An introduction into what "the cloud" means with respect to SharePoint and some of the considerations when deciding whether to use Office 365.

Are you still using Docker in production? Get over it! Serverless is the NEW future of the Cloud. But since the Cloud is still someone else's computer, that needs to be managed too. And if it is sitting idle, you probably have to pay for it whether you like it or not. No server can be more easily managed than no server. Therefore: meet Serverless, a new paradigm that truly approaches the Pay-as-You-Go philosophy once promised by the Cloud.
This session explores Serverless, its impact on existing architectures, and assesses it's usability for Mobile Back-ends as a Service (MBaaS), Functions-as-a-Service (FaaS) and also for Microservices based architectures hosted in the cloud.
With popular poster children such as Netflix and Amazon, using microservices-based architectures seems to be the killer approach to twenty-first-century architecture. This session goes over the benefits, but more so the pitfalls, of using a microservices-based architecture. What impact does it have on your organization, your applications, and dealing with scale and failures, and how do you prevent your landscape from becoming an unmaintainable nightmare?
How to Leverage Serverless to Optimize for Cost and PerformanceDevOps.com
Serverless technology is growing in popularity and is often lauded as a “hands free” solution with benefits like unlimited scale, less operational staff -- and of course, lower cost. But like any new technology, reaping the benefits requires a more strategic approach than it may seem. Just as when companies moved from on-premise to the cloud, “lifting and shifting” existing applications to serverless can lead to less than optimal performance and price.
In this webinar, Bill Buckley, VP of Engineering at CloudZero, will discuss considerations when a group is building or moving to serverless infrastructure, so that you can experience the cost, cultural and performance benefits. He’ll cover:
Cultural considerations to get the most out of a severless transformation
Architectural considerations when leveraging serverless technologies that will keep your costs in check
How to implement serverless cost and performance monitoring to gain visibility into your systems
How the CloudZero engineering team built their product on serverless infrastructure and was able to reduce their AWS bill, even as they added more customers
So you're in the Cloud — but what does that mean? With choices like multi-region, multi-Cloud, hybrid and mixed environments, there's no "one size fits all" when it comes to Cloud. But whatever your choice, Akamai can help you with your Cloud infrastructure before, during and after your Cloud transformation. In this session, Akamai and Rackspace will explore and showcase common Cloud transformations: (1) typical ordering and fulfillment apps transformation from an on-premise, dedicated DC to the Cloud using Amazon AWS (2) similar transformation using Microsoft Azure (3) multi-Cloud environments across AWS, Azure, GCP (Google Cloud Platform), Rackspace and dedicated hosting. For each use case, we'll illustrate how Akamai can help you achieve your business needs of availability, scalability, security, cost and user-experience while you can focus on your core business goals.
Observability foundations in dynamically evolving architecturesBoyan Dimitrov
Holistic application health monitoring, request tracing across distributed systems, instrumentation, business process SLAs - all of them are integral parts of today’s technical stacks. Nevertheless many teams decide to integrate observability last which makes it an almost impossible challenge - especially if you have to deal with hundreds and thousands of services. Therefore starting early is essential and in this talk we are going to see how we can solve those challenges early and explore the foundations of building and evolving complex microservices platforms in respect to observability.
We are going to share some of the best practices and quick wins that allow us to correlate different telemetry systems and gradually build up towards more sophisticated use-cases.
We are also going to look at some of the standard AWS services such as X-Ray and Cloudwatch that help us get going "for free" and then discuss more complex tooling and integrations building up towards a fully integrated ecosystem. As part of this talk we are also going to share some of the learnings we have made at Sixt on this topic and we are going to introduce some of the solutions that help us operate our microservices stack
Revolutionising Cloud Operations with AWS Config, AWS CloudTrail and AWS Clou...Amazon Web Services
The rate of change is typically higher within AWS than you would experience in an on-premises environment. Automation becomes standard, and the metric and logs you need to track will change. The AWS Operational Checklist provides a blueprint to increase the likelihood of successful deployments and frustration- free operations. This session dives deep into several patterns from the checklist and shows how to apply and extend these patterns to support the Hybrid Cloud using AWS services such as AWS Config, AWS Cloudtrail and AWS CloudWatch. Practical examples will demonstrate how these services can be combined with other AWS tools such as the AWS CLI and PowerShell in order to maximize the benefit to your organisation.
Speaker: Matt House, Solutions Architect, Amazon Web Services
Another day, another buzzword in the world of software development! ‘Microservices’ is a new approach to structuring server-side software. But is it really new? In this talk I’ll walk you through the birth and ‘raison d’etre’ of microservices and tell about pro’s and con’s of the approach.
Having laid the foundation, we will take a look at best-practices and patterns for building micro service architectures and combine this with a tour of current technologies and development tools.
Finally, I will take a quick look at the future and discuss some of the remaining challenges. All parts of the presentation will be accompanied by structural examples based on a real ecommerse system.

