Robinson Crusoe Thesis Statement
My diploma thesis is about the Main Themes in Daniel Defoe s Robinson Crusoe novel. This novel is
an autobiographical narrative novel which the author names Robinson Crusoe .Novel firstly was
named The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, but then was
changed into Robinson Crusoe .It was published with this title with the intention to look more like the
life of a sailor, not of the author itself.
The novel represents the amalgamation of middle class and aristocratic society. It represents the
spiritual progress which is revealed during the activities that he has on the island. The experiences that
he has made him realize the connection between him and the divine belief.
The love and affection that Robinson has for nature and the sea are one of the most captivated loves
that he feels during his life. In the beginning of the novel, Defoe s writes about his family opinions
towards him, and how unhappy they were about Robinson s life ... Show more content on

I took into consideration that information from different sources are very important in order to
complete my thesis in the was that I intended to. Firstly I read the book in Albanian, in order to have
clear opinions about the book and then I read it in English. After completing the reading I started
doing a lot of researchers on the internet, where I found a lot of books which were written about
Robinson Crusoe. I have read different essays, books, newspapers, and critical thoughts from different
authors which I found very helpful in order to construct thoughts of my own about the novel. Among
them are Christopher Borsing Daniel Defoe and the Representation of Personal Identity , John Richetii

Social Causes Of The French Revolution
The French Revolution was an event that would rattle France s Bourbon monarchy and their
neighboring royal families of Europe. Stemming from multiple causes such as the lack of food and
other necessities, a growing social inequality in the face of the Enlightenment, and economic decline,
the French Revolution bred dissent, notably among the masses in Paris. At the height on the
Revolution, it became as much of a crusade against their fellow countrymen as it was against their
outside enemies. After seizing power, political factions consistently accused each other of working
against the Revolution, and royalist insurrections fueled the disarray.
Leading up to Revolution itself was the growing social inequality. With the centralization of the
French state due to the efforts of French kings such as Louis XIV, French common citizens found
themselves subjected to the will of a nobility that became increasingly hostile to any sort of
concessions. Many families were struggling to make ends meet while seeing those at the top of society
turn a blind eye. Warfare contributed to this as well, notably the Seven Years War in which France lost
much of it s New World territory and the American War of Independence after which the French came
away with little spoils, not nearly enough to make up for the money spent on the war. With their
country on the verge of economic collapse, French prices soared, forcing French commoners into an
increasingly small box. Faced with an increasing

Summary Of The Plastic Pink Flamingo
Established magazine writer Jennifer Price s essay, The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History ,
argues that America s culture is excessively concerned with material items, and much less concerned
with individuality. Price addresses her opinion of American culture through syntax, diction, and tone.
Price conveys her opinion of American culture through her use of syntax. In the second paragraph,
Price discusses America s past according to flamingos, crafting her sentence using exceptional syntax
to reveal her true feelings towards the United States. It is said that Americans hunted and killed
flamingos to make use of their plumes and meat. She achieves her goal through the fragment
following the previous statement, But no matter. (Line

Linux Security
Robert Hoffman
Linux
Research 2.1
Security for computers is one of the most important aspects of a system that has to be in place.
For this paper I will be writing about four security features that Linux systems use; these are SELinux,
chroot jail, openSSH, and iptables. I will briefly describe what they do to provide security.
SELinux (security enhanced Linux) was developed by the NSA, who chose Linux as its
operating system to create a more secure operating system. Since the development of SELinux by the
NSA most Linux distributions now implement SELinux as a standard. Traditional Linux systems use a
security called (DAC) discretionary access control. With this approach users and their objects, i.e.,

Setting iptables is highly beneficial to your system, along with a main firewall iptables allows for a
more secure system based on parameters you set in the iptables.
OpenSSH is a set of programs that provide encrypted communication between networks. Created by
the openBSD team as an alternative to the original SSH software. When it starts there are two tasks
that it performs right away, first it establishes an encrypted connection, second it authenticates the
user. When these two tasks are complete two systems can securely send information back and forth.
When the session is started openSSH encrypts anything sent out on the network, this prevents many
security risks from being exploited. Two key pairs are used to enable an encrypted connection; a host
key pair and a session key pair. The host key pair is established when the system forst boots and
consists of public and private keys. The session key pair also consists of a public and private key and
these change hourly. When a client first connects with a server you are asked to verify that the server
you are wanting to connect to is the right one. Once verification is complete the client make a copy of
the servers public host key so the next time the client wants to connect to that server it will have a
copy of the key to verify the server with.

Importance of Thinking in Troilus and Criseyde and Hamlet...
Importance of Thinking in Troilus and Criseyde and Hamlet
Troilus and Hamlet have much in common. Both have represented the quintessential tragic heroes of
two literary periods. Both lovers, Troilus and Hamlet lose what they love despite their earth shaking
groans. Both are surrounded by traitors and are traitorous in kind. Both are embattled and this is no
secret both die. But somewhere on that mortal coil on which they are both strung, they confront a
similar question, a question which divides them in no sense less than the waters divide England and
Denmark the question of action. This essay pretends to do little more than probe the circumstances of
that question in relation to a speech that appears prominently in Shakespeare s ... Show more content

Now, Hamlet comprehends the arbitrary nature of power that would send an army against a minuscule
plot of ground. He understands good and evil and the machiavellian wheels that grease the way to the
throne as they are, a process in which he is complicit. Hamlet, a once simple prince, is sick at heart.
An inextricable belief in fate centers this bitter epistemological com ëment. In Hamlet s world, birth
alone is a telling reason and excuse for tainted character (1.4.24 26, 1.5.91). But heaven takes part as
well; there s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow (5.2.230 231). Taken together, this realization
of inequity and the apparently long understood mechanism of biological predestination, are staggering
to Horatio s sweet prince. If such biological predestination is true, then how should Hamlet understand
the base actions of his family members and of himself? Either his family are impostors to nobility or
this idea of predestination is faulty. The play gives ample evidence of a prince who has long dallied in
philosophy and seldom lived in the world. Indeed, the transparent nonsense that a person may not
exceed his birth is indicative of this. Like Joyce s Stephen Dedalus, Hamlet glamorizes death through
his sable clothes. Claudius?and Gertrude s advice is honest, sincere, and worldly: death is the most
commonplace of occurrences: accept it and nmove on. When the murder is revealed, progression

