lesson planning. He concludes the article by including quotes from a couple of the founders of World Savvy, who argues that our aversion to complexity in our education system is a hurtle that we must overcome and that the condition we live in is fundamentally global . Bornstein grips his reader s attention right of the bat by informing them of results of a survey conducted by National Geographic that tested the global literacy of college students in America, and then included the survey for his readers to test themselves. • 46. Tim Hanson s The Classroom Teacher, Curious, Courageous,... 1. Is Danny Hanson, the classroom teacher, curious, courageous, or narrow minded? In the show Boston Public, Danny Hanson is neither courageous nor narrow minded but rather curious. Danny Hanson is curious due to his actions and views about the world. He portrays this when he asks questions such as, What s going on? and Okay let me get this straight. These examples show that Danny wants to understand all sides of the situations he comes across. Danny is also curious for hearing all perspectives for a certain situation. This happens in the show Boston Public after two students got into a fight. Steven says things like the lesson Pushes controversy, The word stirs up too much hatred, and I don t like the word. These all show that Steven doesn t want to hear about other peoples views and basically sayings it s his way or the high way. So, out of the three options available, Steven, the Principal, is narrow minded. 4. Does Andre s analogy work? Why or why not? Andre s analogy I think does work. This is because of whom they are using as an example. Since Andre used Danny s mom as the victim of a comment then it s going to be taken more seriously. So what I mean is, that if Danny told his mom the n word, his mom would take it better from him rather than Andre saying the same word to Danny s mom. So basically, if you know the person and you know their background then they would take it better from you rather than a stranger who doesn t know you at all. 5. Were you more surprised or impressed with Andre s ability to articulate his emotions? Why? I believe I was neither surprise nor impressed with Andre s ability to articulate his emotions. This is because I just accepted for what Andre had to say. Though if I were to have been more surprise or impressed I would most likely be more impressed. This is because Andre, who just got into a fight, said something very articulating and I wasn t expecting that. The reason why I wasn t because yes, I stereotyped which I shouldn t and should expect the most from anyone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Islam Project, Shah, The Empire Of The Safavid Empire Alix Barry C C Period 6 Islam Project, Shah Ismail of the Safavid Empire Ismail I lived during a turbulent time in Iran s history. It was a period of political fragmentation and decentralization [Richard C. Martin]. He was the founder of the Safavid Empire. In 1501, he named himself the Shah, king, of the empire and proclaimed Twelver religion the official religion of state. It took him almost over a decade to consolidate his control over all of Iran, where most of the Persian population still practiced as Sunni. His Qizilbash military was given the task to convert anyone on Safavid territory to Twelver Islamand the army succeeded. Ismail was a remarkable leader when he set his mind to it, yet the Ottoman empire instigated a war against the Safavid empire because of the increase of Shia population. Ismail was caught by surprise and the Qizilbash were defeated. The aftermath of the battle was severe; Ismail was so embarrassed by the defeat he became inattentive to any Qizilbash work and military affairs of state. He broke down and started to write poems about pious Muslims and how they worship their god. The shah died at age 36, after becoming an alcoholic, but the Safavid empire continued for over 200 years after. The Safavid Empire was founded on the unified front of their population, their military strength and intolerance for other beliefs but their own. Great military strength and the ability to conquest many empires was not a very common attribute many kings had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
