The focused question for my research is: How being raised by a single parent affects how children and their development?
In order to make our research successful we should conduct research about similar researches done in the past on similar or related topics with the same outcome. The same will be a part of the Literature Review of our research which includes all the scholarly articles that we can study during the course of our research. This will help us to broaden our thinking and help us to think ideas which we might have missed. Thus conducting a literature review is an essential part of a research process. It is also not possible for us to go use the entire article as a part of our research process or else the essence of our research questions would get diluted, thus conducting a literature review should be done with utmost care. We shall take notes from the different articles we review and include those notes as literature reviews in the report.
An article which I reviewed in the course of the study was “Are Married Parents Really Better for Children? What Research Says about the Effects of Family Structure on Child well-being” by Mary Parke. The topic mentioned above and my research topic is very similar and the main scope of research by Mary Parke is the effect of family structure on the wellbeing of children. There is not a very big difference in the topic of my research. A thorough study of the topic helped me to refine my research question. Earlier my research question was focussed only on the growth and development of a child under single parenting. But with the study of this paper I changed the research topic to “The effects of single parenting on the well being of children”. Thus now my study not only included the affects of single parenting on the growth and development of a child, but also on how the same child lived as an adult and if the single parenting had any significant impact on the life of the same child as an adult.
The basic question asked by Mary Parke in her study is “How the changes in family structure have affected the well being of children”. The topic is very explicit in nature and clearly states the possible outcome. There can be only two outcomes for this research whether the changes in family structure witnessed over the last few decades have or have not affected the well being of a child grown up under single parenting.
The major ideas of the study by Mary Parke was that the if single parenting effects the well being of children, then how can marriages be made more stronger in order to avoid the effects single parenting has on the well being of children. The study also tries to find out the differences between a child who is raised under two parents and those raised by single parenting. It also looks at if there exists any significant differences between the well-being of these two.

For my final project I am choosing the environmental influences on personality particularly about childhood experiences and their effect on an individual’s personalities. I am contrasting childhood experiences that are caused by their environment to the effect on their personality, I will use the correlation research method. A questionnaire will be used in order to obtain the information I would need. This method would admit me to have a larger sample base, have a better image of the relationship, and numerous variables providing for better research circumstances down the road. The disadvantage to this technique would be, I would not have a personal relationship from those apart of the study and this could cause a lack of dishonesty. Second, establishing a questionnaire that was both dependable and accurate could be an issue. Lastly, I would only get a view at what those in the group went through.
Ethically, I would run into a problem of confidentiality and making sure all of the questionnaires were kept secret and those taking them were offered secrecy. Anyone who take part in the activity would be able to eliminate themselves from the research if they wanted to and if they left the documents it would be destroyed. I would maintain their best interest and would be real and honest with them regarding what the study is being used for and why it was being done. Still, because there isn’t a personal relationship but just general on this could be difficult to prove and cause doubt and that could be an ethical crisis.

There are many different types of research studies, and the type of study that is done depends very much on the research question. Some studies demand strictly numerical data, such as a comparison of GPA among different college majors or weight loss among different types of eating programs. Others require more in-depth data, like interview responses. Review of Related Literature
At this point you should make an initial foray into the professional literature, the formal record of other people’s experiences, to try to better understand the problem on which you are focusing. The literature may suggest other ways of looking at your problem and help you to identify potential promising practices that you might use in your classroom to correct the problem. To borrow the words of Kemmis (1988), “Can existing research throw any light on your situation and help you see it more clearly?” (p. 55).
Reviewing the literature is a valuable contribution to the action research process that could actually save you time. Often, teacher researchers think that they know what their problem is but become stymied in the process because they weren’t really sure what they were asking. Taking time to immerse yourself in the literature allows you to reflect on your own problems through someone else’s lens. You can locate yourself within the research literature and find support for what you are doing or be challenged by what other researchers have done and how they have tackled a particular problem.
At the end of the process, you ought to be informed enough about the literature that you could talk to colleagues about the major themes that emerged. Similarly, you should be able to talk about “promising practices” that were discussed.
Sometimes, teacher researchers will claim that they cannot find any published research related to their area of focus. This invariably leads to questions of relevance and importance. After all, if nobody else has researched the problem, perhaps it is not worthy of investigation! However, as the following personal and serious illustration demonstrates, lack of published research on a topic does not mean that the topic is not important. About 15 years ago my son, who was five years old at the time, inexplicably began to pass blood in his urine—a pretty scary sight for any parent. After many invasive medical tests over a six-month period, we finally opted for a procedure that required general anesthesia in order to determine the cause of the blood. The surgeon emerged from the operating room and pronounced, “I have some good news, and I have some bad news!” The good news was that the surgeon was able to diagnose the cause of the internal bleeding—a rare, benign, and non-life-threatening condition called trigonitis. The bad news was that the surgeon was unable to tell us why our son had developed the condition or how to treat it! I was shocked at this revelation from the surgeon, a pediatric urology specialist. How could my son be bleeding internally and there not be a medical explanation? The surgeon responded that, because the condition was rare, benign, and non-life-threatening, it simply did not warrant research! My point here is not to be melodramatic but rather to make a case for the importance of your own research, regardless of whether it has been researched (and published) by other pr ...

