Sarah Orne Jewett was born in 1849 in South Berwick, Maine, where she lived her entire life. At age 19, she published her first story and was encouraged by William Dean Howells to publish her stories in a book. Her career rose steadily and she became a prominent literary figure of her time, known for her regional works set in rural New England such as The Country of the Pointed Firs.
