Malic acid is naturally found in forages and can benefit dairy cows when supplemented. Studies show malic acid can improve rumen fermentation by increasing propionate production and decreasing methane. In vivo studies on the effects of malic acid supplementation on dairy cow performance have found both increased milk yield and no significant effects. The response seems to depend on factors like the basal diet, forage type, and malic acid dose. More research is still needed to determine the ideal malic acid supplementation level for dairy cows.