Authors’ Claims
In the introduction, the authors review how children who are prenatally exposed to alcohol and other drugs delays or effect their learning and behavoiral problems by focusing on their abilities to shifting tasks, maintaining attention, and manipulating information based off memory. They believed that if educators have a better understanding of the nature of the disorder, they may be prone to selecting more effective classroom interventions that aligns with the deficits of those students based off the various risk factors related the prenatal exposure to drugs and/or alcohol.

Introduction
Autism researchers continue to grapple with activities that best serve the purpose of fostering positive interpersonal relationships for children with autism. Children have benefited from therapy sessions that provide ongoing activities to aid their ability to engage in healthy social interactions. However, less is known about how K–12 schools might implement programs for this group of individuals to provide additional opportunities for growth, or even if and how school programs would be of assistance in the end. There is a gap in understanding the possibilities of implementing such programs in schools to foster the social and mental health of children with autism. The six articles I selected for this assignment present research on different types of therapeutic programs that have been used to promote social interactions in children with autism.

Wimpory, D. C., & Nash, S. (1999). Musical interaction therapy – therapeutic play for children with autism. Child Language and Teaching Therapy, 15(1), 17–28. https://doi.org/10.1177/026565909901500103
Wimpory and Nash provided a case study
for implementing music interaction therapy as part of play therapy aimed at cultivating communication skills in infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers based their argument on films taken of play-based therapy sessions that introduced music interaction therapy. To assess the success of music play, Wimpory and Nash filmed the follow-up play-based interaction between the parent and the child. The follow-up interactions revealed that 20 months after the introduction of music play, the child developed prolonged playful interaction with both the psychologist and the parent. The follow-up films also revealed that the child initiated spontaneously pretend play during these later sessions. After the introduction of music, the child began to develop appropriate language skills.
Since the publication date for this case study is 1999, the results are dated. Although this study found that music interaction therapy is useful, emerging research in the field has undoubtedly changed in the time since this article was published. Wimpory and Nash wrote this article for a specific audience, including psychologists and researchers working with infants diagnosed with ASD. Their focus means that others beyond these fields may not find the findings applicable to their work.

1. What is your research question? My research question for this study is, what is the relationship between peer pressure and underage drinking?

For this study I think I would use about 200 students from 4 different schools in the same general area. I would get 25 students from each school, my inclusion characteristics would be female and male students ages 10-20, different social groups, grades levels, and those who have had an alcoholic drink. Some Exclusion characteristics would be kids who are too old, homeschooled, or have never had a drink. The sample for this study needs to be diverse because I don’t believe one could get an accurate reading and or estimation of which students are under the influence and which aren’t without a large population of samples. The samples do not need to be completely diverse however because I am still looking for a certain type of person in a limited group.
4. What sampling technique will be used to collect your sample? What population does your sample generalize to? The sampling technique which will be used to collect my sample isconvenience sampling. Convenience sampling is a non-probability statistical method of drawingrepresentativedata by selecting people because of the ease of their volunteering or selecting units because of their availability or easy access. Convenience sampling is limited when generalizing. Since the sample is not representative of the population, the results of the study cannot speak for the entire population. This results to a low external validity of the study.

As a social science student, it is vitally important that you become an educated consumer of social science research, even if you never get to conduct an actual research study.
You need to have a basic understanding of the steps in the scientific process, a familiarity with commonly used social science research designs and methods, and a knowledge of procedures for collecting and analyzing social science data.
This module provides very basic information about these topics. It addresses the following subjects:

The scientific method is a form of inquiry that was originally developed to answer questions in the natural sciences. The scientific method uses systematic observation and measurement to confirm or disconfirm hypotheses that most often are derived from underlying theories.
When a hypothesis is confirmed, it lends support to the underlying theory. When it is not confirmed, researchers must reformulate the theory and come up with other explanations. Scientists share their findings by presenting at conferences or publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Sharing results with the research world is an important part of the scientific method because science is an iterative activity.
As social scientists, we have a great challenge. Because we cannot exert complete control over human behavior, it is not possible to conduct true experiments. Real life cannot be captured in a lab, and human behavior cannot be explained by one or even two causes. This makes it difficult to determine "cause and effect." For example, if we are interested in knowing why poor people have compromised health outcomes, we would need to account for an impossibly large number of factors or variables such as race, ethnicity, genetic markers, income, education level, access to health care services, and living conditions.