2019-10-15 - the future of cloud-native Java - Bert ErtmanApeldoorn JUG
Java is an open language. Every developer or organization can contribute to its open source components (libraries & frameworks) and even to the language specifications itself. This way, the community helps to improve the language continuously. While this gives developers a lot of freedom, it makes it hard to standardize. The software architecture of a Java application starts with its runtime (that is the combination of frameworks, specifications and application server). For years, monolitic JEE applications were hosted on heavy application servers. But is this platform the best option for fast, flexible and controlled delivery of business value embedded in cloud native-applications running on both IAAS-platforms and CAAS-containers? In this session Java-champion Bert Ertman will give his view.
Bert Ertman:
Fellow, and VP Technology at Luminis. Besides assignments at customers, he is responsible for stimulating innovation, knowledge sharing, coaching, technology choices and presales activities. A frequent speaker on Java, Cloud, and software architecture all over the world. Book author, and serial conference organizer. Bert Ertman was awarded the coveted title of Java Champion in 2008, and is a JavaOne RockStar speaker and twofold Duke’s Choice award winner.

Since AWS launched Lambda in 2014, the term “serverless” has been used (and misused) to describe compute models, technologies, architectural patterns, operational constructs, and even rebranded cgi-bins. The term is now used so broadly that it’s turning into a buzzword with no discernible meaning.
In this talk, we’ll cut through all the marketing hype, and discuss why the underlying concept of “serverless”, and the superpowers that come with it, are much more important than the name itself.
Microservices and serverless for MegaStartups - DLD TLV 2017Boaz Ziniman
Microservices and Serverless computing allow you to build and run simpler and more efficient applications, while improving your agility and saving a lot of money.
The ability to deploy your applications without the need for provisioning or managing servers opens for startups new opportunities to build web, mobile, and IoT backends; run stream processing or big data workloads; run chatbots, and more, without the investment in hardware or professional manpower to run this hardware.
In this session, we will learn how to get started with Microservices and Serverless computing with AWS Lambda, which lets you run code without provisioning or managing servers.

Cloud-native Data: Every Microservice Needs a Cachecornelia davis
Presented at the Pivotal Toronto Users Group, March 2017
Cloud-native applications form the foundation for modern, cloud-scale digital solutions, and the patterns and practices for cloud-native at the app tier are becoming widely understood – statelessness, service discovery, circuit breakers and more. But little has changed in the data tier. Our modern apps are often connected to monolithic shared databases that have monolithic practices wrapped around them. As a result, the autonomy promised by moving to a microservices application architecture is compromised.
With lessons from the application tier to guide us, the industry is now figuring out what the cloud-native architectural patterns are at the data tier. Join us to explore some of these with Cornelia Davis, a five year Cloud Foundry veteran who is now focused on cloud-native data. As it happens, every microservice needs a cache and this evening will drill deep on that topic. She’ll cover a variety of caching patterns and use cases, and demonstrate how their use helps preserve the autonomy that is driving agile software delivery practices today.
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
