Utilitarianism, By John Stuart Mill
Utilitarianism is a doctrine in normative ethics that is outlined and defended by many philosophers,
including the English philosopher John Stuart Mill as a standard to determine what are right and
wrong actions. At its most basic claim, the right course of action one must take should be in the
interest of maximizing what is known as utility. The right course of action is determined as being right
if it maximizes the total benefit and happiness gained, while at the same time reducing the greatest
amount of pain for the greatest number of people. To put it simply, utilitarianism merits the greatest
good for the greatest number. In Utilitarianism, John Stuart Mill details his explanation and support of
the theory, and provides common criticisms of the theory that he refutes throughout the piece. A
couple of these critiques include claims that the concept of utility is opposed to the concept of
pleasure, and that it renders men cold and unsympathizing (p. 20). With conviction, Mill is able to
successfully vindicate and define utilitarianism from critiques, although he could go beyond defining
by providing examples and illustrations of utilitarianism in the way that critiques perceive it to be in
order to demonstrate faults and holes that would arise. The principle of utility is a concept that was
primarily introduced academically by philosopher Jeremy Bentham and later confounded upon to
become what is known as the Greatest Happiness Principle. Bentham focuses on the

Learning The End Result Of Stress
Learning the end result of stress I also learned to notice symptoms of stress so that I can catch it early.
Symptoms such as high blood pressure, headaches, having high tension, anxiety, procrastination,
increase of smoking or drinking, and lack of sleep, all of these symptoms should be monitored by you
because they will effect on how you function in the workplace. Noticing these symptoms you need to
take action and make changes or the organization needs to make changes. A way that an organization
can help reduce employee stress is to redesign the job, putting the right employee with the right job,
and share what expectations are. Taking in all this information about stress has really informed in what
to be aware of, and in the future ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To truly improve your ability in the four emotional intelligence skills, you need to better understand
each sill and what I looks like in actions (Bradberry Greaves, pg. 23). Following the strategies that I
learned in Professor Girton s class my awareness of emotional intelligence has increased. Self
awareness strategies that I followed to understand myself more was that I took the time to ask people I
know to provide feedback about myself, spot my emotions in films, and know who and what pushes
my buttons. Although there are many other strategies, these were just several that helped see who I
am. My social awareness has improved where I can read people and tell a certain situation did not go
well. By following some of these strategies; stepping into their shoes, catching the mood of the room,
and watching body language. Exercising these strategies has helped tremendously with understanding
and communicating with people that surround me. Part three, perspective, and I have a fantastic
perspective about organizational leadership. I will share my viewpoint, beliefs, and opinion about
leadership in organizations. Deeper into my perspective I will elaborate my purpose, motivation, my
own mission statement, and in doing so it should portray what objectives and expectations that I hold
for myself. Before making organizational leadership my major and enrolling at Northern Kentucky
University I was working at a bar and grill called the

Fara Alternate Ending
Fara cracked one eye, and was blinded momentarily by white light. When her vision cleared and
adjusted, she opened the other and viewed her surroundings. She was in a hallway, just along a baby
blue wall; nurses and doctors with stethoscopes around their necks hurried about, ignoring them.
Leaning up, she looked for Xhaiden, and was relieved to see him in a stretcher just in front of her.
Their backpacks were at their feet, untouched.
His wounds were cleaned up, but blood still found a way through his abraded skin. She observed her
own hands, touching her forehead. Her own injuries were the same as that of his. Puzzled, she asked
the nearest nurse a simple question concerning them, who was a tall woman with long, blonde hair

She found ink pens to be more resourceful than her knife; and besides, they would need another thing
to protect themselves with, in case the knife had been taken from them or went missing. She sped to
the dry food, taking as much as she could that would fit in their backpacks, along with four water
bottles. Nearly dropping the groceries, she shuffled to the checkout counter, dropping them clumsily
on the smooth conveyor belt.
The cashier, a young teen, appeared exhausted. She looked longingly at a clock above the entrance,
which read 3:14. Fara was shocked at the time, but relieved somewhat; they could use the rest of the
night to catch up on the sleep that they desperately needed, much more than food, water, and pens.
The working teenager swiped the supplies over a scanner, and she reached into her backpack pocket to
take out the money. The cash register rang up a total of forty seven and three eighths keys; Fara
begrudgingly complied to pay the amount of exchange. The cashier packed her things neatly into a
plastic bag, and she handed it to her without saying a word.
She calmly walked out of the store, and strode to Xhaiden, who was clutching the gauze, and
immediately took his hand off when he saw her, embarrassed. Thank you, he said

A chemical change is a change that alters the identity of a substance. A chemical change can be
identified by five things: change in mass, formation of a precipitate, release of heat and/or light, color
change, or giving off gas. Physical changes occurred in four out of the eight experiments completed in
this lab. The first was experiment one, the salt and water. The salt was added to water but when the
water evaporated the salt remained. The water changed to the vapor form of water and the salt did not
change. The second was experiment two, the candle. When the candle was lit the heat given off from
the fire melted the wax beneath it. Melting is a physical change because the liquid wax is still wax, its
usual form is just a solid. Experiment four dealt with ripping paper. This was a physical change
because, although the paper was being ripped apart, it was (and still is) paper. The smaller pieces did
not change the mass or any other factor of it except the surface area of each piece. Experiment seven
dealt with vinegar being added to milk. The vinegar did not change but the milk was curdled by the
vinegar. Although the milk was curdled, the milk remained milk. The composition stayed the same.
Each of these experiments showed no change in a substance so as it changed to another substance.
Chemical changes occurred in five out of the eight experiments completed in this lab. Although the
main focus of experiment two was

Hurricane Mitch Effects
Introduction Natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, seaquakes, and volcanic eruptions are
all events that frequent the country of Nicaragua and its neighbors in Central America and the
Caribbean. But one of the most devastating natural disasters to affect the country, Hurricane Mitch,
has had a lasting effect on Nicaragua. There was an approximate of 3,000 deaths, 1,000 missing
persons, 900,000 injured persons. The hurricane caused damage to 50,000 homes, 340 schools, 90
health care centers, 40 health posts and 6 hospitals across the country (Christopolos, et al, 2010). This
paper will examine the conditions of Nicaragua before and after Hurricane Mitch and answer the
question, what man made factors played a role in the severe devastation of the country? First, the
paper will discuss the major hazardous natural events that occurred in the wake of Hurricane Mitch
and their effect on the country. Then the effect of human influence in geography, politics and social
structure will be analyzed. Finally, the paper dissect the socio economic effect Hurricane Mitch had on
the country of Nicaragua.
Hazardous Natural Event Though Hurricane Mitch never made direct landfall, the 50 inches of rain it
brought, led to lasting damage for the country of Nicaragua. Damage to infrastructure, roads, and
buildings pushed the country 30 50 years back in development according to Menendez Duerte,
Marquinez, and Devoli (2003). They found that the heavy rains and floods led to

Disability and the Media
Portraying The Disabled In the media today, people with disabilities are perceived as tragic heroes or
as medical miracles. They are rarely seen for their intelligence or for their accomplishments excluding
their overcoming disability hardships. The textbook, Everything s an Argument, contains an excerpt
from Charles A. Riley II s book Disability and the Media: Prescriptions for Change. Riley, a
journalism professor at New York s Baruch College, uses appeal to ethos, logos, and pathos to
persuade his audience that their methods of portraying disabled people are in dire need of change.
Riley reports that disabled celebrities are seen as the object of pity, ultimately depriving them of
feelings of normality. As well as pointing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses such diction as allegorical and hagiographer, as well as providing the definitions or
backgrounds of certain terms along the borders of the text. Using such words and providing their
definitions gives the reader a sense of feeling that what they are reading is important. This helps make
his argument effective because the reader will acknowledge the authors good sense of vocabulary and
that alone will show he is even more credible. The author uses this as an appeal to ethos because he is
gaining credibility from his use of diction. One of the appeals that make Riley s argument very
effective is his appeal to pathos. He compares his appeal to how a person with a disability is displayed
as a poster child in exchange for sympathy and donations, bringing her financial rewards of
sponsorships, motivational speaking gigs, and modeling contracts at the expense of being turned into a
latter day poster child (642). This effectively supports Riley s claim because the audience will now
feel sympathetic for the disabled portrayed in the media as someone needing assistance or a sponsor.
Another example is when he attempts to determine how much the media is demeaning disabled people
as a group, It is impossible to know the full degree of damage wreaked by the demeaning and wildly
inaccurate portrayal of people with disabilities, nor is it altogether clear whether much current
progress is