The use of the scientific method allows researchers to develop explanations of social science phenomena. The steps of the research process are explained from a psychological perspective in this tutorial (Bradley, 2000).
Step 1: Make an Observation
The starting place for any research study is an observation (idea) regarding a topic of interest to you, the researcher. It may come from a conversation with a friend, a book or television program, or the conclusion of a related research project. All that is needed at this point is your interest in pursuing the topic further.

Most people at some point in their life have worked in the service industry. This particular
industry can be quite satisfying whether it be working in fine dining, as a cocktail waitress, or at a local
diner, but for Emily Raine, who had done all of these things, the only place she ever felt “whipped” was
working as a barista at one of largest specialty coffee chains in the world (358). Raine is bothered by
how the café industry has set up the impersonal server/customer relationship and feels the best way to
solve the issue is be to “be rude” (365). In 2005, Raine expanded in an essay that appeared in the
online journal, Bad Subjects, on her frustration within the service industry and what good service really
means.
Good service in the coffee industry does not require much skill these days. Most people are
usually talking on their cell phone while ordering their daily coffee and pastry while also paying and then
out as fast as they walked into the café probably not even noticing or acknowledging any interaction
with the people serving. The coffee sector has recognized this and has set up the counters as linear
coffee bars that act the same as an assembly line. The workers are trained and assigned specific jobs in
the coffee preparing process, such as taking the order, handling the money, making the drink, to
delivery. This makes the interaction with the customer very limited, mostly just seconds. This is where
Raine feels some of the problem with the customer and server interaction. Although this is the most
effective and efficient way of working, Raine describes productive work as “dreary and repetitive” (359).
Since the 1960’s companies have been branding themselves with the quality of having “good
service” distinguishing them from the rest of the competition. Raines explains that in good service there
is an exchange between two parties: “the ‘we’ that gladly serves and the ‘you’ that happily receives,”
but also a third party, the boss, which is the ultimate decider on exactly what good service will be (360).
Companies in the service industry must market their products on servers’ friendliness; therefore
it is monitored and controlled from the people on top. Raine notes that cafés “layouts and management
styles” help create a cozy atmosphere that plays a factor in good service, but in a way that will not
disrupt the output (361). In Raine’s essay, she gives the example of an employee Starbucks has
branded; “The happy, wholesome perfume-free barista” (361). She points out that the company offers
workers stock options, health insurance, dental plans, as well as other perks of discounts and giveaways,
while also using moving personal accounts from workers who “never deemed corporate America could
care so much” (362). Raines also adds that the company does not give into unionization and although

1. Rectifiers are electrical devices that convert an AC supply into a DC output through a process known as rectification. The theory of rectification has been around for over one hundred years, when early discoveries uncovered the unidirectional current flow (polarity dependent) in vacuum valves and crystal (solid state) devices. Autism researchers continue to grapple with activities that best serve the purpose of fostering positive interpersonal relationships for children with autism. Children have benefited from therapy sessions that provide ongoing activities to aid their ability to engage in healthy social interactions. However, less is known about how K–12 schools might implement programs for this group of individuals to provide additional opportunities for growth, or even if and how school programs would be of assistance in the end. There is a gap in understanding the possibilities of implementing such programs in schools to foster the social and mental health of children with autism. The six articles I selected for this assignment present research on different types of therapeutic programs that have been used to promote social interactions in children with autism.

Wimpory and Nash provided a case study
for implementing music interaction therapy as part of play therapy aimed at cultivating communication skills in infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers based their argument on films taken of play-based therapy sessions that introduced music interaction therapy. To assess the success of music play, Wimpory and Nash filmed the follow-up play-based interaction between the parent and the child. The follow-up interactions revealed that 20 months after the introduction of music play, the child developed prolonged playful interaction with both the psychologist and the parent. The follow-up films also revealed that the child initiated spontaneously pretend play during these later sessions. After the introduction of music, the child began to develop appropriate language skills.
Since the publication date for this case study is 1999, the results are dated. Although this study found that music interaction therapy is useful, emerging research in the field has undoubtedly changed in the time since this article was published. Wimpory and Nash wrote this article for a specific audience, including psychologists and researchers working with infants diagnosed with ASD. Their focus means that others beyond these fields may not find the findings applicable to their work.