Essay On My Love Of Literature
As a child, I enjoyed literature. I was fascinated by the bright illustrations and flamboyant texts that
accompanied these simple stories which always involved a lively ending and a central theme. I read in
order to find enjoyment through the ludicrous adventures of the children s story protagonists. As I
progressed through grade school, the style and my association with literature began to drastically
change.I was told that these books would broaden my knowledge, enrich my vocabulary and
strengthen my writing skills. Perhaps this is true, but I could not help feeling that reading had now
become homework (a forced assignment) and it not help these books lacked the charm which the ones
of my childhood possessed. I now dislike the concept of literature because books I now read lack the
virtues which I enjoyed in children s books and are read only because they are a requirement of my
education. The first reason why I now dislike the concept of literature is because books I now read
lack the virtues which I enjoyed in children s books. First, the books I once read like Eric Carle and
Geronimo Stilton contained vivid illustrations, flamboyant texts, and playful adventures. I remember
In Kindergarten during story time, my teacher would enthusiastically read the works of Eric Carle,
holding the book in way that the whole class could see the illustrations. I was astonished when the

Images of Love in Chaucer s Troilus and Criseyde Essay...
Images of Love in Chaucer s Troilus and Criseyde
The image of love created by Chaucer in Book I of Troilus and Criseyde is one which elicits pity
rather than admiration. Yet, the poet professes to serve and celebrate the God of Love. Is the
superficially motivated but all consuming passion sparked in Troilus meant to serve as a warning to
other lovers or a model? With the presence of several narrative interjections by the poet himself
suggesting a method of interpretation, clearly some emphasis is placed upon an audience s ability to
learn from The double sorwe of Troilus (1). As a cautionary tale, though, perhaps Chaucer attempts to
describe the paradoxes seemingly inseparable from the very concept of love itself, rather ... Show

...every other charge he set at nought (444). Ironically, Troilus, who once mocked other lovers, falls
victim to (is humbled by) the curse or illness of love. Like the other classical and legendary examples
Chaucer provides in Phebus Apollo and Paris, the love which plagues Troilus is described as a
compulsion, a force which is virtually impossible to resist. Troilus often uses the word burning to
describe his passion, likening his love to a fire which, once sparked, will rage out of his control. The
anguish from this unrequited but constant fire brings Troilus to contemplate and even wish for death
as a release. Though Pandarus offers his advice and promises Troilus a happy resolution, the seeds of
the tragedy to come seem to be sewn into this self destructive notion of love.
Rather than presenting love as a unified concept or code of behavior to be imitated, Chaucer
understands well that love is capable of housing contradictory, even radically opposed, ideas. For
thilke grownd that bereth weeds wikke/ Bereth eh thise holsom herbes... (946 7). Perhaps it is a sense
of this underlying paradox which Chaucer hopes to convey to his audience. Perhaps, further, he hopes
to suggest that the social conventions surrounding love in his era help to create the dangerous form of
love seen in Troilus. Questions, though not necessarily these ones, are encouraged by the poem itself.

Political Campaign Comparison
When looking at these images I think of the original piece that these works are a reference to. For the
Obama hope poster I am reminded of the political campaign of him running and the photograph the
poster referenced. In the second and third poster I am reminded of the first poster as these are a parody
of sorts of it. The second poster has a portrait of the Joker from the batman series. The third is a
reference to Bill Clinton s sex scandal. The artist uses art appropriation to use an image that the
audience already knows. Since the audience is already familiar with parts of the image it becomes sort
of a parody. The audience can look at the piece and form their own judgements based on what they
think about these events. For example a person who was not a fan of Obama during his political run
would already have their views of Obama when they look at the hope poster. They may not see hope
as the correct word for him. So the audience is able to put their opinions with the image along with
looking at the new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since we already know who the people are in the posters we already have part of the image created in
our minds about what the posters are about. The artist uses recognizable images and current events to
bring about political and cultural thoughts onto the image. The message is brought on by the words
and what is currently happening in the world. Each image is able to be shared by mass media and
becomes better known. These posters would not make sense if they were put out during a time without
the political effect. The hope poster would not make much sense if it was put out before Obama s
political campaign. Same with the grope poster it would not make sense if the sex scandal did not
happen. The second and third image surely would not make sense if the first poster was never made.

Norman Rockwell Framed Analysis
Norman Rockwell, a 20th century painter was born in 1894. He depicted many scenes of American
culture through his perspective until his death in 1978. I chose to do my looking assignment on his oil
and graphite on canvas and wood Framed . I traveled to Roanoke to see this fine piece of art in the
Tubman Art museum. When I first looked at this piece I was very drawn to the texture. By the looks of
the picture I took, you cannot really tell that this piece is textured. This piece depicts a picture of a
man who seems to be a museum worker holding a frame and essentially framing himself in it. In this
piece you also see other pieces of art hanging on the wall around him giving him a wide variety of
very expressive looks. You see in this painting that Rockwell used a picture inside of a picture to tell
the story of the museum worker. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you look at the paintings in the background of this picture you see that they are very expression
based. Overall the figures of the museum worker is naturalistic to me. He seems to have a very
naturalistic body frame and expression. He is in kind of a contorted contraposto stance with relaxed
shoulders and varying his weight instead of just being very rigid and stiff. The paintings in the
background are different kinds of pieces. You see three different frames of artwork and then a
sculpture all of the paintings on the wall are looking at the museum worker and faced towards him
except the sculpture. This makes them have a more naturalistic feel as if they are alive by just
watching every move he is making. To me that makes him the focal point of his whole piece. The
sculpture in this piece is faced away from the museum worker in very fluid movement as if the
museum worker could be following this sculpture if she were actually

Fermat s Last Theorem Research Paper
Fermat s Last Theorem Pierre de Fermat, born in 1601, hailed by many as the king of amateurs , was a
French lawyer and mathematics hobbyist. In the margin of his copy of Diophantus Arithmetica, he
scribbled a note that would perplex and puzzle event the greatest mathematicians for the next 350
years. In this margin, Fermat wrote that there were no positive integers that can fill in x, y, and z of
xn+yn=zn, where n represents a number higher than two. This equation was based on Pythagorean
triples, infinite triplets of numbers that could satisfy the equation xn+yn=zn where n represents 2. the
problem arose when Fermat noted that, I have found a truly marvelous demonstration of this
proposition which this margin is too narrow to contain. This supposed proof was never revealed. This
was not strange for Fermat, as he had a reputation of concealing his proof in order to frustrate his
colleagues, and in Arithmetica, he frequently left out his proof. The thing that made this particular
equation stand out was the fact that after Fermat s death in 1665 and the posthumous publishing of his
Arithmetica, all other marginal conjectures were verified while this last ... Show more content on