Examples Of Integrity In Sir Gawain
Sir Gawain Integrity Essay The main theme of this story is integrity. Integrity is the adherence to a
code of values. The main protagonist of this romance, Sir Gawain, is a knight. A knight is known for
displaying chivalry. Similarly, a knight is expected to show integrity. Throughout the story Sir Gawain
s integrity is put to the ultimate test. Sir Gawain s actions exhibit integrity when he passed tests where
he faced seduction, a test of loyalty, and a test of facing his fears. First, Sir Gawain exhibits integrity
when he declines the advances made by the lord s wife. A knight is to act in a noble and respectful
manner no matter the circumstance. Giving in to seduction from the lord s wife would not only be

Avianca Flight 052 Case Study
Culture in the Cockpit
History of Avianca Flight 052 On January 25th, 1990, Avianca Flight 052, a Boeing 707, departed
Bogotá, Colombia, South America, enroute to JFK International Airport, New York, after making a
scheduled intermediate stop in Medellin, Colombia, South America (FAA, 2017). The flight departed
Medellin at 1508 EST with 149 passengers and 9 crewmembers on board (Krause, 2003). Due to
weather conditions at JFK there were numerous flight delays for inbound aircraft, and Avianca Flight
052 was given three separate holding instructions while enroute to JFK (Krause, 2003). Shortly after
2133 EST, Avianca Flight 052 crashed in a wooded area near Cove Neck, Long Island, New York, as a
result of fuel starvation while returning for a second approach to landing at JFK (NTSB, 1991). The
captain of Flight 052 had over 16,000 hours of flight time, with more than 1,500 hours in the 707
(Krause, 2003). The first officer had substantially less experience with about 1,800 hours of total flight
time, and only 64 hours in the 707 (Krause, 2003). The second officer, or flight engineer, had over
10,000 hours total flight time, and more than 3,000 of that was in the 707 (Krause, 2003). All three
crewmembers were citizens of the Republic of Colombia, and the captain was 52 years old, the first
officer was 28, and the second officer was 45 years old (NTSB, 1991). Just prior to the crash the
actual weather at JFK was poor. The ceilings were reported to be 200 feet above the

Black Culture And Its Effects On Society
Urban areas are known for their large amounts of minority populations while rural areas are usually
associated with people of Caucasian descent. The word urban has become synonymous with the
phrase, inner city. Historically, these terms strengthen the idea of white flight which is defined as the
departure of whites from places (such as urban neighborhoods or schools) increasingly or
predominantly populated by minorities (Merriam Webster). Both of these words are often used as
adjectives to describe people who are lazy and insolent. This feeds directly into harmful stereotypes
about minority populations such as black men being unintelligent and lazy human beings who depend
on welfare. These stereotypes do not discuss the fact that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Politicians need to be more open to allowing vacant lots to be turned into gardens that can be used by
the community.
As seen by the film Maquilapolis, there are multiple environmental issues that disproportionately
impact oppressed groups. These issues can often be tied to most of the world s relationship with
capitalism. In Maquilapolis, the women are in such a low socioeconomic status that they can t afford
to find another job or move out of their neighborhood. Similarly, food deserts (parts of the country
lacking fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy foods) are prominent in minority areas because they
don t have the transportation or money for nutritious foods. Recently, it s been discovered that income

The Importance Of Being A Good Waitress
I have been waitressing almost two years, during this long period of time, I learned the importance of
being a good waitress. By being a successful waitress I am not only getting excellent tips, but I am
also making my customers remember my service. I enjoy the time I spend talking with my customers
and taking care of them. I meet a lot of interesting people since I have started working at the
restaurant. In order to become a successful waitress, a waitress has to take good care of her customers
and be aware of what is happening in her surroundings. First of all, when I notice that I have
customers sitting in my section, I finish my other chores quickly and walk to my table. Once I am
there, I give them a friendly greeting and ask How are you guys doing today? so we can have some
small talk. This action shows most of my customers that I care and have interest in them. Of course,
everything has exceptions. Some customers do not like it if their server speaks too much, because they
want to enjoy the peaceful and quiet environment. Therefore, I will take their drink orders and
carefully remember any of their special requests. For example, drink without ice, drink with extra ice,
sweet tea without lemon, etc. I promptly go to the kitchen to make their drink orders and bring them
out as soon as possible. After I deliver their drinks, I ask them if they would like to start with some
appetizers. If they do order appetizers, I let the chief know as quickly as possible.

Adjacency Paper
Humans have a fundamental need to belong and have social relationships, and therefore form groups
to fulfill these basic human needs (Baumeister Leary, 1995). The tendency to gravitate to similar
individuals when building social ties is a well known feature of human behaviour, and is referred to as
homophily (McPherson et al., 2001). It is possible that the tendency for homophily within populations,
particularly the perception of physical similarity, influences seating preference more frequently than
expected by chance in day to day social interactions (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011). This
increases the chances of interacting with similar others and decreases the chances of interacting with
dissimilar others simply based on proximity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that the converse is true: if not sitting beside women, men must be sitting beside other
men, or alone entirely, which will lead to a positive index of adjacency. The index of adjacency
cannot, however, determine whether the effect is driven primarily by men or women, only that they
tend to avoid sitting beside each other. Thus, if my hypotheses are supported, the index of adjacency
scores will be less than zero, overall. A two tailed t tests, comparing the mean index of adjacency

hypotheses. An adjacency will be defined only as a person sitting directly beside another

most often there is English. The capital of New Zealand is Wellington. There are many differences and
similarities between the US and New Zealand. One thing that is different between the two is that the
people in New Zealand drive on the left side. There are also differences and similarities in the
schooling. According to New Zealand Now, there are four school terms running from late January to

According to Roy Morgan Research, one problem I researched that came up in New Zealand was
poverty and the gap between the rich and poor. This can happen a lot all over the world. This could be
happening for many reasons but the main reason it stated was that people are losing their jobs and don
t have any income then have no choice but to leave their home, so then they end up living on the
streets. The people there are trying to help it but it s becoming hard to so they can t really do anything
about it. Some people have family they can go live with until they can find another job but some don t
and have to do it all on their own.
Teens have different rules and laws all over the world. According to New Zealand Now, most children
in New Zealand start school on their 5th birthday and all children must be enrolled at school from
their 6th birthday. Another thing that could be different is the technology. In New Zealand, their
technology is not different than here. They have modern TVs, phones, etc. Something that is also the
same is the laws on driving. According to New Zealand Now, you are able to start driving when you
are 16 just like you can in

A Historical Context Of Reinforcement
Part A: Historical Context of Reinforcement
In the behavioral science the term, reinforcement signifies strengthening a behavior. Many learning
theories consist of some form of strengthening or weakening a behavior, in which withholding or
presenting reinforcement may decrease or increase the future occurrence of a behavior (Skinner,
1953). The application of reinforcement varies between theorists and the type of learning implied.
Ivan Pavlov (1928) demonstrated the use of reinforcement was connected between the pairings of an
unconditioned stimulus (UCS) and a conditioned stimulus (CS). Pavlov s experiments consisted of
presenting meat powder, an unconditioned stimulus to a dog and as a result the dog produced
salivation. A bell tone, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His subjects were placed in a puzzle box and Thorndike timed how long it took for the cats to escape.
Throughout the experiment, the cats found a lever that opened the cage door. After their escape,
Thorndike placed the cats back into the cage and after repeated trials the cats learned that pressing the
lever would result in a satisfying consequence. The cats behaviors of opening the lever were
reinforced by the favorable consequence of escape. His work led to the development of instrumental
conditioning, which focuses learning from the consequences of responses. Ten years after his first
study, the notion of response reinforcement was introduced through the Law of Effect , which stated,
responses made to the same situation, those which are accompanied or closely followed by satisfaction
to the animal will, other things being equal, be more firmly connected with the situation, so that, when
it recurs, they will be more likely to recur (Thorndike, 1911, p. 250). Essentially, a response that is
followed by a favorable consequence is likely repeat and a response that is followed by an aversive
consequence will not reoccur.
B.F. Skinner modified Thorndike s law of effect principle into what Skinner (1938) called the term,
operant conditioning, in which through the application of reinforcement, a behavior changes for a
more desire response. Skinner (1948) observed operant conditioning through his experiment

to compete the market. During 2002, with the major competitors Suncor was not doing well, however
once they bought petro Canada over, then they came to the second place in the energy industry. Suncor
has made an improvement through the use of technology to lower the long run costs through
innovation for sustainable energy development. Suncor has started decline with the market, for
pipeline constraints, new entry of energy companies, and by higher costs to produce oil. In order to