1. What is your research question? My research question for this study is, what is the relationship between peer pressure and underage drinking?

3. How many participants would you like to use and why? What are the inclusion characteristics, i.e., what must they have in order to be included in your study (for example, gender, diagnosis, age, personality traits, etc.)? Are there any exclusion characteristics, i.e. are there certain characteristics that would exclude them from being in your study? Does the sample need to be diverse? Why or why not? For this study I think I would use about 200 students from 4 different schools in the same general area. I would get 25 students from each school, my inclusion characteristics would be female and male students ages 10-20, different social groups, grades levels, and those who have had an alcoholic drink. Some Exclusion characteristics would be kids who are too old, homeschooled, or have never had a drink. The sample for this study needs to be diverse because I don’t believe one could get an accurate reading and or estimation of which students are under the influence and which aren’t without a large population of samples. The samples do not need to be completely diverse however because I am still looking for a certain type of person in a limited group.
4. What sampling technique will be used to collect your sample? What population does your sample generalize to? The sampling technique which will be used to collect my sample isconvenience sampling. Convenience sampling is a non-probability statistical method of drawingrepresentativedata by selecting people because of the ease of their volunteering or selecting units because of their availability or easy access. Convenience sampling is limited when generalizing. Since the sample is not representative of the population, the results of the study cannot speak for the entire population. This results to a low external validity of the study.

As a social science student, it is vitally important that you become an educated consumer of social science research, even if you never get to conduct an actual research study.
You need to have a basic understanding of the steps in the scientific process, a familiarity with commonly used social science research designs and methods, and a knowledge of procedures for collecting and analyzing social science data.
This module provides very basic information about these topics. It addresses the following subjects:

The scientific method is a form of inquiry that was originally developed to answer questions in the natural sciences. The scientific method uses systematic observation and measurement to confirm or disconfirm hypotheses that most often are derived from underlying theories.
When a hypothesis is confirmed, it lends support to the underlying theory. When it is not confirmed, researchers must reformulate the theory and come up with other explanations. Scientists share their findings by presenting at conferences or publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Sharing results with the research world is an important part of the scientific method because science is an iterative activity.
As social scientists, we have a great challenge. Because we cannot exert complete control over human behavior, it is not possible to conduct true experiments. Real life cannot be captured in a lab, and human behavior cannot be explained by one or even two causes. This makes it difficult to determine "cause and effect." For example, if we are interested in knowing why poor people have compromised health outcomes, we would need to account for an impossibly large number of factors or variables such as race, ethnicity, genetic markers, income, education level, access to health care services, and living conditions.

The use of the scientific method allows researchers to develop explanations of social science phenomena. The steps of the research process are explained from a psychological perspective in this tutorial (Bradley, 2000).
Step 1: Make an Observation
The starting place for any research study is an observation (idea) regarding a topic of interest to you, the researcher. It may come from a conversation with a friend, a book or television program, or the conclusion of a related research project. All that is needed at this point is your interest in pursuing the topic further.
Let's take an example that we will use for all of the steps in the process. You observe that you are able to memorize items such as telephone numbers better when you eat candy. Because of this, you wonder if there is a connection between the primary component of candy (sugar) and memory.