Purpose Of Selecting A Program
The purpose of selecting this program is to deepen my studies in sustainability in detailed. Nowadays,
sustainability is a topic which research is still maturing, and designs are relatively new. The intent of
this study emphasises in ruralisation of current urban cities by creating an environment that would
allow the residents to benefit from its geographical and urban function stressing the creation of one
system. Cities in the US and around the world have developed significantly that much of the land has
transformed into Metro areas. In addition to 3 million people or greater living in these cities, people
have exhausted their options and had no alternative but to rely on high rise architecture. Many
architects and landscape architects, focus their careers trying to create sustainable cities but are still
limited by the maximum space they can utilise. Others emphasise the incorporation of biophilic
mediums to solve the problem, then again, these are very restricted to the site. As land in some
countries are finite and are reaching their maximum capacities, this will potentially become a problem
that must be solved. As innovative developments in these cities cease, buildings are stacked, rooms
miniaturised, and even expand to restricting areas to accommodate as many people as possible.
Families of four or more members settle in places where room sizes parallel those of an individual
living quarters in low density areas. These areas create an urban sprawl development that

Later in the study done by Sandy Baum and Marie O Malley, the subject at hand was the borrowers
points of view. Baum and O Malley used this portion of their study to focus on the perspectives of
borrowers about their student loan debt. They found that:
In 1987, 3.6 million students were borrowing an average of $2,500 in federal student loans. By 2001,
4.7 million students borrowed an average of $3,500 under the subsidized Stafford Loan program, and
3.4 million (including some of the same students) borrowed an average of $4,100 in unsubsidized
Stafford Loans. Federal loans now constitute about 45 percent of total student aid (7).

between the highs and lows in the economy as well as the highs and lows in colleges. When
government funding is low, colleges receive less funding from the government as well as lower
attendance. When the economy is bad, students chose to follow a programs that are job oriented

The Pros And Cons Of Arbitrage
One of the fundamental mainstays of financial economics is arbitrage. An arbitrage is the
simultaneous purchase and sale of an asset to profit from a difference in the price. This is a form of
trade that produces profits through the exploitation of the price differences of identical financial
instruments on different markets in different forms (Reverre, 2011). Arbitrage is often referred to as
risk free due to the fact that speculations are done on market movements by participants. As an
alternative, betting is being done on the mispricing of a share/asset that has occurred between two
related markets (Aarheim and Johnsen, 2013). Arbitrage therefore exists as a result of market
inefficiencies. Randall (2006) also referred to Arbitrage as the ... Show more content on

With regards to the law of one price which depicted some relations with arbitrage, assets having the
same flow of cash should trade for the same price. In the case of different prices, there is the
possibility to earn almost riskless profit. Financial derivatives prices are grounded on a certain model,
and in the case of mismatch, there is the possibility to carry out the cash and carry arbitrage in trading
both the derivative and underlying asset in such a specific way that results to almost a riskless profit.
Záškodný (2007) noted that, in the event of mispriced assets, it does not essentially imply that there is
also a riskless profit to be earned. This he attributed this to the fact that prices of financial instruments
often move in so called no arbitrage zones. The said zones are price intervals in which the prices are
not necessarily in agreement with the model, but then again because of operation costs and other
obstacles, it is not possible to arbitrage the prices to counterpart the theoretical value. The more
advanced the operation costs, the larger is the no arbitrage zone. Therefore the strategies of arbitrage
can only be executed by the movement of price away from the zone, either by the means of upper
bound or lower bound. It is also note that as a result of globalization and competition, arbitrage is only
profitable when dealing with huge volumes of business transactions. Nevertheless this is said to result
in increases in risk, because at a single point of failure a lot of losses would occur. Demonstratively, if
Company ABC s stock trades at $4.00 per share on the Ghana stock exchange market (GSE) and the

Second Language Acquisition
Recent phonetic work on second language (L2) acquisition has focused on the influence of the native
language (L1) on L2 learning by providing phonetic interpretations of non native production and
perception. Researchers have suggested that the weight of a feature used in L2, but not in L1, may
create difficulties for L2 learners. A classic example of this problem is the difficulty that Japanese
listeners experience in distinguishing English /r/ and /l/ phonemes, which are both mapped to the
Japanese /l/ (McClelland et al., 1999). Several studies have also investigated whether native speakers
of a tone language have an advantage over natisve speakers of a non tone language in discriminating
or acquiring tones from a tone language with which they have no prior experience. For example,
Gottfried and Suiter (1997) found that adult native English speakers were less successful in learning
lexical tones to signal phonological contrast, as this feature is not used in English, than they were in
learning vowel quality in Mandarin. Also, Chinese speakers outperformed English speakers in their
ability to distinguish two Thai tones both before and after training (Wayland Guion, 2004). In
addition, Peng et al. (2010) investigated the influence of different tone inventories (Mandarin vs.
Cantonese) as well as tone language vs. non tone language experience (German vs. Chinese) on the
categorical perception of pitch contours in Mandarin syllables and non speech contexts (e.g., pure
tone).

Texas Income Tax
The state of Texas should not adopt a personal income tax. Any legislator who would propose a bill
seeking to establish a state income tax would be seriously questioned, because a state income tax is
currently unconstitutional.
The Texas Constitution was amended in 1993, during Governor William P. Clements second
administration, to prohibit a state income tax. Therefore, any such proposal would have serious
difficulties passing both chambers of the legislature and then it would be subject to ratification
through a statewide referendum. Texas lack of a state income tax seems to have enhanced its economy
vitality with this approach. It also lacks a corporate income tax, which is not prohibited by the
Constitution. Texas is one of seven ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could cut the local tax rate in most school districts now around $1.50 per $100 of property value
for maintenance and operations (M O) to roughly 50 cents! The maximum M O tax rate also now
generally capped at $1.50 must be reduced by the same percentage as total M O taxes. If the income
tax cut the property tax rate by 65%, then it would also cut the tax cap by 65%. After the cap was cut,
only the voters in a school district could increase their district s maximum tax rate. The Bullock
Amendment then provides that the remaining one third of income tax revenue could be spent, but only
on education. State income tax payments are deductible from taxable income in calculating federal
income taxes. Deductibility shifts part of the cost of public education to the federal government. The
above chart shows that, although the tax would have raised $16.4 billion in 2004, the net cost to Texas
taxpayers would have been only $3.9 billion. Lower property taxes would have returned most of the
new revenue ($10.9 billion) to taxpayers. Uncle Sam would have picked up 10% of the total cost of
the income tax ($1.6 billion) through higher deductions on federal tax

