Contract RF engineer for Rigado LLC.
4/04 – 6/15 Garmin AT, Salem OR
Completed redesign of a WAAS GPS receiver RF portion. The initial
design was performed by a consultant. I made necessary corrections and
modifications in order to meet design specifications. I then was
assigned to several research projects to design DSP algorithms for a
radar altimeter, ADF receiver, audio processing subsystem, narrow
channel aviation AM receiver, D8PSK aviation transceiver, and Cartesian
Loop linearization method (RF and DSP) for an aviation communications
transceiver (excluding the Power Amplifier itself). For these projects
I designed the DSP algorithms and converted several of them to VHDL for
eventual FPGA realization.
I designed the RF receivers and DSP modulation/demodulation algorithms
for several dual 978/1090 MHz Universal Access Transceivers for general
aviation aircraft, including the Garmin products GDL-88, GDL-39, and a
yet to be released sub-miniture direct conversion receiver. I designed
the RF receiver circuitry, triplexer and some DSP receiver algorithms
for a triple Mode A/C/S Transponder (not yet in production). I designed
DSP filtering and signal processing for a combined VOR/ILS/Glide Slope
receiver(not yet in production).
7/03 – 11/03 UMD Technology Inc,
Tigard, OR
Optimized the design of a 915 MHz, ISM band FSK transceiver. This
included modifying the receiver, transmitter and synthesizer sections
in order to meet performance specifications for the radio link.
Performed RF characterization of several burn-in sockets, in order to

2. provide the customer with signal integrity data for the socket to 3
GHz. I was laid off due to lack of business.
8/02 – 6/03
Self-Employed. Since the closure of InnovaComm Technologies, I was
continuously engaged as a consultant by a number of companies. I
performed design and simulation and characterization work for a medical
technology firm on an implantable low power RF data link.
Simultaneously I also provided contract engineering work at Maxtek
Components Corporation on the design and analysis for a DC-8 GHz
switched attenuator with internal limiter using Genesis 7.5 EM
simulation and Ansoft designer. Other assignments included design work
for a California Photonics device manufacturer. This involved Rx
sensitivity analysis and design of an evaluation board for a 2.5Gbps
Avalanche Photo Diode/TIA receiver. I also consulted for a company
producing a 2nd generation multi-channel iDen protocol transceiver,
providing system analysis and architecture for this radio.
8/00 – 7/02 InnovaComm
Technologies, Tualatin. OR
Designed Complete RF to Baseband portion of an iDEN protocol indoor
base station transceiver in order to meet specifications. Redesigned
synthesizer, receiver lineup and base band filtering and offset control
sections. Performed 2.5-D EM simulations on substrate/package designs
for two 10Gbps OC-192 fiber optic transceiver projects. Designed Input
/ Output structures for 40Gbps OC-768 Transmitter and Receiver multi-
chip module and MSA application boards. Completed electrical design of
a 2.5 Gbps Small Form Factor fiber optic transceiver. InnovaComm closed
down 7/22/02. At InnovaComm, I was the only RF design engineer and as
such all RF related tasks including analysis of new opportunities and
sustaining engineering of existing RF products were performed by me.
1/99 - 7/00 Cadence Design Systems,
Beaverton. OR
Designed low cost 902-928 MHz ISM band transceiver with direction
finding capability for live asset tracking/location. Evaluated pager
design and recommended design improvements for a customer company
experiencing difficulties qualifying their pager product. Worked on
system study for FHSS transceiver in the 902-928 MHz band. Worked on
IS-136 cell phone preliminary study for adaptation to SMR band.
Investigated preliminary architecture for Bluetooth test module multi-
loop synthesizer.
4/96 – 11/98 Maxtek Components
Corporation. Beaverton, OR.
Designed transmitter lineup and synthesizer for 2.4 GHz frequency
hopping modulated backscatter data communications system. The design
included dual UHF/VHF PLL's, OOK/AM modulated 1 Watt PA, and stripline
harmonic filters. Designed ultra-low cost 2.7 Volt, 5 kbps AM data
transmitters and receivers at 315-433 MHz to be used as surface mount
RF components in keyless entry type systems. Designed and prototyped a
62.5 kbps low cost multi-channel FSK transceiver for the 902-928 MHz
ISM band.

3. 10/94 – 4/96 Sharp Microelectronics
Technology Inc, Camas, WA.
I was a Receiver design engineer for an IS-54 dual mode
(analog/digital) cellular telephone. I completed LNA, mixer, and IF
strip design from 900 MHz to 455 kHz using a mixture of discreet and
integrated (functional block IC) design. I also executed Synthesizer
design for a second generation IS-54 dual mode cellular telephone with
UHF and VHF loops operating from a 2.7-3.6 volt supply. Tasks included
design for testability, manufacturability, and low cost.
9/87 – 9/94 IIMorrow Inc, Salem,
Oregon
Began design work on precision low phase noise synthesizer prototype
for the IIMorrow Vehicle Communications Network Base Station (through
prototype - project cancelled). I was Receiver design engineer for a
220 MHz Mobile Data Radio. Design responsibilities included the RF and
IF sections of the receiver. Performed integration and system test of
the radio hardware. Designed the ALC circuitry for the power amplifier.
I was also RF Engineer (with some DSP responsibility)for a
Rayleigh/multipath channel simulator to be used in the system testing
of the 220 MHz radio. Performed basic research for selection of
modulation for narrow-band digital radio.
My other responsibilities included analog engineering on a research
project for linear LORAN receiver. Design work included analog ASIC
design with standard cells and research on optimum analogdigital
filters for advanced LORAN receiver. d prototype Rayleigh fading
simulator.