As I was reviewing the financial statements of 2013, I have found that, the company has more volatile
industry which makes the investors to buy and sell. Through their improvement globally, their oil

high since the energy sector is more volatile, especially the oil sands of energy sector. Since Suncor
has the lowest prices and operating costs, they will face huge competition within Canada and
internationally. Such risks will affect the auditor s assessment of audit risk for this client. Therefore,

The Use Of Corporal Punishment In Schools
All across the US corporal punishment is being given to students as a method of discipline. Corporal
punishment is infliction of pain as a punishment for an offense. Corporal punishment is legal in 19
states in school and at home That means that the government is allowing students to suffer just so they
can learn a lesson. Corporal punishment does not belong in schools because it can hurt students
emotionally/mentally, it shows students discrimination, and can harm students physically. When a
child is hit by a teacher, it can harm them emotionally short and long term. The use of corporal
punishment in schools can make a child more aggressive, defiant, and oppositional (Dupper, CP in US
Public Schools). By hitting a student, the teacher is thinking they are teaching them a lesson but really
they are setting them up to be more defiant once more and be hit again. It is a vicious cycle that will
never end until the student is damaged for the rest of their life. Teachers hit kids because they think it
will help them out in the long run but really it can lead to a number of different things such as anxiety,
hostility, depression, aggression against authorities, teachers, and property. In the teachers mind they
are preventing this student from acting out again but really they can come back and destroy school
property. Also, the teacher may believe that because they hit this student the student will become a
better person but really it makes them so much worse. Lastly, corporal punishment can affect a student
s self image and weaken their social skills (Rollins, Revisiting the Issue). When a student is hit, they
think less of themselves because they believe that the reason they were hit is because they are lesser
than everyone else. They also could stop making new friends and become socially awkward because
they are afraid that everyone will not be their friend just because others were not nice. Teachers do not
understand the consequences that a student must face when he or she is hit by them. Some people may
say that they can go to therapy and get better but most likely the student will still have permanent
emotional damage. Another reason corporal punishment does not belong in school is because it
teaches

The background. The early 1890s in Japan was a time when the country was experiencing major
growth and economic expansion. The political scene was far from stable. The demise of the Tokugawa

The transformation of the former Samurai class into paragons of civic society was already well
established and the abolition of the four feudal classes emancipated and liberated the nation. The
former Samurai, previously repelled by the thought of handling money or finances (the domain of the

Public Support Rhetorical Analysis
Presidential appeals for public support had become a commonplace in 1992. Some examples of going
public are a special prime time address to the nation, televised press conference, traveling outside

center with network cameras trailing behind.
Richard Nixon, born January 9, 1913 and passed away April 22, 1994, he was the 37th president of the

It is easy to think communicating is simple; however it is usually quite complicated and very easy to
send the wrong message. The two elements in every communication situation are the sender and the
receiver. The sender conveys the idea and the receiver interprets it and usually gives the sender
feedback. Feedback is a powerful tool to communication effectiveness, because it enables the sender
to determine whether or not the receiver correctly interpreted the message. Likewise in this case line
managers haven t been able to express themselves and therefore there hasn t been any feedback
conveyed with the General Manager. A possible cause for this problem is that majority of line
managers employed in India are recent university graduates (World Business Culture, 2012). Now this
is not the problem, the problem is the lack of experience held by these employees compared to the
experience of general managers. And with the way businesses are run in India it is usually a case of
the person with the most experience in the business gets to have the final say (Chakravarty, 2013).
Controlling
The second aspect of management used to investigate the issue is Controlling. Control is a concern

Have you ever wondered whats so important about voting or maybe about who your guardians are or

who you should think our main guardian should be. This helps you become a better guardian because
you are choosing someone who you think is responsible and who will protect the U.S. This will also

When we talk about guardians in class we are asking who we the people are guardians for. So who are
you a guardian for? Everyone should be a guardian of themselves, they should always want whats best
for themselves and what will protect them in the future. We are also guardians for our family and
friends because we don t want anything bad to happen to the people that we love. But most
importantly we are guardians for the future, we are the next generation that once we get to it we will
be voting for the leader of the country, or the laws that we think should get passed. We are the people
that will have an impact on who is in the government and how the government works. That s why its

Joyce Carol Vincent Case Study
On January 25, 2006, the body of a British woman was discovered in an apartment above Wood Green
Shopping City: It was determined that the body, consisting primarily of skeletal remains, was that of
Joyce Carol Vincent (October 15,1965 c. December 2003). According to the coroner, she had died in
December, 2003, which means her body lay undiscovered for nearly three years. How could a
beautiful, vivacious woman who was full of life and reaching for her dreams virtually disappear
without even one person noticing? To solve this case, numerous questions need to be answered: What
caused her death? Why didn t anyone miss her during her three year absence?
The Metropolitan Housing Trust
A United Kingdom housing association, the Metropolitan Housing Trust (aka Metropolitan), owned
the apartment in which Joyce s remains were discovered. Metropolitan provides shelter for a variety of
populations, including those who are victims of abuse. Joyce had become a victim of domestic
violence and, in February 2003, she began to receive housing benefits, which gave her the means to
reside in the Metropolitan housing unit.
January 25, 2006 A Grim Discovery
According to the housing association, benefits continued to cover half of the cost of Joyce s rent for
some time following her death. Initially, the association accepted these partial payments: However,
after several attempts were made to collect the remaining balance, a repossession notice was issued to
reclaim her apartment. It is at

Value of Popular Culture
Function of Popular Culture Although many people believe that popular culture is negatively effecting
our and our children s lives, because it is saturated with meaningless information and dumbing us
down to drones which sit in front of televisions or computers, it is actually a very important aspect of
our lives which allows our society to function more smoothly and easily. Before we get into this we
should first define popular culture. Popular is defined as of, pertaining to, or consisting of the common
people, or the people as a whole as distinguished from any particular class; constituted or carried on
by the people. Culture is defined as the totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs,

Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston Essay
In her short story Sweat , Zora Neale Hurston details the troubled lives of a married African American
couple in the deep south. Born and raised in Florida herself, Huston had an excellent perspective on
the culture of that time and area. She no doubt saw the situations and heard the strong dialect that she
presents in the short story, in which Sykes constantly beats and demeans his wife Delia, who keeps her
retorts minimal as to not provoke him further. Sykes is openly dating another woman, yet Delia takes
no action, instead focusing on her work and religion. Delia retains her indifference when Sykes is in a
dire situation, allowing him to suffer just as she had. Though her actions may seem justified, they
present a major irony when considering her devoutness to religion. Delia s refusal to modify her calm
lifestyle despite Sykes s constant torment reflects her cultural and religious backgrounds and is
influenced by Hurston s own experiences. The culture that Zora Neale Hurston grew up around gave
her insight into the setting and culture that Sweat explores. Born in Eatonville, Florida, Hurston
remembered Eatonville as a place of great peace and happiness (Hemenway 10), though she was not
oblivious to the difficulties surrounding them. In fact, she embraced her place as an African American
woman; Hurston was quoted as saying that she was not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow
dammed up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes (Hemenway 11). Hurston

Biodiesel Fuel
Biodiesel Fuel
The biggest problem the United States faces today when we talk about becoming energy independent
is replacing the gas we use to power our vehicles. When we talk about replacing gasoline as the fuel
we use to power our vehicles, biomass, hydrogen, and fuel cells are the three most talked about
alternatives. Biomass, which is organic material made from plants and animals, contains stored energy
from the sun. Biomass in the form of bio fuels can be used to make the same products as those we
make from fossil fuels. Its main advantages over fossil fuels are that bio fuels are better for the
environment and can be produced right here in the United States. Although some experts complain
that bio fuels release carbon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are very efficient when compared to the combustion engine at twice the efficiency. Fuel cells
also emit no pollution into the atmosphere with co2 and water vapor being it s only by products. They
also come with their disadvantages as well. The main disadvantage of fuel cells is their high initial
costs. Also they must use another fuel source with hydrogen being the most practical to work and we
have already discussed above the problems with hydrogen. In the future experts hope to use methanol
instead of hydrogen to combine with oxygen which is readily available in the air to power fuel cells.
This would be a major breakthrough since methanol is just as easy to transport and distribute as
gasoline. There is no magic bullet solution in getting rid of gasoline as the fuel we use to power our
vehicles just like there is no magic bullet solution for the replacement of oil, natural gas, and nuclear
energy that we use to produce electricity. The one thing our government can do right now to reduce
the amount of gasoline we use is to pass legislation doubling the fuel efficiency of our vehicles which
would cut in half the amount of gasoline we would consume. However with the powerful oil lobby
that has a hold over our politicians this will probably never happen. Although oil is still the easiest and
least expensive way to fuel our economy when compared to all the clean and