The Effect Of Sound On A Film Scene

Effect of Sound on a Film Scene Sound and music in the cinematic context is an effective means of
means of communication. Motion picture soundtrack, sound effects, background music, diegetic and
non diegetic sound can supplement, enhance and expand upon the meaning of the film s narrative. The
overlap and interaction of dialogue, sound effects, atmospheric sound, score music and silence create a
harmonious and synchronized counterpoint to the image of the scene. Music in a film creates a point
of experience for the spectator. Patterns of tension and release exemplified by the sound of the scene
provide a sense of organization, connection and meaning to the audience. In my short clip from 12
years a Slave I have used music as a part of cinematic diagesis as well as a means of communication
to my audience the psychological drama of the narrative at the subconscious level.
Sound in a scene can communicate meaning and give life to a moving image. As I created the music
for the scene I had certain intentions as a director and composer which required the construction of a
multifaceted soundtrack to convey the narrative of the scene. The music is chosen and composed to
elicit emotional response and ways in which it can convey the dramatic intentions of the film
narrative. As music can convey the scope of a film, I used music in my scene to show it as an epic
drama. I tried to use sound in my scene is such a way so as to not

Pros And Cons Of Libertarianism
For this essay I shall explain libertarianism in a general sense, observing its aims and ideals for
society, what a government s role is in this society and what common views libertarians may share. I
will conclude with identifying a plausible form of this political philosophy based on the idealist merits
it puts forward to form a society based on personal freedom.
Libertarianism in a general sense is the view that every individual has the right to live their life in any
which way they may choose, so long as they hold respect for the equal rights of others. A Libertarian
government defends every individual s right to life, liberty, and property, observing that all people
hold this as a natural born right. Libertarians hold the view that, all individuals relationships should be
voluntary; and the main actions that should be restricted and punishable by law are those that involve
use of coercion against another or remove or impose on the rights of another in any such way. A
Libertarian is one who advocates maximizing individual rights and minimizing the role of the state
(What is Libertarian? 2013).
As a political philosophy Libertarianism aims towards the upholding of everyone s personal liberties
as its main principle. Classical Libertinism is built on the idea ... Show more content on

negative possibility of autonomous action, the ability to affect others negatively (What is Libertarian?

Internet Addiction Essay examples
Research Paper Theme: Social Impact of the Internet 8 October 1997 ABSTRACT The Internet is the
largest source of information in the world today. With its web sites and chat rooms, it is a means of
communicating with people in places all over the face of the earth. Since its conception in 1973, the
Internet has grown at a whirlwind rate. 51 million adults, were on line as of the second quarter 1997 in
the United States alone. Some say that the Internet is so enjoyable that it is almost addictive. The

Overeating, sex, work, exercise and gambling can be addictive if done to excess.6 Behavioral
addiction means (2) that the activity alters your emotional state in some way. The main way to
determine if an activity is addictive is if it is having a negative impact on some other important area of
your life. The questions to be answered now are, if there is such a thing as Internet addiction, what are
the effects of this addiction and why are people falling into this trap? According to Dr. Maressa

A Critical Literature Review On Highway Asset Management
1.1 Context In this critical literature review I am going to investigate what guidance and information is
currently available on the use of recycled content asphalt and research some of the more innovative
methods that are being trialled and utilised. The current economic climate in the UK is placing
additional pressures on highway authorities to increase efficiency within their capital and operational
spends. It has been suggested that using high recycled content asphalt mixes can play a large role in
reducing the costs and environmental impacts of highway maintenance plans (Metcalfe, 2016). 1.2
Highway Asset Management With so many stakeholders depending on the roads network, highway
asset management plays a pivotal role in any major economy, as without a well maintained and
managed infrastructure network, people would not be able to travel easily for work and leisure,
products would not be delivered across the country and economic prosperity would suffer. As the most
valuable asset owned by the public sector it is crucial that it is managed in transparent and accountable
manner (DfT, 2013). The Highway Assest Management Infrastructure Guidance docucment (DfT,
2013) offers the following interpretation of highway asset management: A systematic approach to
meeting the strategic need for the management and maintenance of highway infrastructure assets

White Fang Survival
White Fang, written by Jack London, describes a wonderful adventure of the Alaskan land and depicts
the life of a young wolf who goes by the name of White Fang. Throughout the novel, he experience

The first 2 characters introduces into the novel are 2 frontiersmen, Bill and Henry. They are carrying

to the sled team, made up of 6 dogs. Bill is very early marked as the gunman. Always with his gun,

authors can fit enough detail in a smaller space; therefore, it takes less time to read books and more
time to read other books or do other things. In conclusion, a story should have detail, cliff hangers,
detail, and a good pace. Some books can have different paces depending on the amount of detail

The Effect Of Reaction Time On The Brain
That step wasn t there before! and, I didn t trip. I was.... dancing, are a few excuses that people may
use when they make a mistake. It is not uncommon to hear people create these excuses to cover their
embarrassment of missing the last step on the stairs, or for tripping over a crack in the sidewalk.
Although some of these alibis may seem like reasonable answers, they are almost always incorrect.
The proper explanation for events, such as the examples mentioned, is based on reaction time. The
study of human reaction time triggered by stimulus has progressed over time; scientists now
understand how reaction time works, what it is needed for, and what factors impact reaction time.
Reaction time, like most subjects related to the brain, has an interesting history. At first, most
scientists believed that mental processes in the human brain were too fast to be measured. However, a
Dutch Physiologist named F.C. Donders started to think, about whether reaction time could be
measured in 1965. Donder s thoughts were backed up by research done by a English scientist and
inventor Charles Wheatstone. In 1840, Wheatstone conducted an experiment where a patient s foot
was shocked. The test subject had to press a button using the hand that was on the same side as the
foot that was shocked. Some patients knew which foot would be shocked and others did not know.
There was a one fifteenth second delay between the two. The was the first record of the mind being
measured (Shannon, 2012).