Most people at some point in their life have worked in the service industry. This particular
industry can be quite satisfying whether it be working in fine dining, as a cocktail waitress, or at a local
diner, but for Emily Raine, who had done all of these things, the only place she ever felt “whipped” was
working as a barista at one of largest specialty coffee chains in the world (358). Raine is bothered by
how the café industry has set up the impersonal server/customer relationship and feels the best way to
solve the issue is be to “be rude” (365). In 2005, Raine expanded in an essay that appeared in the
online journal, Bad Subjects, on her frustration within the service industry and what good service really
means.
Good service in the coffee industry does not require much skill these days. Most people are
usually talking on their cell phone while ordering their daily coffee and pastry while also paying and then
out as fast as they walked into the café probably not even noticing or acknowledging any interaction
with the people serving. The coffee sector has recognized this and has set up the counters as linear
coffee bars that act the same as an assembly line. The workers are trained and assigned specific jobs in
the coffee preparing process, such as taking the order, handling the money, making the drink, to
delivery. This makes the interaction with the customer very limited, mostly just seconds. This is where
Raine feels some of the problem with the customer and server interaction. Although this is the most
effective and efficient way of working, Raine describes productive work as “dreary and repetitive” (359).
Since the 1960’s companies have been branding themselves with the quality of having “good
service” distinguishing them from the rest of the competition. Raines explains that in good service there
is an exchange between two parties: “the ‘we’ that gladly serves and the ‘you’ that happily receives,”
but also a third party, the boss, which is the ultimate decider on exactly what good service will be (360).
Companies in the service industry must market their products on servers’ friendliness; therefore
it is monitored and controlled from the people on top. Raine notes that cafés “layouts and management
styles” help create a cozy atmosphere that plays a factor in good service, but in a way that will not
disrupt the output (361). In Raine’s essay, she gives the example of an employee Starbucks has
branded; “The happy, wholesome perfume-free barista” (361). She points out that the company offers
workers stock options, health insurance, dental plans, as well as other perks of discounts and giveaways,
while also using moving personal accounts from workers who “never deemed corporate America could
care so much” (362). Raines also adds that the company does not give into unionization and although
the company pay.

1.1 Introduction
1. Rectifiers are electrical devices that convert an AC supply into a DC output through a process known as rectification. The theory of rectification has been around for over one hundred years, when early discoveries uncovered the unidirectional current flow (polarity dependent) in vacuum valves and crystal (solid state) devices. These devices were known as rectifiers; however the naming convention was changed in 1919 to diode. The name diode was derived from the Greek words ‘dia’ (through) and ‘ode’ (path). Comment by adtaylor: I don’t really think this sort of thing is necessary: the project report is supposed to be on investigating these devices or technology, not its 100 year old history.

The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon an ethical issue that arose in my law firm. The paper discusses what happened, what the ethical issues were, how I felt at the time, how I went about dealing with these ethical issues including what ethical approach I subconsciously took, what caused me to take that approach and what ethical approach I would take if I was in the position again. I conclude with what I learnt from the reflective process.
In 2009 a lady, Fiona, and her grandfather, Paul, attended my law firm. Fiona said Paul and her grandmother, Mary, owned a house. They were worried that Fiona’s mother, Christine, (an apparent drug user) was going to try and force the grandparents into signing the house over to her and then evict the grandparents out of the house.
Fiona indicated they had mutually agreed that to protect the grandparents from the anticipated actions of Christine, the grandparents would gift the house to Fiona. Fiona, as owner of the house and presumably someone, whom Christine couldn’t stand over, would then let them stay in the house until they died.
Fiona told me that Mary was in hospital, very ill and slowly losing her mental capacity. They wanted the transfer of house to take place urgently. Based on what Fiona and Paul said, I drafted the necessary documents and the house was transferred into Fiona’s name.
There were three ethical issues. Firstly, should I accept the word of Fiona that Christine would try to force the grandparents out of the house; after all it could be Fiona herself who was out to deceive her grandparents.
Secondly, should I make enquiries about Mary’s mental capacity, perhaps even attend the hospital? However, as I was told this was an urgent matter, I prepared the documents immediately to be taken to Mary for signing.
Finally, should I have persuaded Fiona to get her own lawyer to avoid any conflict, after all I was there to look after the interests of the grandparents? Technology Based Education: How can theories of learning and/or development be used to guide the use of technology in schools?
Introduction
Twenty first century learning environment is no longer a goal, but an educational reality. We are deep into the midst of a paradigm shift that spans across our entire globe. The technology we live with as a society has exponentially grown at an increasingly rapid rate. This is illustrated from the integration of computers in every facet of our lives. This includes televisions, phones, cars, and even coffee makers which all contain a microprocessor, they all think. Even more startling is how connected we all are. Access to information is available at a finger’s touch. We can connect to people, we can shop, and ask for directions from anywhere at any time. We are tethered to the world by social media such as Facebook. Google has mapped out the entire earth. We can send a text message from the middle of Antarctica. Even more startling is how corporations and the government collects data as they track our ever movement as we go online. All this is reflected upon education, which mirrors this new 21st century society. No longer is the classroom isolated from the world, but it too is connected. Learning technology is critical more than ever because it impacts skills and productivity (Hall, 2011) for both the student and the teacher.
Background
Incorporating technology into the classroom has been around since computers were invented, but it has been only recently been the norm in the last few years. This revolution no more pointedly reflected in our education system, than it is today. Johri (2011) states that although digital information technologies in education has become commonplace, there are few guiding frameworks or theories that explains the relationship between technology and learning practices. Bennett and Oliver (2011) share that view. Research has focused on practical implementation versus the theory and application of the technology. They explained once theories are developed, a better understanding of effective technology based pedagogy would occur.
Technology in Education
I believe however, all the theorists play well with technology. Technology is merely a tool. Its strength is the ability to facilitate. John Dewey is a prime example. He believed in “learning by doing”. With an iPad there is an App where by students are able to see the stars and the constellation. With the use of satellites and GPS held within the piece of technology, students are able to view exact locations of stars. Where the iPad is directed in the sky, the stars would be in that location on the handheld screen, no telescope necessary. The students interact with the material to gain knowledge.
This is further illustrated by this second example. The best way to learn about Mayan pyramids is to actually visit one in Central America. With the use of laptops, students can connect to the Discove.