Dangerous Minds, By The Name Of Gangsta s Paradise
Introduction
Dangerous Minds, a Hollywood film, is of a strong representation of how urban schools in the heart of
cities tend to deal with violence, disruption etc. on a daily basis. In the beginning of the movie a song
by the name of Gangsta s Paradise was playing while showing scenery of the graffiti walls, poverty
stricken streets, illegal activity along with much more going on in this neighborhood. It is the will
power of Ms. Johnson, former marine, to tech these kids right from wrong and make them feel as if
they can accomplish anything in life as long as they try and work hard to their goals.
The Boys of Baraka begins in a similar manner. Taking place in Baltimore, Maryland, It illustrates the
heart of Baltimore and how rundown and unclean the streets are within this area. It shows kids as
young as 4 years old running through the streets, it shows teenagers are low education dancing in the
streets and acting as fools. Also gives a factual statistic that around 76% of boys in Baltimore don t
graduate. Many of the kids in which attend Dunbar Middle School , which has low graduation rates,
lower class students and leads to a sever disruptive learning environment. To help kids escape areas
such as this, a school in Kenya Africa is opening opportunities for students to get the right education
they need to further success in life away from drugs and violence and the streets.

Of Civil Disobedience In SophoclesAntigone And Martin...
While Antigone and Martin Luther King Jr. both believe a higher good requires them to disobey
specific laws, they carry out civil disobedience in different ways. Dr. King publicly fought for Civil
Rights through nonviolent protests, marches, and speeches, while Antigone opposed the law of her
uncle Kreon and buried her brother, knowing she would be killed. King s Letter from a Birmingham
Jail shows the difference between unjust and just laws and his public administration led to a change in
racial injustice still clear today, while Antigone attempts to show Kreon his unjust ways instead of
saving herself. Although Antigone died for her dedication to family, I sympathize more with Martin
Luther King Jr. because his letter and continuous engagement in civil disobedience led to a change for
the higher good still present in America today.
In Sophocles Antigone, the character Antigone engages in civil disobedience by burying her brother
Polyneices and opposing the law of her uncle Kreon. She openly decides to obey the gods and show
dedication to her family, even if it meant leading to her death (Blondell). Instead of fighting for her
life, Antigone attempts to show Kreon that his law is against the gods and unjust. Throughout the play,
Antigone justifies her decision to bury her brother, despite other s opinions. For example, when
Antigone first decides to defy Kreon s law she states, what I shall suffer will be far less dire than
dying an ignoble death (Blondell 96 97).

How the Claddagh Ring is Used When I began to think about this project I thought about things that I
use all the time. My Claddagh Ring came to mind since it is something that I never take off and is
something that I know many people wear. I also began to think about the reason that I wear the ring. I
thought about why other people wear the ring and the memories attacked to it. I also began to think
about how it is marketed to people. The main points that I found were that the ring is mostly worn by
Irish Americans and seen as a connection to that heritage and is marketed as so, but that there are also
people who do not have and ancestors who are Irish, but wear the ring.
A Claddagh Ring is seen as a symbol of love, friendship and loyalty. The ring originates from the

Political Beliefs Of Alexander Hamilton Vs. Thomas Jefferson
Alexander Hamilton vs. Thomas Jefferson
Democracy is defined as, A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and
exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving
periodically held free elections (Merriam Webster). This means that the basis for American
government is a firm belief in the common people that they have the knowledge and power to choose
leaders to guide the government in the right direction. In the 1790s there was a monumental political
debate over whether the constitution should be ratified and if in needed a bill of rights, and at the
center of the debate was Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. While they both believed
democracy was the best form of government for the new nation, both men had very different ideas
about how to shape the government and its entities. Thomas Jefferson is the better spokesperson a
democratic government because of his political beliefs and inherent belief in human reason, a
conviction that is not held by Alexander Hamilton.
Thomas Jefferson was a enthusiastic supporter of American democracy through his support for the
anti federalist and belief that the citizens had the capacity to choose a leader. Jefferson s party, the anti
federalists, would only endorse the constitution if there was also a bill of rights written. They wanted
to protect civil liberties of the everyday farmer. This proves Jefferson s support of democracy because
he is trying to protect the

and require less work than science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM, majors. In
addition, women are still struggling to gain traction in STEM fields, and face gender bias quite
frequently, as seen in the fact that women are only paid 77 cents for every dollar made by a man. We
hypothesized that STEM majors would be rated as more academically competent than sociology
majors. We also hypothesized that male students would be rated as more academically competent than
female students. Finally, our combined hypothesis was that males would receive higher ratings of
academic competency, overall, regardless of major. There was a total of 263 participants in this
survey, 173 of them being female. Participants read paragraphs about either a sociology major named
James or Jane, or an engineering major named James or Jane, and then were asked to rate how much
they agreed with statements about the student, such as if the student was naturally smart. Participants
were also asked how many hours they expected the student to spend studying a week. We found that
the engineering students were rated higher for being naturally smart than the sociology students.
Additionally, we found that the engineering students were expected to study more hours than the
sociology students, and that a female undergraduate was expected to study more hours than a male
undergraduate. These results

Personal Narrative-An Unlikely Interpretation
An Unlikely Interpretation I believe there is a value in being able to turn an everyday event into a
spectacle that s worth reading into. With that being said, Chills rattled through my bones as the
automatic doors opened before me; I m underdressed. Upon first glance I notice the glint of the
interior lighting reflecting off the marble white tiles. I take note of the scent; Freshness. I think of the
convenience of having these natural grown resources surrounding me. Before now, I would never have
the luxury of purchasing an out of season delicacy at a location so near my residence. Frozen, I was
astonished by the sheer amount of ripe, mossy green avocados that sat in a pine wood container before
me. I muster the courage the to extend my unworthy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I heard what I could only describe as a Jambalaya of abstract conversations in monotonous tones. All I
manage to catch a glimpse of over the towering heads of what I could only describe as a Cult Of
Casual Connoisseurs of Cold Cuts , was an LED Display that represented a number in an order of
people in wait to be helped. I wanted to be helped! In hopes of finding help, I grabbed a ticket out of a
red ticket dispenser; this is what the others were doing in the process of being helped . It felt like an
eternity, filled with the exchanging of uncomfortable stares and the tapping of many feet. I stopped to
look and notice a whole family of Large Knife Men, all grabbing large chunks of dead animal and
slicing them into conveniently thin, sandwich style slices. I became uneasy, glancing over every now
and then at the spinning cylindrical, blindingly silver deli slicers the Men were using. Finally, like a
wounded soldier crawling desperately out of a war trench, My ticket number was called! Naturally I
felt an extreme anxiety meeting the team of Large knife Men that awaited my response, so in an
uncomfortable way, I meandered through the mob of people, out of sight of any

Theme Of Good And Evil In A Separate Peace
As said by Eric Burdon, Inside each of us, there is a seed of good and evil. It s a constant struggle as
to which one will win. And one cannot exist without the other. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles
good and evil are present throughout the book. This quote supports the themes of A Separate Peace
because Gene and Finny struggle with the decision between good and evil and are affected by those
decisions, along with the characters themselves being similar to good and evil.
Gene and Finny are faced with many situations where either good or evil will take over their decision.
When Finny falls of the tree Gene took a step toward him, and then [his] knees bent and [he] jounced
the limb (Knowles 60). Gene purposefully makes Finny fall even if neither of them realizes or accepts
it at first. When Gene makes the decision to cause Finny to fall, he lets evil win. He lets it take him
over to benefit himself in the long run. On the other side of it, when Gene tries to tell Finny that he did
intentionally hurt him he said of course you didn t do it. You damn fool. Sit down, you damn fool
(Knowles 70). Finny does not want to accept the fact that his friend would do such a thing to him. He
pushes out the evil that could have let him lash out at his friend and let the good in him refuse to
believe it. Lastly, when Gene was fighting with Quackenbush all of a sudden Gene hit him hard across
the face (Knowles 790). Gene lets the evil take over him and hit Quackenbush in the