Shakespeare In The Bush By Laura Bohannan Analysis
Its amazing to think that our recent ancestors saw nothing wrong with burning witches and hanging
children for the crime of stealing a handkerchief while in today s Western society it is universally
accepted that these punishments are no longer acceptable. While studying AS level sociology I was
struck by the way in which individuals can affect these hugely influential changes on the society
around them. This concept, along with my study of Nazi Germany and Communist Russia, led me to a
fascination with the affects that propaganda can have on a society. The way in which such simple
methods such as posters or radio broadcasts can create a deeply nationalist and elitist society, such as
the Third Reich, which allowed for the morally destitute ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Causes Of College Dropout
The college drop out and failure rate in North America is unacceptably high and it s becoming a huge
problem. In fact, US News reports that 30% of college freshmen drop out after their first year of
college (Bowler 2). There are quite a few reasons students drop out of College. Whether it s having a
child or working two jobs, it s hard for most students to balance college and life. Some of the main
causes of dropping out include nontraditional situations, mental issues such as stress or anxiety, and
lack of self knowledge. Many college students have non traditional situations. Some students have
children or dependents that limit their available hours. This can be hard because financial aid is not
given to part time students and they may not be able to afford their classes or a caretaker. Students also
may drop out because they don t want debt in the future and can t afford college on their own. Some
students work full time or have multiple jobs to support themselves and pay for their education. This
makes it hard to pass a class because they lack time to study or to do their work outside of class. For
example, an article about why students drop out states that Nearly three quarters (71%) of students
who dropped out of college said that work contributed to the decision, with more than half (54%)
identifying it as a major factor (Kantrowitz, 3). This is a significant example because it provides hard
evidence that many students are dropping out or failing because

Transgender people and families of trans people have to cope with discrimination and hate daily. The
process of coming out is a lot different for transgender than coming out as gay. The coming out
process is very difficult and emotional for families. Going from having a daughter to a son or a son to
a daughter is a challenging, emotional process for families. Parents and families have to accept new
pronouns and name changes. That is if the family is understanding and accepting of having a
transgender son or daughter, unfortunately some parents are unaccepting. When parents don t want
anything to do with their child, the transgender person has no immediate support system. The child
has to cope with all the physical, mental, and emotional trials on their own. Not only does the child
have to deal with discrimination from society, they have to deal with discrimination from their own

Chemical Imbalances In The Brain
Depression is more than the normal ups and downs; it is a serious illness that can affect anybody, at
any age. Depression affects teenagers and even adults in many ways. Everyone experiences
unhappiness and sadness occasionally. When the depressing feelings start to take over everyday life
without a recent loss or trauma and cause physical and mental deterioration, they become what is
known as depression. About 5% of adolescents in the general population suffer from depression. It is
the world s number one psychological disorder. Some research has indicated that chemical imbalances
in the brain cause depression. Scientists think that a lack in serotonin may cause the sleep problems,
irritability, and anxiety associated with depression.
Depression is being seen in more children and teenagers. It strikes as many as 2.5 % of children and
8.3 % of teenagers in the United States today. The recent research published in Pediatrics examined
psychosocial issues in thousands of children ranging from ages 4 to 15. Low grade depression or

Essay On Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
In the 19th and 20th centuries, factories were very unsafe places to work, yet they were where most
people found jobs. Factories had accidents all of the time, but the most notable of the tragedies is the
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. The results of this event and many other factory accidents in the late
19th and early 20th centuries led to better overall conditions for workers, especially immigrant
workers. In the case of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, employees were forced to work under
horrible conditions. Many times, the employers abused their workers by setting clocks in the factory
backwards which forced their workers to unknowingly work longer shifts for the same amount of pay.
Also, most factory buildings in this time were highly unsafe, especially the Triangle Shirtwaist

Summary Of The Superfluous Woman By Vera Brittain
At the outbreak of World War One, British women were tied to a life of domesticity in the home.
However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The
war created opportunities for women to join the workforce and to fill in the vacant jobs left by the men
that went off to fight. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It
gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain
was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. The Great War was
responsible for the death of several hundred thousand men, many of which were young and unmarried.
The loss of these men left women single and/or widowed. Vera Brittain, poet of The Superfluous
Woman, was a victim of the war. Like many other women, she felt that her options were now more
than ever limited due to her fiance dying in the war. Vera Brittain (1893 1970), born in Newcastle
under Lyme, was the daughter of middle class parents, Arthur Brittain and Edith Bervon. Her only
brother, Edward, and Roland Leighton, friend of Edward, joined the British Army at the start of World
War I. Vera wanted to get involved in the war efforts. She served as a nurse and joined the Voluntary
Aid Detachment. Vera became engaged to Ronald in August of 1915. Unfortunately, four months after

involved in maintaining a constant state of equilibrium and prevents a deviation from the norm (Scott,

Ivan Denisovich Survival
Survival and preservation of humanity are among two important themes in Alexander Solzhenitsyn s,
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Through the main protagonist, Ivan Denisovich Shukhov, the
audience is transported into the reality of Stalinist repression. Throughout the novel, Solzhenitsyn
makes it clear that freedom is not a cut and dry issue. Rather, when one is focused on survival and
maintaining their dignity, some element(s) of freedom are still possible even during the most
oppressive times. 1. The author makes it clear very early on in the book that the idea of freedom is
subjective and complicated. While one would reasonably believe that men forced into labor camps
cannot possibly be free, there is more than what meets the eye. For the men that want nothing more
than to maintain some aspect of individuality during their harsh sentences, there are opportunities. For
example, Shukov mentions his spoon throughout the book. He must hide his spoon in his boot because
he is forbidden to have such personal items. Similarly, another prisoner known as Tsezar receives
mysterious and lavish packages from the outside world. These examples, regardless of how small they
may seem, allow the prisoners to have at least a small part of normalcy in their lives and is the closest
they will get to freedom. Solzhenitsyn says, The great thing about a penal camp was you had a hell of
a lot of freedom. Back in Ust Izhma if you said they couldn t get matches outside they put

Jack And Ralph Relationship In Lord Of The Flies
The Lord of the Flies is a novel about two dozen boys who are stranded on a deserted island during
World War II. In The Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Jack s relationship directly affects tribal decisions
and development. Jack and Ralph s differences in opinion, development of savagery, competitive mind
set and fight for power cause difficulty within the tribe.
Jack and Ralph s negative relationship develops there differences in opinion. Jack doesn t take it
serious that his pig hunters are not contributing to building the forts. We want meat. Well, we haven t
got any yet. And we need shelters. (Golding 51). Jack does not understand the importance of having
the shelters built as much as Ralph does. Likewise, Jack neglects the fire in order to go on a pig hunt.
This causes a ship to not notice and to bypass the island. There was a ship. Out there you said you d
keep the fire going and you let it out! (Golding 70). Jack doesn t see the importance in the rescue fire
and neglects the job he was given by Ralph. Ralph makes the rule that the only fire allowed, is the one
on top of the mountain. (Golding 81). This insures that the hunters keep the fire going because they
will need it to cook pigs. Ralph does not see the importance of catching pigs as Jack does and only
sees the importance of their rescue. In conclusion, Jack and Ralph neglect one another s priorities,
leading the development of a negative relationship.
As the boys spend more time on the island, they lose