Effect of Technology on Enthusiasm for Learning Science

ABSTRACT
The effect of technology on students’ enthusiasm for learning science (both at school and
away from school) was investigated. Pre- and post-student and parent surveys, student and
parent written comments, and teacher observations were used to record changes in enthusi-
asm for learning science during a six-week study period.
In this study, I investigated how the integration of technology into my middle school
science curriculum would impact my students’ enthusiasm for learning science. Enthusiasm
for learning science can be defined as the students’ eagerness to participate in science activi-
ties in the classroom, as well as away from school. My motivation for focusing on technol-
ogy was twofold. First, I have had an interest in integrating technology into my students’
studies of science for some time. Secondly, the funding for technological equipment and
software recently became available. During the 1993–1994 school year, my school was
awarded a $115,000 incentive grant to purchase equipment and software and to train
teachers in the use of this software and technological equipment. One of the stipulations of
the grant was that the equipment and software must be for student use.
According to Calvert (1994), American education is a system searching for solutions.
Our children drop out, fail to sustain interest in learning, and perform below capacity. Some
have argued that television is the culprit. Others have argued that computers may be the
answer.
Today’s middle school students have grown up in a technological world with television,
electronic toys, video games, VCRs, cellular phones, and more. They are accustomed to
receiving and processing information through multi-sensory sources.
I wanted to bring technology into my classroom and incorporate it into my science
curriculum using multimedia computer presentations. Barbara ten Brink (1993) noted, “. . .
students look to us [teachers] to prepare them for an increasingly technological world.
Fortunately, with videodiscs, we are meeting the challenge by delivering curriculums in
ways that engage, motivate, and thrill our students.” In this study my students had an
opportunity to use assorted multimedia technology as they explored a segment of a middle
school science curriculum.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS
Learning is an extremely complex human process. During my twenty-four years of teaching
I have used many strategies to enhance student learning and to teach new concepts. I am still
not convinced that I thoroughly understand how children learn. Yet, at this point, I do
believe children learn through experiences. They build on past experiences and previous
knowledge to process new concepts. As children redefine old understandings of concepts

Due to a crisis in subprime lending, obtaining a mortgage has become difficult even for
people with solid credit. In a report by the Associated Press (August 25, 2007), sales of
existing homes fell for a 5th consecutive month, while home prices dropped for a record
12th month in July 2007. Mayan Horowitz, a research analyst for QuantExperts, wishes to
study how the mortgage crunch has impacted the once booming market of Florida. He
collects data on the sale price (in $1, 000s) of 25 single-family homes in Fort Myers,
Florida, in January 2007 and collects another sample in July 2007. For a valid
comparison, he samples only three bedroom homes, each with 1,500 square feet or less of
space on a lot size of 10, 000 square feet or less.

The steady stream of dismal housing market statistics lately is a clear indication that the national
real estate market is in a serious crisis. The uncertainty is also forcing lenders to slow down on
their lending, and as a result obtaining a mortgage is becoming increasingly difficult even for
people with solid credit. In light of this situation, Mayan Horowitz conducts a small study to
learn if the national trend also affects the once booming market of Florida by focusing on Fort
Myers, Florida. To see the trend of the housing market over a 6-month period, he obtains price of
25 single family homes in January 2007 and another comparable 25 single family homes in July
2007. Table 1 below shows the most relevant descriptive analysis.
The average home price in January of 2007 was $231, 080 versus $182, 720 in July of the same
year. That is about a 21% drop in the average home price. Also in January, half of the homes
sold for more than $205,000, versus only $180,000 in July (see the median). Since the mean is
more effected by outliers (in this case, a few relatively high prices), the median is an appropriate
measure of central location.
While measures of central location typically represent where the data clusters, these measures do
not relay information about the variability in the data. Both the standard deviation and the
coefficient of variation are higher in January indicating that home prices were more dispersed in
January. Further, while 25% of the houses were sold at the price of $158, 000 or less in Janua.