Analysis of Proverbs 31
The Worthy Woman; what a title. Everyone who has some knowledge of the Bible has heard this
phrase. Almost anyone can name some catchy phrase or saying that is from the Bible whether it is
from the Psalms or Proverbs or any other book. We all know those verses that tend to get stuck in our
mind. However catchy they may be, unless one actually comes to an understanding of what is being
said and applies it to their lives, these catchy phrases can just be surface knowledge. Every Christian
can get caught in that trap. When someone is considering a Bible passage they should try to learn
everything they can about that passage; any background information, what certain words mean, who
the author is. The knowledge one can gain from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lemuel s mother asks, An excellent wife who can find? The verses following that question give
descriptions of this most excellent wife that it seems nobody can find. This passage is not just
speaking to women, but to men also. Obviously, Lemuel s mother was talking to him, a man, when
speaking these words. Most people these days see it as a passage of characteristics women should try
to mirror. Not to say that that is not true, but this passage can also be read by men to give them a
picture of what kind of a godly woman they should be searching for. Many of these qualities the
woman possesses would be good for the man to possess too. The English word virtue is what most
Bibles have translated the original word describing this woman into. But, according to Greenstone the
original meaning of the word contains much more meaning. It denotes energy, capacity, and goodness
(333). The first six verses, starting with verse ten, have this overall idea of her home and household
and how she handles the needs of it. She is so good, that her worth is more valuable than rubies (KJV).
Rubies today are expensive, so they had to be much more expensive in the days that this was written.
So, basically she is priceless (v. 10). Verse 11 brings the husband into context stating that he trusts her
so much that he knows he will never lack gain. It does not just say that her husband

Essay Nonverbal Communication of the Breakfast Club
Shane Seemann
The Nonverbal Club
The Breakfast Club is such an interesting movie to use with this topic. The wide range of characters
allows for a variety of different interactions. The way we are going to approach this, is to look at each
character and examine the different interactions between.
Let us first start off with some good examples of Physical Appearances and Artifacts, or the personal
objects we use to announce our identities, interests and backgrounds. Our appearance includes
everything from our body type to our hair style to our skin color to eye color to height. (Orbe amp;
Bruess, 2005) We have five characters, all representing a possible cliques in high school. We have
Andy, the clean cut jock; neat blonde hair, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that he took drugs and a knife to school tells us that he doesn t care about his education or
feel that it is worth his time. Although, Bender giving his sunglasses to Brian really warmed my heart.
It showed that Bender had kind of taken a liking to Brian. Who probably took a lot of confidence from
it as demonstrated by the relaxed and confident demeanor he had after he put them on. Brian thought
that if he could wear glasses like Bender did, that he would become a little more like him. One last
thing about Artifacts, and I hate writing about the end of the movie in the middle of a paper, but when
Allison takes a patch off of Andy s letterman jacket, it warmed my heart a little. Her taking the patch,
meaning that by taking this artifact from him, no matter the social restrictions, they would always
have the bond they created that day.
Now let us discuss Proxemics. Proxemics, or the way we use space to communicate (Orbe amp;
Bruess, 2005) is shown right away in the film, when Andy sits down next to Claire and away from the
other students. Obviously they are more comfortable sitting next to each other because they are closer
in the social pyramid. About a half an hour into the movie, after the scene where the group starts
whistling, it shows another good example of Proxemics. All of the characters are bundled up in the
front area of the class, all except Allison. She is still sitting in the back of the room. This speaks to her
resistance to

Girl On The Train Alcoholism
(Insert catcher) I have finished The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and I read 232 pages. In
addition, I have finished Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan and I read
310 pages. The Girl on the Train is about an alcoholic named Rachel Watson. Rachel falls into the
cycle of alcoholism after she was unable to conceive a child, and when her husband divorced her.
Then one night Rachel blacked out from her alcohol consumption, the same night Megan Hipwell
went missing. Rachel becomes obsessed with Megan s disappearance and goes on a search of her own
to find the culprit. Her suspects include Scott Hipwell, Megan s husband, Kamal Abdic, the man
Megan is having an affair with, and Mac Megan s ex husband and father of Megan s ... Show more

Rachel does everything she can to unlock the truth. Rachel first talks to Megan s husband, and
originally decides that he could not have been the one who killed Megan. She then goes and talks to
Kamal Abdic, the man Megan was having an affair with, but Rachel despite the police reports comes
to believe that he would never have harmed Megan. At this point Rachel is not satisfied and goes and
talks to Scott again, but she finds him intoxicated and he physically abuses her and locks her in a
room, she eventually is released, but by now she thinks Scott is the culprit. That is until she has a
flashback from the night she was drunk and remembers seeing Megan getting into Tom Watson s car,
Rachel s ex husband. I d inserted the image of Anna, walking away from me in her blue dress, into
another scenario: Tom and a woman getting into a car. Because of course that woman wasn t wearing
a blue dress, she was wearing jeans and a red T shirt. She was Megan (Hawkins 272). With this
evidence and the evidence Tom s new wife found, Megan s cell phone. The two put the pieces together
and come to realize that Tom had an affair with Megan Hipwell, and when she did not want to end it
he killed her instead. (Do I need a

Government spending on NASA
Around the nineteen fifties to nineteen the world experienced a drastic change in innovations and
technological development; however, the rate of change has had an iota to no change since then. One
of the most recognizable changes is the computer, computers were developed to process calculations
faster and more accurately to give a country an edge in the space race. Another recognizable change is
the Global Positioning System, GPS, which is used worldwide today. Of course, there has been
countless innovations since then, not to mention discoveries that affect how we view the world. The
government should increase its funding to NASA, to help in the discovery of things that can change
the world forever.

In NASA and the Federal Government Waste Taxpayer Money, Douglas Cobb, a writer for Guardian
liberty Voice, explains how NASA spent millions of taxpayer dollars to maintain more than thirty
underutilized facilities. (Cobb). In other words NASA is using taxpayer money to maintain launch
pads that have not been used since the shuttle program. While this fact is true, there is; however,
several valid reasons for this lapse of use. Even though there are several facilities that have most likely
gone unused since the Apollo program, we have to recall that the federal government tells NASA what
their current mission is, which dictates what facilities are used. An example of this is the rocket test
stand that would have been used for the Constellation program, this program was canceled by Obama
when it was near its completion (Cobb). As such, we can concur that while certain facilities are not
used presently, that they may be used in the future, and thus are not a waste of taxpayer

How do the attitudes and actions of different groups vary towards Global Warming around the world?
Over the years, global warming has gradually become a more renowned and controversial topic, some
say Global warming has been incited by human activity, so humans should take action to slow down
global warming, others say global warming happens naturally so there s no use of stopping it, while
some others don t even know that Global Warming is happening. Many groups of people within
different nations have different opinions of global warming correspondingly having various way of

As another country that is just as endangered, Maldives is famous for its sinking land due to sea levels

millimeters every year around the Maldives. However, the sea levels rising isn t Maldives only
environmental problem, every while or so, there will be a flood caused by storm surges, and a lack of
freshwater due to global warming and climate change; whilst the Maldivian government is trying to
solve the long term problem of sea levels rising they still need to work out their short term problems
such as flooding, pressurizing the government. As one of the first countries to realize the danger of sea
levels rising, the Maldives government has taken a lot of action to slow down global warming. After
the drastic floods of 1987, the president of Maldives Gayoom has built a wall around Male (the capital
city of Maldives) which has decreases the vulnerability of the city, yet as the population increases, the