This novel is an autobiographical narrative novel which the author names Robinson Crusoe .Novel firstly was named The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, but then was changed into Robinson Crusoe .It was published with this title with the intention to look more like the life of a sailor, not of the author itself. • 3. Social Causes Of The French Revolution The French Revolution was an event that would rattle France s Bourbon monarchy and their neighboring royal families of Europe. Stemming from multiple causes such as the lack of food and other necessities, a growing social inequality in the face of the Enlightenment, and economic decline, the French Revolution bred dissent, notably among the masses in Paris. At the height on the Revolution, it became as much of a crusade against their fellow countrymen as it was against their outside enemies. After seizing power, political factions consistently accused each other of working against the Revolution, and royalist insurrections fueled the disarray. Leading up to Revolution itself was the growing social inequality. With the centralization of the French state due to the efforts of French kings such as Louis XIV, French common citizens found themselves subjected to the will of a nobility that became increasingly hostile to any sort of concessions. Many families were struggling to make ends meet while seeing those at the top of society turn a blind eye. Warfare contributed to this as well, notably the Seven Years War in which France lost much of it s New World territory and the American War of Independence after which the French came away with little spoils, not nearly enough to make up for the money spent on the war. With their country on the verge of economic collapse, French prices soared, forcing French commoners into an increasingly small box. Faced with an increasing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Linux Security Robert Hoffman Linux Research 2.1 Security for computers is one of the most important aspects of a system that has to be in place. For this paper I will be writing about four security features that Linux systems use; these are SELinux, chroot jail, openSSH, and iptables. I will briefly describe what they do to provide security. SELinux (security enhanced Linux) was developed by the NSA, who chose Linux as its operating system to create a more secure operating system. Since the development of SELinux by the NSA most Linux distributions now implement SELinux as a standard. Traditional Linux systems use a security called (DAC) discretionary access control. With this approach users and their objects, i.e., files ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Setting iptables is highly beneficial to your system, along with a main firewall iptables allows for a more secure system based on parameters you set in the iptables. OpenSSH is a set of programs that provide encrypted communication between networks. Created by the openBSD team as an alternative to the original SSH software. When it starts there are two tasks that it performs right away, first it establishes an encrypted connection, second it authenticates the user. When these two tasks are complete two systems can securely send information back and forth. When the session is started openSSH encrypts anything sent out on the network, this prevents many security risks from being exploited. Two key pairs are used to enable an encrypted connection; a host key pair and a session key pair. The host key pair is established when the system forst boots and consists of public and private keys. The session key pair also consists of a public and private key and these change hourly. When a client first connects with a server you are asked to verify that the server you are wanting to connect to is the right one. Once verification is complete the client make a copy of the servers public host key so the next time the client wants to connect to that server it will have a copy of the key to verify the server with. • 6. Importance of Thinking in Troilus and Criseyde and Hamlet... Importance of Thinking in Troilus and Criseyde and Hamlet Troilus and Hamlet have much in common. Both have represented the quintessential tragic heroes of two literary periods. Both lovers, Troilus and Hamlet lose what they love despite their earth shaking groans. Both are surrounded by traitors and are traitorous in kind. Both are embattled and this is no secret both die. But somewhere on that mortal coil on which they are both strung, they confront a similar question, a question which divides them in no sense less than the waters divide England and Denmark the question of action. This essay pretends to do little more than probe the circumstances of that question in relation to a speech that appears prominently in Shakespeare s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now, Hamlet comprehends the arbitrary nature of power that would send an army against a minuscule plot of ground. He understands good and evil and the machiavellian wheels that grease the way to the throne as they are, a process in which he is complicit. Hamlet, a once simple prince, is sick at heart. An inextricable belief in fate centers this bitter epistemological com ëment. In Hamlet s world, birth alone is a telling reason and excuse for tainted character (1.4.24 26, 1.5.91). But heaven takes part as well; there s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow (5.2.230 231). Taken together, this realization of inequity and the apparently long understood mechanism of biological predestination, are staggering to Horatio s sweet prince. If such biological predestination is true, then how should Hamlet understand the base actions of his family members and of himself? Either his family are impostors to nobility or this idea of predestination is faulty. The play gives ample evidence of a prince who has long dallied in philosophy and seldom lived in the world. Indeed, the transparent nonsense that a person may not exceed his birth is indicative of this. Like Joyce s Stephen Dedalus, Hamlet glamorizes death through his sable clothes. Claudius?and Gertrude s advice is honest, sincere, and worldly: death is the most commonplace of occurrences: accept it and nmove on. When the murder is revealed, progression ... • 7. Essay On My Love Of Literature As a child, I enjoyed literature. I was fascinated by the bright illustrations and flamboyant texts that accompanied these simple stories which always involved a lively ending and a central theme. I read in order to find enjoyment through the ludicrous adventures of the children s story protagonists. As I progressed through grade school, the style and my association with literature began to drastically change.I was told that these books would broaden my knowledge, enrich my vocabulary and strengthen my writing skills. Perhaps this is true, but I could not help feeling that reading had now become homework (a forced assignment) and it not help these books lacked the charm which the ones of my childhood possessed. I now dislike the concept of literature because books I now read lack the virtues which I enjoyed in children s books and are read only because they are a requirement of my education. The first reason why I now dislike the concept of literature is because books I now read lack the virtues which I enjoyed in children s books. First, the books I once read like Eric Carle and Geronimo Stilton contained vivid illustrations, flamboyant texts, and playful adventures. I remember In Kindergarten during story time, my teacher would enthusiastically read the works of Eric Carle, holding the book in way that the whole class could see the illustrations. • 8. Images of Love in Chaucer s Troilus and Criseyde Essay... Images of Love in Chaucer s Troilus and Criseyde The image of love created by Chaucer in Book I of Troilus and Criseyde is one which elicits pity rather than admiration. Yet, the poet professes to serve and celebrate the God of Love. Is the superficially motivated but all consuming passion sparked in Troilus meant to serve as a warning to other lovers or a model? With the presence of several narrative interjections by the poet himself suggesting a method of interpretation, clearly some emphasis is placed upon an audience s ability to learn from The double sorwe of Troilus (1). As a cautionary tale, though, perhaps Chaucer attempts to describe the paradoxes seemingly inseparable from the very concept of love itself, rather ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ...every other charge he set at nought (444). Ironically, Troilus, who once mocked other lovers, falls victim to (is humbled by) the curse or illness of love. Like the other classical and legendary examples Chaucer provides in Phebus Apollo and Paris, the love which plagues Troilus is described as a compulsion, a force which is virtually impossible to