Christina Pallotta was elected Co-Chair of the Spanish and Italian Departmental Student Council at Queen's University in her 4th year. Her responsibilities included hiring staff, training future chairs, overseeing budgets/events, and attending meetings. She had to balance these duties with her coursework. Many events were planned during busy times, so she learned to effectively manage her time to plan successful events like "Wine & Cheese" nights and trivia nights, while still focusing on her studies. Her time management skills helped her fulfill her duties as Co-Chair and have aided her in future roles.

3. SITUATION
In my 4th year of university, I was elected as the
Co-Chair for the Spanish and Italian
Departmental Student Council. With this
position came an abundance of responsibilities
that I learned to balance alongside my school
work.
Responsibilities included:
• Hiring staff and volunteers
• Training staff and future DSC Chairs
• Responsible for overseeing budgets,
marketing, advertising and event planning
• Attended Faculty Board meetings and
assemblies
• Communicated issues, awareness and
events

4. ACTION
Many of our events were planned
throughout the semester when students
found themselves preoccupied with a
lot of course work and midterms. Our
events provided fun and interactive
study breaks for our hardworking
Spanish and Italian students.
Hosting events such as our “Wine &
Cheese” night, along with our
departmental “Trivia Night” forced
myself to time manage event planning
along with my own personal studying.

5. RESULT
My ability to time manage proved to
be successful. Our events were
continuously successful and
generated a lot of interest amongst
faculty and students.
I was able to stay focused
throughout my busy school schedule
and I successfully fulfilled my duties
as a Co-Chair. The time management
skills I acquired during this position
have also aided me in my future
endeavors.

SENIOR WARDROBE SPECIALIST

7. SITUATION
I am currently employed by the
fashion retail store, Olsen. We
organize shopping events for
our customers called Exklusiv.
Being a part of management
gives me drive to always do my
best for the store, our clients
and my team. My initiative to go
above and beyond expectations
while organizing this event was
in dedication to our loyal and
outstanding clients.

8. ACTION
When organizing this event, I
wanted to provide our customers
with a great experience. I decided
to organize an in-store fashion
show that demonstrated the many
ways different items could be
combined to create spectacular
outfits. My partner and I took the
initiative to find sponsors who
would add to our wonderful event.
Our goal was to make our clients
feel exclusive, fashionable and
welcomed.

9. RESULT
Our event was very successful.
Our client turn-out was extremely
high and we received great
feedback. Our store made top
sales in our region and we had
extremely satisfied clients. At
least one piece of clothing from
each outfit that was modeled
sold. Our team initiative brought
in sponsors such as Fiamma,
Godiva, and Ta-Ze. We provided a
fun, welcoming atmosphere full of
shopping, music, refreshments
and friends. Our clients now are
always anticipating our nex event!

ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT PROGRAM

11. SITUATION
During my undergraduate degree, I
volunteered and became certified
as a member of the English
Language Support Program at
Queen’s University.
As a language supporter I was
required to provide assistance to
International students who were
learning English along with their
studies. I served as a “buddy” to
assist the student in any troubles
they were facing while adapting to
a new language and culture.

12. ACTION
The English Language Support
Program encouraged supporters to
assist students in everyday situations
with their language developments. My
goal was to provide assistance in an
environment where my student felt
welcomed and safe.
I supported my student for 2-5 hours a
week, 2-3 days a week.
Communication at times would be
limited but expressing patience,
understanding and compassion were
always crucial.

13. RESULT
Over the course of the year, I
successfully assisted my student
become comfortable with conducting
everyday activities in English. I always
provided him with confident feedback
and encouragement. By the end of our
time together, he was comfortable
holding longer conversations, asking
for corrections, conquering social
anxieties, and overcoming one of his
biggest challenges; having the
confidence to order from a menu and
placing orders in dining
establishments.

14. FLEXIBILITY/ADAPTABILITY
AU PAIR WORKER IN ITALY

15. SITUATION
I moved to Rome, Italy and
spent 3 months being an
English Au Pair. I was a live-in
nanny/English tutor for three
girls under the age of 12.
I was forced to adapt to a
different culture, family
customs and become flexible
with my job role and working
hours.

16. ACTION
In the 3 months I spent in Italy, I
adapted to a new family very
quickly and was able to work with
them in a kind, caring, responsible
manner. I adapted to new family
rules and lived by their strict
schedule. My goal was to be as
flexible as I could be while still
implementing daily activities and
routines in English. I wanted to
learn as much as possible and
was willing to work in order to
learn. When I was not working, I
was on call 24/7.

17. RESULT
By the end of my stay, the
young girls improved their
English and I improved my
Italian.
We were all able to get along
tremendously and we all still
keep in touch. I was able to
successfully adapt to this
family’s lifestyle and the
flexibility I offered them with
my work schedule was greatly
appreciated.