The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. the Literature Review of our research which includes all the
scholarly articles that we can study during the course of our
research. This will help us to broaden our thinking and help us
to think ideas which we might have missed. Thus conducting a
literature review is an essential part of a research process. It is
also not possible for us to go use the entire article as a part of
our research process or else the essence of our research
questions would get diluted, thus conducting a literature review
should be done with utmost care. We shall take notes from the
different articles we review and include those notes as literature

An article which I reviewed in the course of the study was “Are
Married Parents Really Better for Children? What Research
Says about the Effects of Family Structure on Child well-being”
by Mary Parke. The topic mentioned above and my research
topic is very similar and the main scope of research by Mary
Parke is the effect of family structure on the wellbeing of

child, but also on how the same child lived as an adult and if
the single parenting had any significant impact on the life of the
same child as an adult.
The basic question asked by Mary Parke in her study is “How
the changes in family structure have affected the well being of
children”. The topic is very explicit in nature and clearly states
the possible outcome. There can be only two outcomes for this
research whether the changes in family structure witnessed over
the last few decades have or have not affected the well being of
a child grown up under single parenting.
The major ideas of the study by Mary Parke was that the if
single parenting effects the well being of children, then how can
marriages be made more stronger in order to avoid the effects
single parenting has on the well being of children. The study
also tries to find out the differences between a child who is
raised under two parents and those raised by single parenting. It
also looks at if there exists any significant differences between
the well-being of these two kinds of children.
The study was a descriptive study and was a part of a series of
studies which might help in the formation of a policy on couples
and marriage. The main purpose of the study was to find out
ways to strengthen the marriage. The study can be used to make
inferences about the entire population and thus the outcome.
This type of a study helps to find out a causal relationship. The
effects that single parenting bears on the well being of children.
The method used by the researcher was survey, as the data was
collected with the help of surveys conducted in different parts
of the countries.
3. The data group was mainly children above the age of 14, and
the children who were surveyed included both, those who were
raised under single parenting and those who were raised under
the parents staying together. Another part of people part of the
study was the based on the parents as it was important to find
out the reasons behind separation. A large part of the data was
taken from the data collected by the government agencies.
The findings of the study done by Mary Parke was that single
parenting had significant impact on the well being of a child
and the children those who grow up under the parenting of both
parents staying together were significantly better off than those
growing under single parenting. Children who grow up under
single parenting are found to have achieved lower level of
education, experience health and behavioural issues and even
mental health problems. Thus in short the outcome can be
summarized as those not living with their biological parents are
said to face serious problems.
Thus it is very important to review different studies done in the
past to improve on the research being conducted. It is
imperative to read more than one article to have a better and a
clearer picture and one may need to reread the articles in order
to understand the fine prints of the study and simultaneously
prepare notes for the research. One should make notes of as
much data that is available and then the same notes can be
organized and synthesized and the review can be written. A
literature review summarizes different articles and gives a point
of view about different studies and is organized to communicate
a sense of purpose. One more thing needs to be kept in mind in
using Citations if any line is directly used from any article. The
report should be created in a way such that it is focused on the
research question under consideration.
It is of utmost importance to make sure that the study was
conducted ethically and scientifically otherwise the essence of
conducting the study may get diluted and it may result in an
outcome which may not be correct. Thus, it is very important
that any study conducted should be done in an ethical and
4. scientific manner. This study could have been conducted
unethically by a scientific misconduct. A research can be done
unethically if a research fraud or plagiarism is done. A research
fraud is done by deceptive data or by lying about the data.
Portraying wrong data either done by error or by choice, will
result in making the study an unethical one. Plagiarism is
another source of unethical behaviour thus if any researcher
uses other facts and figures from another study report and does
not cite the source it will result in making the research an
unethical one.
In short we may say that the any research would be considered
to be an unethical if it has bias involved. Another important
factor is that the research should be conducted by a competent
individual because even though the individual may not be
biased but their incompetence may make the research process an
unethical one and the same may not be of any good use to make
inferences. The research could have been conducted in an
unscientific way simply by studying the various works done
already by researchers and without actually getting into the
whole research process. Thus research which is unscientific may
be difficult to prove and also may not give the optimum solution
to the study.