resist. Troilus often uses the word burning to describe his passion, likening his love to a fire which, once sparked, will rage out of his control. The anguish from this unrequited but constant fire brings Troilus to contemplate and even wish for death as a release. Though Pandarus offers his advice and promises Troilus a happy resolution, the seeds of the tragedy to come seem to be sewn into this self destructive notion of love. Rather than presenting love as a unified concept or code of behavior to be imitated, Chaucer understands well that love is capable of housing contradictory, even radically opposed, ideas. For thilke grownd that bereth weeds wikke/ Bereth eh thise holsom herbes... (946 7). Perhaps it is a sense of this underlying paradox which Chaucer hopes to convey to his audience. Perhaps, further, he hopes to suggest that the social conventions surrounding love in his era help to create the dangerous form of love seen in Troilus. Questions, though not necessarily these ones, are encouraged by the poem itself. Troilus questions love, Pandarus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For the Obama hope poster I am reminded of the political campaign of him running and the photograph the poster referenced. In the second and third poster I am reminded of the first poster as these are a parody of sorts of it. The second poster has a portrait of the Joker from the batman series. The third is a reference to Bill Clinton s sex scandal. The artist uses art appropriation to use an image that the audience already knows. Since the audience is already familiar with parts of the image it becomes sort of a parody. The audience can look at the piece and form their own judgements based on what they think about these events. For example a person who was not a fan of Obama during his political run would already have their views of Obama when they look at the hope poster. They may not see hope as the correct word for him. When I first looked at this piece I was very drawn to the texture. By the looks of the picture I took, you cannot really tell that this piece is textured. This piece depicts a picture of a man who seems to be a museum worker holding a frame and essentially framing himself in it. This makes them have a more naturalistic feel as if they are alive by just watching every move he is making. To me that makes him the focal point of his whole piece. In the margin of his copy of Diophantus Arithmetica, he scribbled a note that would perplex and puzzle event the greatest mathematicians for the next 350 years. In this margin, Fermat wrote that there were no positive integers that can fill in x, y, and z of xn+yn=zn, where n represents a number higher than two. This equation was based on Pythagorean triples, infinite triplets of numbers that could satisfy the equation xn+yn=zn where n represents 2. the problem arose when Fermat noted that, I have found a truly marvelous demonstration of this proposition which this margin is too narrow to contain. This supposed proof was never revealed. This was not strange for Fermat, as he had a reputation of concealing his proof in order to frustrate his colleagues, and in Arithmetica, he frequently left out his proof. Nowadays, sustainability is a topic which research is still maturing, and designs are relatively new. The intent of this study emphasises in ruralisation of current urban cities by creating an environment that would allow the residents to benefit from its geographical and urban function stressing the creation of one system. Cities in the US and around the world have developed significantly that much of the land has transformed into Metro areas. In addition to 3 million people or greater living in these cities, people have exhausted their options and had no alternative but to rely on high rise architecture. Many architects and landscape architects, focus their careers trying to create sustainable cities but are still limited by the maximum space they can utilise. Others emphasise the incorporation of biophilic mediums to solve the problem, then again, these are very restricted to the site. As land in some countries are finite and are reaching their maximum capacities, this will potentially become a problem that must be solved. As innovative developments in these cities cease, buildings are stacked, rooms miniaturised, and even expand to restricting areas to accommodate as many people as possible. Families of four or more members settle in places where room sizes parallel those of an individual living quarters in low density areas. These areas create an urban sprawl development that ... • 17. The Pros And Cons Of Arbitrage One of the fundamental mainstays of financial economics is arbitrage. An arbitrage is the simultaneous purchase and sale of an asset to profit from a difference in the price. This is a form of trade that produces profits through the exploitation of the price differences of identical financial instruments on different markets in different forms (Reverre, 2011). Arbitrage is often referred to as risk free due to the fact that speculations are done on market movements by participants. As an alternative, betting is being done on the mispricing of a share/asset that has occurred between two related markets (Aarheim and Johnsen, 2013). Arbitrage therefore exists as a result of market inefficiencies. Randall (2006) also referred to Arbitrage as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With regards to the law of one price which depicted some relations with arbitrage, assets having the same flow of cash should trade for the same price. In the case of different prices, there is the possibility to earn almost riskless profit. Financial derivatives prices are grounded on a certain model, and in the case of mismatch, there is the possibility to carry out the cash and carry arbitrage in trading both the derivative and underlying asset in such a specific way that results to almost a riskless profit. Záškodný (2007) noted that, in the event of mispriced assets, it does not essentially imply that there is also a riskless profit to be earned. This he attributed this to the fact that prices of financial instruments often move in so called no arbitrage zones. The said zones are price intervals in which the prices are not necessarily in agreement with the model, but then again because of operation costs and other obstacles, it is not possible to arbitrage the prices to counterpart the theoretical value. The more advanced the operation costs, the larger is the no arbitrage zone. Therefore the strategies of arbitrage can only be executed by the movement of price away from the zone, either by the means of upper bound or lower bound. It is also note that as a result of globalization and competition, arbitrage is only profitable when dealing with huge volumes of business transactions. Nevertheless this is said to result in increases in risk, because at a single point of failure a lot of losses would occur. Demonstratively, if Company ABC s stock trades at $4.00 per share on the Ghana stock exchange market (GSE) and the same of $4.05 on the Nigeria stock exchange market (NSE), an arbitrageur would purchase the stock for $4 on the Ghana stock exchange and sell it at the value of $5.05 on the Nigeria stock exchange market which yields him/her the ... • 18. Second Language Acquisition Recent phonetic work on second language (L2) acquisition has focused on the influence of the native language (L1) on L2 learning by providing phonetic interpretations of non native production and perception. Researchers have suggested that the weight of a feature used in L2, but not in L1, may create difficulties for L2 learners. A classic example of this problem is the difficulty that Japanese listeners experience in distinguishing English /r/ and /l/ phonemes, which are both mapped to the Japanese /l/ (McClelland et al., 1999). Several studies have also investigated whether native speakers of a tone language have an advantage over natisve speakers of a non tone language in discriminating or acquiring tones from a tone language with which they have no prior experience. For example, Gottfried and Suiter (1997) found that adult native English speakers were less successful in learning lexical tones to signal phonological contrast, as this feature is not used in English, than they were in learning vowel quality in Mandarin. Also, Chinese speakers outperformed English speakers in their ability to distinguish two Thai tones both before and after training (Wayland Guion, 2004). In addition, Peng et al. (2010) investigated the influence of different tone inventories (Mandarin vs. Cantonese) as well as tone language vs. non tone language experience (German vs. Chinese) on the categorical perception of pitch contours in Mandarin syllables and non speech contexts (e.g., pure tone). ... Any legislator who would propose a bill seeking