Sacrifice In The Kite Runner
Sacrifice (and issues related to it) have been an inherent part of literature from the beginning. The
intense connection between destruction and creation raises questions about the human capability for
violence and love in equal measure and seemingly violates the natural human instinct for survival.
This has solidified its place as an object of fascination and scrutiny for generations. Sacrifice is not
simply a matter of giving up one s life or something equal to it for someone else; oftentimes,
psychological motivations behind sacrifice are very complex. However, in works such as The Kite
Runner, The Color Purple, Cyrano de Bergerac, Saving Private Ryan, The Nightingale and the Rose ,
and I d Give Up My Life For You , the motivations behind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although he is a sensitive and bookish young boy, instances of a mean streak appear throughout the
book. He often takes advantage of Hassan s love for him and uses it to pressure him into committing
acts such as firing walnuts with his slingshot at the neighbor s one eyed German shepherd (4). In one
instance, he goes so far as to tease Hassan into admitting that he would eat dirt if he told him to, and to
confess that he finds teasing him to be something fascinating albeit in a sick way (54), though he
knows it to be cruel. His occasional antagonism towards Hassan stems in part from his jealousy and
his own feelings of inadequacy in regards to the love of his father. Hassan possesses an innate courage
and sense of justice and natural athletic abilities, all traits that Amir lacks and that Baba admires. The
fact that Amir does not stack up to Hassan in the eyes of their father becomes clear during a
conversation that he overhears between Baba and Rahim Khan. Not only does his father not
understand his inclination to spend his days reading and writing, he also looks down upon Amir s
inability to stand up both for his own self and for others and tendency to let Hassan fight his battles for
him. He states unequivocally that A boy who won t stand up for himself becomes a man who can t
stand up to anything (22). This leads to Amir s heightened jealousy of Hassan, general feeling of
inadequacy, and an

