What is SAFE- COM?
• It is a modified aircraft seat,
&
• Hence the Safety and Comfort is enhanced.
• Thus the name, SAFE-COM!!! (SAFEty and COMfort)
Adjustable leg rest for people with a medical condition and/or
senior passengers
With sensors to detect:
1. Seat belt not fastened
2. Seat in upright position
3. Aisle side arm-rest not lowered
4. Open tray tables
Need to Feed
• Crew members need to ensure safety criteria such as buckled seat belts,
upright seats, folded tray tables and lowered arm rests.
• Also, senior passengers and people with medical conditions experience
discomfort, due to absence of feet elevation
• Current technologies are not flexible, complex to implement and are not
portable
Market Research 1 – Senior Passengers
• Sample size: 50 (aged between 58- 73)
• Number of males: 32 Number of females: 18
• Results
(a) 70% of samples take the plane, at least twice a year.
(b) Out of them, 88% experience leg pain due to restricted movement and no
feet elevation.
(c) 95% would be willing to pay a small amount for a leg rest.
Market Research 2 – Cabin Crew
• Sample size: 14 (aged between 27- 42)
• Number of males: 5 Number of females: 9
• Results
(a) Average time for checking safety compliance is more than defined
(b) 92% of crew members have to check twice (during take-off and landing)
(c) 83% feel unsafe to perform checks during turbulence
Seat Belt and Inclination Indicators
• Consists of four components: one seat belt sensor (fitted in buckle) and three
additional sensors (fitted in back rest, arm rest and tray table)
• Belt unbuckled/ Seat inclined/ Arm rest not lowered/ tray tables not closed----
signal transmitted to receiver
• Receiver sends signal to programmed micro-controller
• Empty seats eliminated by checking against booking details (check already included
in program)
• Centralized Control Console displays seat location and passenger information
• Passenger(s) are requested by cabin crew to comply with safety instructions
Benefits
This will,
• Allow for 100% safety compliance, with regards to safety instructions
• Reduce preparation time before take-off
• Eliminate/ Reduce manual checking by crew members
• Long term: make passengers more responsible
Leg Rest (for increased comfort )
• Adjustable and portable, easy to install and remove, lightweight
• Modification compatible with both the front row seats and remaining
seats
• Consists of:
(a) two C-brackets
(b) tubes
(c) pivots
(d) left and right foot rest components (made with padding)
Features & Benefits
• Will allow passengers to flex their
feet and stretch their legs
• Hinge in assembly will enable folding
action
• Includes telescoping tube mechanism,
for smooth extension
• Does not obstruct access to the life
jacket, and the space under the seat
for placing bags.