to establish a state income tax would be seriously questioned, because a state income tax is currently unconstitutional. The Texas Constitution was amended in 1993, during Governor William P. Clements second administration, to prohibit a state income tax. Therefore, any such proposal would have serious difficulties passing both chambers of the legislature and then it would be subject to ratification through a statewide referendum. Texas lack of a state income tax seems to have enhanced its economy vitality with this approach. It also lacks a corporate income tax, which is not prohibited by the Constitution. The maximum M O tax rate also now generally capped at $1.50 must be reduced by the same percentage as total M O taxes. If the income tax cut the property tax rate by 65%, then it would also cut the tax cap by 65%. After the cap was cut, only the voters in a school district could increase their district s maximum tax rate. The Bullock Amendment then provides that the remaining one third of income tax revenue could be spent, but only on education. State income tax payments are deductible from taxable income in calculating federal income taxes. Deductibility shifts part of the cost of public education to the federal government. The above chart shows that, although the tax would have raised $16.4 billion in 2004, the net cost to Texas taxpayers would have been only $3.9 billion. The overlap and interaction of dialogue, sound effects, atmospheric sound, score music and silence create a harmonious and synchronized counterpoint to the image of the scene. In my short clip from 12 years a Slave I have used music as a part of cinematic diagesis as well as a means of communication to my audience the psychological drama of the narrative at the subconscious level. Sound in a scene can communicate meaning and give life to a moving image. As I created the music for the scene I had certain intentions as a director and composer which required the construction of a multifaceted soundtrack to convey the narrative of the scene. The music is chosen and composed to elicit emotional response and ways in which it can convey the dramatic intentions of the film narrative. As music can convey the scope of a film, I used music in my scene to show it as an epic drama. I tried to use sound in my scene is such a way so as to not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Pros And Cons Of Libertarianism For this essay I shall explain libertarianism in a general sense, observing its aims and ideals for society, what a government s role is in this society and what common views libertarians may share. I will conclude with identifying a plausible form of this political philosophy based on the idealist merits it puts forward to form a society based on personal freedom. Libertarianism in a general sense is the view that every individual has the right to live their life in any which way they may choose, so long as they hold respect for the equal rights of others. A Libertarian government defends every individual s right to life, liberty, and property, observing that all people hold this as a natural born right. Libertarians hold the view that, all individuals relationships should be voluntary; and the main actions that should be restricted and punishable by law are those that involve use of coercion against another or remove or impose on the rights of another in any such way. A Libertarian is one who advocates maximizing individual rights and minimizing the role of the state (What is Libertarian? 2013). It is not uncommon to hear people create these excuses to cover their embarrassment of missing the last step on the stairs, or for tripping over a crack in the sidewalk. Although some of these alibis may seem like reasonable answers, they are almost always incorrect. The proper explanation for events, such as the examples mentioned, is based on reaction time. The study of human reaction time triggered by stimulus has progressed over time; scientists now understand how reaction time works, what it is needed for, and what factors impact reaction time. Reaction time, like most subjects related to the brain, has an interesting history. At first, most scientists believed that mental processes in the human brain were too fast to be measured. However, a Dutch Physiologist named F.C. Donders started to think, about whether reaction time could be measured in 1965. Donder s thoughts were backed up by research done by a English scientist and inventor Charles Wheatstone. In 1840, Wheatstone conducted an experiment where a patient s foot was shocked. The test subject had to press a button using the hand that was on the same side as the foot that was shocked. Some patients knew which foot would be shocked and others did not know. Whether it s having a child or working two jobs, it s hard for most students to balance college and life. Some of the main causes of dropping out include nontraditional situations, mental issues such as stress or anxiety, and lack of self knowledge. Many college students have non traditional situations. This can be hard because financial aid is not given to part time students and they may not be able to afford their classes or a caretaker. Students also may drop out because they don t want debt in the future and can t afford college on their own. Some students work full time or have multiple jobs to support themselves and pay for their education. This makes it hard to pass a class because they lack time to study or to do their work outside of class. For example, an article about why students drop out states that Nearly three quarters (71%) of students who dropped out of college said that work contributed to the decision, with more than half (54%) identifying it as a major factor (Kantrowitz, 3). However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. Use Of Primary And Secondary Sources At first glance this book may seemed like just a collection of letters, songs, and inventory lists, but shortly after entering the first chapter it was abundantly clear that the title is very misleading. Laundry list s and love songs are but a minuscule, compared to the ample supply of translations that the author Andrea McDowell has implemented into this collection. Village Life in Ancient Egypt was published in 1999 by Oxford University Press, A well known source of educational publications. McDowell uses a small variety, but by no means lacking in quantity, of primary and secondary sources, the majority of which consisted of translations from either unearthed ostraca, or the less common papyrus. This Review will discuss the structure of the book, McDowell s use of primary and secondary sources, and how she gets her argument across. This text contains an abundance of information regarding, roughly every aspect of village life during the New Kingdom (1570 1070 B.C) in ancient Egypt. The book is arranged into six chapters including an introduction and an Epilogue. The chapters are: family and friends; daily life; religion; education, learning, and literature; law and work on the royal tomb. Each Chapter is introduced with a brief description of its contents and how the aged texts were implemented. Within each chapter are sub headers that describe itself along with its relation to the chapter. Within each sub header are the translated Egyptian texts. Each translated piece ... • 42. Ivan Denisovich Survival Survival and preservation of humanity are among two important themes in Alexander Solzhenitsyn s, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Through the main protagonist, Ivan Denisovich Shukhov, the audience is transported into the reality of Stalinist repression. Throughout the novel, Solzhenitsyn makes it clear that freedom is not a cut and dry issue. Rather, when one is focused on survival and maintaining their dignity, some element(s) of freedom are still possible even during the most oppressive times. 1. The author makes it clear very early on in the book that the idea of freedom is subjective and complicated. While one would reasonably believe that men forced into labor camps cannot possibly be free, there is more than what meets the eye. For the men that want nothing more than to maintain some aspect of individuality during their harsh sentences, there are opportunities. For example, Shukov mentions his spoon throughout the book. He must hide his spoon in his boot because he is forbidden to have such personal items. Similarly, another prisoner known as Tsezar receives mysterious and lavish packages from the outside world. These examples, regardless of how small they may seem, allow the prisoners to have at least a small part of normalcy in their lives and is the closest they will get to freedom. Solzhenitsyn says, The great thing about a penal camp was you had a hell of a lot of freedom. Back in Ust Izhma if you said they couldn t get matches outside they put ...