  • 2. Utilitarianism, By John Stuart Mill Utilitarianism is a doctrine in normative ethics that is outlined and defended by many philosophers, including the English philosopher John Stuart Mill as a standard to determine what are right and wrong actions. At its most basic claim, the right course of action one must take should be in the interest of maximizing what is known as utility. The right course of action is determined as being right if it maximizes the total benefit and happiness gained, while at the same time reducing the greatest amount of pain for the greatest number of people. To put it simply, utilitarianism merits the greatest good for the greatest number. In Utilitarianism, John Stuart Mill details his explanation and support of the theory, and provides common criticisms of the theory that he refutes throughout the piece. A couple of these critiques include claims that the concept of utility is opposed to the concept of pleasure, and that it renders men cold and unsympathizing (p. 20). With conviction, Mill is able to successfully vindicate and define utilitarianism from critiques, although he could go beyond defining by providing examples and illustrations of utilitarianism in the way that critiques perceive it to be in order to demonstrate faults and holes that would arise. The principle of utility is a concept that was primarily introduced academically by philosopher Jeremy Bentham and later confounded upon to become what is known as the Greatest Happiness Principle. Bentham focuses on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Self awareness strategies that I followed to understand myself more was that I took the time to ask people I know to provide feedback about myself, spot my emotions in films, and know who and what pushes my buttons. Although there are many other strategies, these were just several that helped see who I am. My social awareness has improved where I can read people and tell a certain situation did not go well. • 4. Fara Alternate Ending Fara cracked one eye, and was blinded momentarily by white light. When her vision cleared and adjusted, she opened the other and viewed her surroundings. She was in a hallway, just along a baby blue wall; nurses and doctors with stethoscopes around their necks hurried about, ignoring them. Leaning up, she looked for Xhaiden, and was relieved to see him in a stretcher just in front of her. Their backpacks were at their feet, untouched. His wounds were cleaned up, but blood still found a way through his abraded skin. She observed her own hands, touching her forehead. Her own injuries were the same as that of his. Puzzled, she asked the nearest nurse a simple question concerning them, who was a tall woman with long, blonde hair fixed into a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She found ink pens to be more resourceful than her knife; and besides, they would need another thing to protect themselves with, in case the knife had been taken from them or went missing. She sped to the dry food, taking as much as she could that would fit in their backpacks, along with four water bottles. Nearly dropping the groceries, she shuffled to the checkout counter, dropping them clumsily on the smooth conveyor belt. The cashier, a young teen, appeared exhausted. She looked longingly at a clock above the entrance, which read 3:14. Fara was shocked at the time, but relieved somewhat; they could use the rest of the night to catch up on the sleep that they desperately needed, much more than food, water, and pens. The working teenager swiped the supplies over a scanner, and she reached into her backpack pocket to take out the money. The cash register rang up a total of forty seven and three eighths keys; Fara begrudgingly complied to pay the amount of exchange. The cashier packed her things neatly into a plastic bag, and she handed it to her without saying a word. She calmly walked out of the store, and strode to Xhaiden, who was clutching the gauze, and immediately took his hand off when he saw her, embarrassed. Thank you, he said ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A chemical change is a change that alters the identity of a substance. A chemical change can be identified by five things: change in mass, formation of a precipitate, release of heat and/or light, color change, or giving off gas. Physical changes occurred in four out of the eight experiments completed in this lab. The first was experiment one, the salt and water. The salt was added to water but when the water evaporated the salt remained. The water changed to the vapor form of water and the salt did not change. The second was experiment two, the candle. When the candle was lit the heat given off from the fire melted the wax beneath it. Melting is a physical change because the liquid wax is still wax, its usual form is just a solid. Experiment four dealt with ripping paper. This was a physical change because, although the paper was being ripped apart, it was (and still is) paper. The smaller pieces did not change the mass or any other factor of it except the surface area of each piece. Experiment seven dealt with vinegar being added to milk. The vinegar did not change but the milk was curdled by the vinegar. Although the milk was curdled, the milk remained milk. The composition stayed the same. Each of these experiments showed no change in a substance so as it changed to another substance. Chemical changes occurred in five out of the eight experiments completed in this lab. • 6. Hurricane Mitch Effects Introduction Natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, seaquakes, and volcanic eruptions are all events that frequent the country of Nicaragua and its neighbors in Central America and the Caribbean. But one of the most devastating natural disasters to affect the country, Hurricane Mitch, has had a lasting effect on Nicaragua. There was an approximate of 3,000 deaths, 1,000 missing persons, 900,000 injured persons. The hurricane caused damage to 50,000 homes, 340 schools, 90 health care centers, 40 health posts and 6 hospitals across the country (Christopolos, et al, 2010). This paper will examine the conditions of Nicaragua before and after Hurricane Mitch and answer the question, what man made factors played a role in the severe devastation of the country? First, the paper will discuss the major hazardous natural events that occurred in the wake of Hurricane Mitch and their effect on the country. Then the effect of human influence in geography, politics and social structure will be analyzed. Finally, the paper dissect the socio economic effect Hurricane Mitch had on the country of Nicaragua. Hazardous Natural Event Though Hurricane Mitch never made direct landfall, the 50 inches of rain it brought, led to lasting damage for the country of Nicaragua. They are rarely seen for their intelligence or for their accomplishments excluding their overcoming disability hardships. The textbook, Everything s an Argument, contains an excerpt from Charles A. Riley II s book Disability and the Media: Prescriptions for Change. Riley, a journalism professor at New York s Baruch College, uses appeal to ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade his audience that their methods of portraying disabled people are in dire need of change. He uses such diction as allegorical and hagiographer, as well as providing the definitions or backgrounds of certain terms along the borders of the text. Using such words and providing their definitions gives the reader a sense of feeling that what they are reading is important. This helps make his argument effective because the reader will acknowledge the authors good sense of vocabulary and that alone will show he is even more credible. The author uses this as an appeal to ethos because he is gaining credibility from his use of diction. One of the appeals that make Riley s argument very effective is his appeal to pathos. He compares his appeal to how a person with a disability is displayed as a poster child in exchange for sympathy and donations, bringing her financial rewards of sponsorships, motivational speaking gigs, and modeling contracts at the expense of being turned into a latter day poster child (642). This effectively supports Riley s claim because the audience will now feel sympathetic for the disabled portrayed in the media as someone needing assistance or a sponsor. Another example is when he attempts to determine how much the media is demeaning disabled people as a group, It is impossible to know the full degree of damage wreaked by the demeaning and wildly inaccurate portrayal of people with disabilities, nor is it altogether clear whether much current progress is ... By being a successful waitress I am not only getting excellent tips, but I am also making my customers remember my service. I enjoy the time I spend talking with my customers and taking care of them. I meet a lot of interesting people since I have started working at the restaurant. In order to become a successful waitress, a waitress has to take good care of her customers and be aware of what is happening in her surroundings. First of all, when I notice that I have customers sitting in my section, I finish my other chores quickly and walk to my table. Once I am there, I give them a friendly greeting and ask How are you guys doing today? so we can have some small talk. This action shows most of my customers that I care and have interest in them. Of course, everything has exceptions. Some customers do not like it if their server speaks too much, because they want to enjoy the peaceful and quiet environment. Therefore, I will take their drink orders and carefully remember any of their special requests. For example, drink without ice, drink with extra ice, sweet tea without lemon, etc. I promptly go to the kitchen to make their drink orders and bring them out as soon as possible. After I deliver their drinks, I ask them if they would like to start with some appetizers. If they do order appetizers, I let the chief know as quickly as possible. ... The tendency to gravitate to similar individuals when building social ties is a well known feature of human behaviour, and is referred to as homophily (McPherson et al., 2001). It is possible that the tendency for homophily within populations, particularly the perception of physical similarity, influences seating preference more frequently than expected by chance in day to day social interactions (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011). Many learning theories consist of some form of strengthening or weakening a behavior, in which withholding or presenting reinforcement may decrease or increase the future occurrence of a behavior (Skinner, 1953). The application of reinforcement varies between theorists and the type of learning implied. Ivan Pavlov (1928) demonstrated the use of reinforcement was connected between the pairings of an unconditioned stimulus (UCS) and a conditioned stimulus (CS). His subjects were placed in a puzzle box and Thorndike timed how long it took for the cats to escape. Throughout the experiment, the cats found a lever that opened the cage door. After their escape, Thorndike placed the cats back into the cage and after repeated trials the cats learned that pressing the lever would result in a satisfying consequence. The cats behaviors of opening the lever were reinforced by the favorable consequence of escape. His work led to the development of instrumental conditioning, which focuses learning from the consequences of responses. Ten years after his first study, the notion of response reinforcement was introduced through the Law of Effect , which stated, responses made to the same situation, those which are accompanied or closely followed by satisfaction to the animal will, other things being equal, be more firmly connected with the situation, so that, when it recurs, they will be more likely to recur (Thorndike, 1911, p. 250). Essentially, a response that is followed by a favorable consequence is likely repeat and a response that is followed by an aversive consequence will not reoccur. B.F. Skinner modified Thorndike s law of effect principle into what Skinner (1938) called the term, operant conditioning, in which through the application of reinforcement, a behavior changes for a more desire response. • 19. The Use Of Corporal Punishment In Schools All across the US corporal punishment is being given to students as a method of discipline. Corporal punishment is infliction of pain as a punishment for an offense. Corporal punishment is legal in 19 states in school and at home That means that the government is allowing students to suffer just so they can learn a lesson. Corporal punishment does not belong in schools because it can hurt students emotionally/mentally, it shows students discrimination, and can harm students physically. When a child is hit by a teacher, it can harm them emotionally short and long term. The use of corporal punishment in schools can make a child more aggressive, defiant, and oppositional (Dupper, CP in US Public Schools). By hitting a student, the teacher is thinking they are teaching them a lesson but really they are setting them up to be more defiant once more and be hit again. It is a vicious cycle that will never end until the student is damaged for the rest of their life. Teachers hit kids because they think it will help them out in the long run but really it can lead to a number of different things such as anxiety, hostility, depression, aggression against authorities, teachers, and property. In the teachers mind they are preventing this student from acting out again but really they can come back and destroy school property. Also, the teacher may believe that because they hit this student the student will become a better person but really it makes them so much worse. Lastly, corporal punishment can affect a student s self image and weaken their social skills (Rollins, Revisiting the Issue). When a student is hit, they think less of themselves because they believe that the reason they were hit is because they are lesser than everyone else. They also could stop making new friends and become socially awkward because they are afraid that everyone will not be their friend just because others were not nice. Teachers do not understand the consequences that a student must face when he or she is hit by them. Some people may say that they can go to therapy and get better but most likely the student will still have permanent emotional damage. The two elements in every communication situation are the sender and the receiver. The sender conveys the idea and the receiver interprets it and usually gives the sender feedback. Feedback is a powerful tool to communication effectiveness, because it enables the sender to determine whether or not the receiver correctly interpreted the message. Likewise in this case line managers haven t been able to express themselves and therefore there hasn t been any feedback conveyed with the General Manager. A possible cause for this problem is that majority of line managers employed in India are recent university graduates (World Business Culture, 2012). • 29. Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston Essay In her short story Sweat , Zora Neale Hurston details the troubled lives of a married African American couple in the deep south. Born and raised in Florida herself, Huston had an excellent perspective on the culture of that time and area. She no doubt saw the situations and heard the strong dialect that she presents in the short story, in which Sykes constantly beats and demeans his wife Delia, who keeps her retorts minimal as to not provoke him further. Sykes is openly dating another woman, yet Delia takes no action, instead focusing on her work and religion. Delia retains her indifference when Sykes is in a dire situation, allowing him to suffer just as she had. Though her actions may seem justified, they present a major irony when considering her devoutness to religion. Delia s refusal to modify her calm lifestyle despite Sykes s constant torment reflects her cultural and religious backgrounds and is influenced by Hurston s own experiences. The culture that Zora Neale Hurston grew up around gave her insight into the setting and culture that Sweat explores. Born in Eatonville, Florida, Hurston remembered Eatonville as a place of great peace and happiness (Hemenway 10), though she was not oblivious to the difficulties surrounding them. In fact, she embraced her place as an African American woman; Hurston was quoted as saying that she was not tragically colored. When we talk about replacing gasoline as the fuel we use to power our vehicles, biomass, hydrogen, and fuel cells are the three most talked about alternatives. Biomass, which is organic material made from plants and animals, contains stored energy from the sun. Biomass in the form of bio fuels can be used to make the same products as those we make from fossil fuels. Its main advantages over fossil fuels are that bio fuels are better for the environment and can be produced right here in the United States. Fuel cells also emit no pollution into the atmosphere with co2 and water vapor being it s only by products. They also come with their disadvantages as well. The main disadvantage of fuel cells is their high initial costs. Also they must use another fuel source with hydrogen being the most practical to work and we have already discussed above the problems with hydrogen. In the future experts hope to use methanol instead of hydrogen to combine with oxygen which is readily available in the air to power fuel cells. This would be a major breakthrough since methanol is just as easy to transport and distribute as gasoline. There is no magic bullet solution in getting rid of gasoline as the fuel we use to power our vehicles just like there is no magic bullet solution for the replacement of oil, natural gas, and nuclear energy that we use to produce electricity. The one thing our government can do right now to reduce the amount of gasoline we use is to pass legislation doubling the fuel efficiency of our vehicles which would cut in half the amount of gasoline we would consume. However with the powerful oil lobby that has a hold over our politicians this will probably never happen. • 33. Of Civil Disobedience In SophoclesAntigone And Martin... While Antigone and Martin Luther King Jr. both believe a higher good requires them to disobey specific laws, they carry out civil disobedience in different ways. Dr. King publicly fought for Civil Rights through nonviolent protests, marches, and speeches, while Antigone opposed the law of her uncle Kreon and buried her brother, knowing she would be killed. King s Letter from a Birmingham Jail shows the difference between unjust and just laws and his public administration led to a change in racial injustice still clear today, while Antigone attempts to show Kreon his unjust ways instead of saving herself. Although Antigone died for her dedication to family, I sympathize more with Martin Luther King Jr. because his letter and continuous engagement in civil disobedience led to a change for the higher good still present in America today. In Sophocles Antigone, the character Antigone engages in civil disobedience by burying her brother Polyneices and opposing the law of her uncle Kreon. She openly decides to obey the gods and show dedication to her family, even if it meant leading to her death (Blondell). Instead of fighting for her life, Antigone attempts to show Kreon that his law is against the gods and unjust. Throughout the play, Antigone justifies her decision to bury her brother, despite other s opinions. Thomas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton vs. Thomas Jefferson Democracy is defined as, A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections (Merriam Webster). This means that the basis for American government is a firm belief in the common people that they have the knowledge and power to choose leaders to guide the government in the right direction. In the 1790s there was a monumental political debate over whether the constitution should be ratified and if in needed a bill of rights, and at the center of the debate was Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. While they both believed democracy was the best form of government for the new nation, both men had very different ideas about how to shape the government and its entities. Thomas Jefferson is the better spokesperson a democratic government because of his political beliefs and inherent belief in human reason, a conviction that is not held by Alexander Hamilton. In addition, women are still struggling to gain traction in STEM fields, and face gender bias quite frequently, as seen in the fact that women are only paid 77 cents for every dollar made by a man. We also hypothesized that male students would be rated as more academically competent than female students. Finally, our combined hypothesis was that males would receive higher ratings of academic competency, overall, regardless of major. There was a total of 263 participants in this survey, 173 of them being female. Participants read paragraphs about either a sociology major named James or Jane, or an engineering major named James or Jane, and then were asked to rate how much they agreed with statements about the student, such as if the student was naturally smart. Participants were also asked how many hours they expected the student to spend studying a week. We found that the engineering students were rated higher for being naturally smart than the sociology students. Additionally, we found that the engineering students were expected to study more hours than the sociology students, and that a female undergraduate was expected to study more hours than a male undergraduate. • 42. Personal Narrative-An Unlikely Interpretation An Unlikely Interpretation I believe there is a value in being able to turn an everyday event into a spectacle that s worth reading into. With that being said, Chills rattled through my bones as the automatic doors opened before me; I m underdressed. Upon first glance I notice the glint of the interior lighting reflecting off the marble white tiles. I take note of the scent; Freshness. I think of the convenience of having these natural grown resources surrounding me. Before now, I would never have the luxury of purchasing an out of season delicacy at a location so near my residence. Frozen, I was astonished by the sheer amount of ripe, mossy green avocados that sat in a pine wood container before me. I muster the courage the to extend my unworthy ... All I manage to catch a glimpse of over the towering heads of what I could only describe as a Cult Of Casual Connoisseurs of Cold Cuts , was an LED Display that represented a number in an order of people in wait to be helped. I wanted to be helped! In hopes of finding help, I grabbed a ticket out of a red ticket dispenser; this is what the others were doing in the process of being helped . It felt like an eternity, filled with the exchanging of uncomfortable stares and the tapping of many feet. I stopped to look and notice a whole family of Large Knife Men, all grabbing large chunks of dead animal and slicing them into conveniently thin, sandwich style slices. I became uneasy, glancing over every now and then at the spinning cylindrical, blindingly silver deli slicers the Men were using. Finally, like a wounded soldier crawling desperately out of a war trench, My ticket number was called! Naturally I felt an extreme anxiety meeting the team of Large knife Men that awaited my response, so in an uncomfortable way, I meandered through the mob of people, out of sight of any ... • 43. Theme Of Good And Evil In A Separate Peace As said by Eric Burdon, Inside each of us, there is a seed of good and evil. It s a constant struggle as to which one will win. And one cannot exist without the other. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles good and evil are present throughout the book. This quote supports the themes of A Separate Peace because Gene and Finny struggle with the decision between good and evil and are affected by those decisions, along with the characters themselves being similar to good and evil. Gene and Finny are faced with many situations where either good or evil will take over their decision. When Finny falls of the tree Gene took a step toward him, and then [his] knees bent and [he] jounced the limb (Knowles 60). Gene purposefully makes Finny fall even if neither of them realizes or accepts it at first. When Gene makes the decision to cause Finny to fall, he lets evil win. He lets it take him over to benefit himself in the long run. On the other side of it, when Gene tries to tell Finny that he did intentionally hurt him he said of course you didn t do it. You damn fool. Sit down, you damn fool (Knowles 70). Finny does not want to accept the fact that his friend would do such a thing to him. He pushes out the evil that could have let him lash out at his friend and let the good in him refuse to believe it. Lastly, when Gene was fighting with Quackenbush all of a sudden Gene hit him hard across the face (Knowles 790). Gene lets the evil take over him and hit Quackenbush in the ... • 44. Analysis of Proverbs 31 The Worthy Woman; what a title. Everyone who has some knowledge of the Bible has heard this phrase. Almost anyone can name some catchy phrase or saying that is from the Bible whether it is from the Psalms or Proverbs or any other book. We all know those verses that tend to get stuck in our mind. However catchy they may be, unless one actually comes to an understanding of what is being said and applies it to their lives, these catchy phrases can just be surface knowledge. Every Christian can get caught in that trap. When someone is considering a Bible passage they should try to learn everything they can about that passage; any background information, what certain words mean, who the author is. The verses following that question give descriptions of this most excellent wife that it seems nobody can find. This passage is not just speaking to women, but to men also. Obviously, Lemuel s mother was talking to him, a man, when speaking these words. Most people these days see it as a passage of characteristics women should try to mirror. Not to say that that is not true, but this passage can also be read by men to give them a picture of what kind of a godly woman they should be searching for. Many of these qualities the woman possesses would be good for the man to possess too. The English word virtue is what most Bibles have translated the original word describing this woman into. But, according to Greenstone the original meaning of the word contains much more meaning. It denotes energy, capacity, and goodness (333). The first six verses, starting with verse ten, have this overall idea of her home and household and how she handles the needs of it. She is so good, that her worth is more valuable than rubies (KJV). Rubies today are expensive, so they had to be much more expensive in the days that this was written. So, basically she is priceless (v. 10). Verse 11 brings the husband into context stating that he trusts her so much that he knows he will never lack gain. It does not just say that her husband ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The wide range of characters allows for a variety of different interactions. The way we are going to approach this, is to look at each character and examine the different interactions between. Let us first start off with some good examples of Physical Appearances and Artifacts, or the personal objects we use to announce our identities, interests and backgrounds. Our appearance includes everything from our body type to our hair style to our skin color to eye color to height. The fact that he took drugs and a knife to school tells us that he doesn t care about his education or feel that it is worth his time. Although, Bender giving his sunglasses to Brian really warmed my heart. It showed that Bender had kind of taken a liking to Brian. Who probably took a lot of confidence from it as demonstrated by the relaxed and confident demeanor he had after he put them on. Brian thought that if he could wear glasses like Bender did, that he would become a little more like him. One last thing about Artifacts, and I hate writing about the end of the movie in the middle of a paper, but when Allison takes a patch off of Andy s letterman jacket, it warmed my heart a little. Her taking the patch, meaning that by taking this artifact from him, no matter the social restrictions, they would always have the bond they created that day. Now let us discuss Proxemics. Proxemics, or the way we use space to communicate (Orbe amp; Bruess, 2005) is shown right away in the film, when Andy sits down next to Claire and away from the other students. Obviously they are more comfortable sitting next to each other because they are closer in the social pyramid. About a half an hour into the movie, after the scene where the group starts whistling, it shows another good example of Proxemics. All of the characters are bundled up in the front area of the class, all except Allison. She is still sitting in the back of the room. This speaks to her resistance to ... That is until she has a flashback from the night she was drunk and remembers seeing Megan getting into Tom Watson s car, Rachel s ex husband. NASA Government spending on NASA Around the nineteen fifties to nineteen the world experienced a drastic change in innovations and technological development; however, the rate of change has had an iota to no change since then. One of the most recognizable changes is the computer, computers were developed to process calculations faster and more accurately to give a country an edge in the space race. Another recognizable change is the Global Positioning System, GPS, which is used worldwide today. Of course, there has been countless innovations since then, not to mention discoveries that affect how we view the world. While this fact is true, there is; however, several valid reasons for this lapse of use. Even though there are several facilities that have most likely gone unused since the Apollo program, we have to recall that the federal government tells NASA what their current mission is, which dictates what facilities are used. An example of this is the rocket test stand that would have been used for the Constellation program, this program was canceled by Obama when it was near its completion (Cobb). As such, we can concur that while certain facilities are not used presently, that they may be used in the future, and thus are not a waste of taxpayer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Sacrifice In The Kite Runner Sacrifice (and issues related to it) have been an inherent part of literature from the beginning. The intense connection between destruction and creation raises questions about the human capability for violence and love in equal measure and seemingly violates the natural human instinct for survival. This has solidified its place as an object of fascination and scrutiny for generations. Sacrifice is not simply a matter of giving up one s life or something equal to it for someone else; oftentimes, psychological motivations behind sacrifice are very complex. However, in works such as The Kite Runner, The Color Purple, Cyrano de Bergerac, Saving Private Ryan, The Nightingale and the Rose , and I d Give Up My Life For You , the motivations behind ... He often takes advantage of Hassan s love for him and uses it to pressure him into committing acts such as firing walnuts with his slingshot at the neighbor s one eyed German shepherd (4). In one instance, he goes so far as to tease Hassan into admitting that he would eat dirt if he told him to, and to confess that he finds teasing him to be something fascinating albeit in a sick way (54), though he knows it to be cruel. His occasional antagonism towards Hassan stems in part from his jealousy and his own feelings of inadequacy in regards to the love of his father. Hassan possesses an innate courage and sense of justice and natural athletic abilities, all traits that Amir lacks and that Baba admires. The fact that Amir does not stack up to Hassan in the eyes of their father becomes clear during a conversation that he overhears between Baba and Rahim Khan. Not only does his father not understand his inclination to spend his days reading and writing, he also looks down upon Amir s inability to stand up both for his own self and for others and tendency to let Hassan fight his battles for him. He states unequivocally that A boy who won t stand up for himself becomes a man who can t stand up to anything (22).
