Milk consumption in Pakistan is 159 liters per person per year, which is among the highest in developing world (FAO). The demand for milk is increasing every year. Moreover, in big cities quality of milk is becoming a primary focus of the consumers. Currently, most of the milk (app. 80-85%) comes from small scale dairy farmers (herd sizer < 30 animals), however, a significant increase in medium and large dairy herds is observed in past decade. The increasing feed and other inputs prices are putting pressure on the dairy producers and a careful assessment of the cost of milk was required. The current survey was conducted in the district Lahore with the 5 different types of producers. We hope that outcomes of this project will be useful for the institutions and private sector to design strategies that will support farmers. We are hopeful that the dairy producers and technical service providers will also find these results interesting and will use them to design there KPIs and targets to improve efficiencies.

Abstract— This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of addition of different levels of phytase containing low phosphorus diets on performance, eggshell quality and bone characteristics in laying Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). In the experiment, a total of 162 7-week-oldlaying Japanese quail were fed two different diets containing 0.33 % available phosphorus (AP, control) and 0.15 % AP supplemented with phytase 0, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 phytase unites/g feed. Each diet was feed to groups having three replicates, each cages nine quail, in completely randomized design. Feed and water supplied for ad-libitum. Light was provided 17 hours daily. Egg production, egg mass, average daily feed consumption, viability, fat-free dried tibia weight were improved, as phytase level increased in the diet. However, final live weight, carcass weight, body weight gain, feed efficiency, tibia ash (%) and deformed egg ratio (%), some eggshell quality parameters measured in eggs collected at the end of the first period, were not affected by treatments. With regard to measured parameters, the responses of laying quail, to the increasing phytase levels, were not linear. The performance and bone parameters of the group fed with 1500 units were very close to that of the control group, even higher than the control group in some traits. Decreasing in shell weight of eggs collected at last three days of the experiment were not prevented any of the phytase levels. At the same period, shell thickness and breaking strength of the eggs of groups fed with 1500 and 2000 units phytase, were significantly lower than that of the control group. Manure ash percentage of phytase added groups were significantly lower than the control group.

Spray dried plasma proteins are a relatively new feed ingredient available to Australian farmers. Sonac Australia (Darling Ingredients) is the only company in Australia currently producing spray dried plasma proteins from a range of species including pigs, cattle and sheep for domestic and export markets. The introduction of spray dried porcine plasma to the pig feed industry in Australia has been a huge nutritional and welfare advantage to the pig industry. Abstract
Lysine frequently is cited as the first-limiting amino acid for cattle diets. Synthetic lysine, while routinely
added to pig diets, is ineffective in fulfilling lysine requirements of cattle due to extensive degradation by
microbes within the rumen. Lysine can be encapsulated with compounds, such as saturated fats, that minimize
degradation by ruminal microbes, thereby assuring that a greater proportion of the amino acid is available for
absorption post-ruminally. The purpose of this experiment was to measure the impact of SafeGain (H.J. Baker
& Bro. Inc., Little Rock, AR), an encapsulated form of lysine sulfate, on rate of gain and feed efficiency in
backgrounding cattle.

Introduction
Lysine frequently is cited as the first-limiting amino acid for cattle diets. Synthetic
lysine, while routinely added to pig diets, is ineffective in fulfilling lysine requirements
of cattle due to extensive degradation by microbes within the rumen. Lysine can be
encapsulated with compounds, such as saturated fats, that minimize degradation by
ruminal microbes, thereby assuring that a greater proportion of the amino acid is avail-
able for absorption post-ruminally. The purpose of this experiment was to measure the
impact of SafeGain (H.J. Baker & Bro. Inc., Little Rock, AR), an encapsulated form of
lysine sulfate, on rate of gain and feed efficiency in backgrounding cattle.

Experimental Procedures
A total of 448 crossbred heifers (632 ± 31 lb initial body weight) were used in a
112-d growth trial. Heifers were blocked by body weight and randomly allotted to
64 concrete-surfaced pens, with seven animals assigned to each pen. The study was
conducted as a randomized complete block design with four dietary treatments and 16
replications per treatment. The experimental diets consisted of 0, 15, 30, or 45 grams
per animal daily of SafeGain. SafeGain was incorporated directly into the total mixed
ration (Table 1). All diets were fed ad libitum once daily for a period of 112 days. The
experiment started July 30 when animals were implanted with Component® TE-200
with Tylan® (Elanco Animal Health, Indianapolis, IN), weighed, and randomly assigned
to pens. Animals were weighed after 112 days; average daily gain, dry matter intake, and
feed efficiency were determined for each pen. Data were analyzed as a mixed model
using diet as the fixed effect, block as the random effect, and feedlot pen as the experi-
mental unit. Linear and quadratic contrasts were used to evaluate effects of SafeGain on
growth characteristics of heifers.
Results and Discussion
Growth performance of heifers is summarized in Table 2. Average daily feed intake
decreased linearly (P = 0.04) with each incremental addition of SafeGain, decreasing by
nearly 4% with the highest concentration of SafeGain when compared to the Control

group with no SafeGain. In spite of the decreased feed intake, average daily gain
improved linearly with addition of SafeGain (P = 0.05). Feed efficiency also improved
linearly (P < 0.0001) with increased SafeGain levels in the diet. Compared to cattle fed
the control diet without added lysine, efficiencies improved by 5.3, 5.0, and 8.3% for
cattle fed 15, 30, and 45 grams per day of SafeGain, respectively. In conclusion, addition
of SafeGain, a ruminally protected lysine source, is an effective strategy for improving
gain and feed efficiency of backgrounding cattle.
Implications
Average daily gain and feed efficiency of backgrounding cattle were improved with the
addition of SafeGain, indicating that lysine was a limiting nutrient under conditions of
our experiment.
