  3. 3. The Golden Gate Bridge The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, a narrow, 400-foot (120 m) deep strait that serves as the mouth of the San Francisco Bay
  4. 4. <ul><li>The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge across Golden Gate , the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean . </li></ul><ul><li>The Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1937. </li></ul><ul><li>The project cost over $27 million </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>The bridge is a lovely shade of &quot;International Orange,&quot; not really gold. </li></ul><ul><li>It was selected for the way it blends with the natural elements surrounding it. </li></ul><ul><li>The U.S. Navy wanted to paint it black with yellow stripes to be sure it was seen by passing ships! </li></ul><ul><li>The Golden Gate required the tallest towers, the longest, thickest cables, and the largest underwater foundation piers ever built. </li></ul>

Not in history has a modern imperial city been so completely destroyed <ul><li>At 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, a major earthquake struck San Francisco and Northern California. </li></ul><ul><li>More than three-quarters of the city lay in ruins, including almost all of the downtown core. </li></ul><ul><li>More than half the city's population of 400,000 were left homeless. </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>After being devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt. </li></ul><ul><li>San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination renowned for : </li></ul><ul><li>- Victorian architecture, </li></ul><ul><li>- the Golden Gate Bridge, </li></ul><ul><li>- Alcatraz Island, </li></ul><ul><li>- the cable cars, </li></ul><ul><li>Coit Tower, and </li></ul><ul><li>Chinatown. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Alcatraz is a smaller island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay . It was a lighthouse , then a military fortification, then a military prison with the highest security in US. The worst criminals were sent there
  11. 12. <ul><li>Because the cold water and strong sea currents, Alcatraz was an ideal location for a prison. </li></ul><ul><li>During its 29 years of operation, no prisoners successfully escaped. </li></ul><ul><li>37 prisoners were involved in 14 attempts, 2 men trying twice; </li></ul><ul><li>7 were shot and killed, </li></ul><ul><li>2 drowned, and the rest were recaptured. 2 prisoners made it off the island but were returned, one in 1945 and one in 1962. </li></ul>
