The Congos were descendants of African slaves who arrived in Panama during Spanish colonization and helped build the first city of Panama. They are known for their folkloric dances and festivals like Los Congos de Palenque. Black West Indians also immigrated during the construction of the Panama Canal. Some famous Panamanians of African descent include authors Carlos "Cubena" Guillermo Wilson and Alberto Barrow as well as athletes Rodney Cline "Rod" Carew, Bayano Kamani, and Irving Saladino. Panama celebrates its African heritage with events throughout the month of May.