Abstract
The main purpose of Ethnography is to provide a detailed
description and clear understanding on the way of life from the
standpoint of the natives/members/insiders of a community. It
involves a research undertaken when one is residing with the
28. specific research group for a specified period of time. The
population I will be studied is approximately 1200 people and I
will use a random sample. The method to be used is qualitative
data and specifically the use of questionnaires. I will be able to
visit the people in Killen village in Alabama and to interact
with them in friendly way and adapting their way of life. The
type of questions I will ask will vary from one person to the
other. Adults may have difficult questions while children may
have simpler questions about how they feel about their parents.
It is important also to build a good relationship with the
interviewers so as to get the right and relevant information from
them (Wolraich, 2008).
Topic
The topic of the research study will be “How being raised by a
single parent affects children’s development”. This topic is best
in the context of rural areas and may be good in the research.
Introduction
Single parents face a lot of challenges in raising their children
especially in rural areas. Women are mostly faced by the
problem due to poverty. Women are often left by men and have
to take care of their children no matter the circumstances and
thus, results to problems in the development of the child. This
research paper addresses the issues faced by single parents in
Killen village in Alabama City, U.S in raising their children.
This problem has affected the social life of people especially in
their jobs as they keep thinking about the development of the
child as well as how they cope with one parent. Emotion and
pain is the other problem caused by single parenting in the
society. It has affected the whole society in terms of high prices
of living and other essentials (Hauser, 1997).
Literature review
Single parents are not appreciated that much in the society.
People have had many different opinions on this. The
29. development of a child raised by a single parent is very
difficult. They may have questions concerning their other
parents and may affect them psychologically. This may
eventually lead to difficulty in education and may even affect
their future. The study requires a qualitative data with the
following steps:
Preparing for a Field Study:
a. Self Awareness: In case of a field research human and
personal factors play a very crucial role. Self Awareness is an
essential requirement for a field study and the researcher needs
to have the ability to notice minute details in the field and also
have empathy for other people. When preparing for the field
study one should be aware of personal concerns, commitments,
and inner conflicts.
b. Background Investigation: In the initial stages of the research
study we should understand the important concepts, potential
pitfalls, data collection techniques and strategies by reviewing
scholarly literature.
c. Practise Observing and Writing: The success of any field
research depends on the observatory skills of the researcher. It
is very important for a researcher to comprehend situations and
write down those observations.
In the initial stages of research the researcher may have to face
embarrassment, experience discomfort. The researcher may find
it difficult to interact with the participant. This stage is where
he learns the ropes of the study. After the initial discomfort the
researcher should try and normalize the research. In this stage
the different members need to adjust to the study. Once things
are normalized the researcher should build rapport with the
different members of the study and develop a sense of trust with
the members. The researcher should continuously find new
30. areas which he can involve in his research study (Hauser, 1997).
Methodology
I will be conducting a questionnaire each day interviewing one
person. The questionnaire will vary from one corner of the
village to the other. I will interview all the age groups starting
with children to the old people in the village. The size to be
sampled is very random and not specific. Each questionnaire is
to be filled by different people so as to get different views on
the effects of single parenting in the development of a child.
The type of study being used in this context is ethnographic and
assessment will be needed at the end of the questionnaire.
Findings/results
Many people agreed that single parenting affects the
development of children throughout the stages of child
development. Many people in the village are responsible for
their children because the village has not more than 5 single
parents. Women in particular had a very strong point concerning
single parents. Many of them stated that single parenting affects
the habits and behaviour of children. Many of them would feel
neglected and may also develop phobia to people or other
children (McLanahan et al, 1994).
Discussion
Chid development is greatly affected by the status of their
parents. Many interviewed people agreed that the growth of a
child depends on the environment he lives. A child may hear
other children talking about their mothers of fathers yet those
themselves have one parent. Such issues may interfere with the
psychology and the physical being of a child. He/ she may feel
bad about it and may be even embarrassed in front of other
children. Stages of child development start from when they are
born to old age. The findings can impact on creation of policies
and practices that can help in child development. The outcomes
showed that many children raised by single parents suffer the
31. problem of shyness and fear in the community. The findings are
real and justifiable and can be shown by children with single
parents. However, there may be problems still associated with
implementing policies because a body of legislations cannot
govern the lives of every child with single parents (Fetterman,
2010).
Conclusion
The findings concluded that there is actually a big problem of
child development in the area of study, which is Keller village.
I recommend parents to be very cautious when dealing with the
responses and how they treat their children. It is very important
to handle children well in their growth to avoid implications in
the future.
