Agreeing Persistent Keystone Elements: planning for Geelong & MelbourneTony Smith
Been going to prepare this for a while, then volunteered a half baked attempt at Planning Camp Melbourne, so really needed to get together my thoughts on why Geelong and Melbourne planning can no longer be separated and potential keystone elements to frame their joint planning.
The original Holsopple Station was built in 1880 and served the community for 60 years until closing in the 1970s. It sat empty for years before being donated to the community on the condition it be moved off railroad property. Volunteers were able to move the station 20 feet to a new foundation. After years of deterioration, a restoration effort began in 1994 involving local volunteers and students rebuilding elements like the bay windows and doors. Through grants and donations, the exterior and interior were restored, with work like repainting, new roofing, and reconstructing the freight room floor. The long restoration process brought the historic station back to its former use.
The document summarizes plans to improve light rail efficiency in preparation for a new 49ers stadium. Phase I improvements will expand express service and establish new routes. This includes turning back Winchester service in downtown San Jose. A preferred improvement is installing a new run-around track in the 2nd Street bus lane to allow trains to switch tracks without delaying service. Consultation with the city aims to support improvements to St. James Park near the track, according to the park's master plan.
Sierra Club MSASP ltr. city council 1 22-16Adina Levin
The Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter provides comments on the proposed Millbrae Station Area Specific Plan (MSASP). While they support higher density development near transit, they have several concerns about the plan including lack of pedestrian and bike safety, unsafe bike access on El Camino Real, and prioritizing auto traffic over other modes of transportation. They also note the plan includes too much parking and its commitment to affordable housing is weak. They ask the City Council to reconsider these issues to ensure the success of the transit-oriented development envisioned in the MSASP.

Newington Road Pedestrian Bridge Replacement Project June 2014Fairfax County
The Newington Road Pedestrian Bridge in Lorton, Virginia was structurally damaged and needed replacement. The project involved removing the old bridge and lifting in a new bridge matching the existing abutments and anchor bolt pattern. This required closing Newington Road and detouring traffic, notifying residents, and using cranes to lift the old and new bridges over power lines in approximately 1.5 hours with minimal disruption. The replacement bridge project was paired with another nearby to get a more cost effective bid.

This document presents an investment thesis for Alon USA Energy (ALJ). It argues that ALJ is undervalued based on intrinsic and relative valuation. As a master limited partnership (MLP), ALJ benefits from tax advantages. Its Big Spring refinery is strategically positioned to take advantage of inexpensive sour crude. While ALJ's largest customer and supplier poses a risk, that risk is mitigated by factors such as the customer being owned by Goldman Sachs. Comparable company analysis and a discounted cash flow model imply that ALJ is undervalued by 46% at its current price.
Desalination is a process that removes salt from seawater to produce fresh water. It involves reverse osmosis, where high pressure is used to force seawater through a semi-permeable membrane that allows water molecules but not salt molecules to pass through. This process will be used at Victoria's new desalination plant to produce fresh water for Melbourne and surrounding areas, providing a reliable source of drinking water even during drought conditions. The plant intakes seawater, filters it, and uses reverse osmosis membranes to separate fresh water from salt water concentrate, which is returned to the ocean.
The documentary "Blackfish" scared investors but not theme park customers. While SeaWorld's stock price dropped 40% after the film, theme park attendance only declined slightly and has since stabilized. Cheap airline tickets from low oil prices are also driving more vacation travel. The research team recommends a long position on SeaWorld with a target price of $28, a 40% increase, as the negative effects of "Blackfish" appear priced into the stock but not reflected in customer behavior.
This document provides an investment analysis on Associated British Foods (ABF), a food company with a fast-growing clothing retail division called Primark. The analysis argues that Primark's value is underappreciated by food analysts covering ABF and should be priced similarly to mature clothing retail peers. As Primark expands internationally, especially into the US, its contribution to ABF's earnings will grow significantly, and coverage should transition from food analysts to retail analysts who can properly value the business. Financial projections show Primark driving the majority of ABF's growth over the next decade as it expands its store base internationally.

The document summarizes the development of an Aimsun hybrid transport model of the Parkville area in Melbourne to analyze the impacts of the Metro Tunnel Project. The model combined microsimulation of traffic around the Haymarket Roundabout with demand matrices from a regional transport model. It was used to test construction closure scenarios in 2021 and legacy scenarios after completion in 2031. Key findings included increased congestion during construction closures of Grattan Street and potential mitigation strategies. Legacy scenarios also showed congestion increases which could be addressed with intersection modifications. The hybrid approach allowed efficient testing of options.

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services rehabilitated 13 county roadways in 2017. The projects involved milling and paving surfaces, base improvements, sidewalk and curb repairs, and ADA upgrades. The roads are in the Lee, Mason, Mount Vernon, Providence, and Springfield districts. Project locations included service drives along major roads and residential streets. Before and after photos show the improved conditions of paved surfaces and infrastructure after rehabilitation.
The document provides a history of Hawne Basin and Coombeswood Canal Trust from 1798 to 2008. It details key dates and events including:
- The original basin was built in the early 1800s to serve Hawne Colliery.
- In 1898, the basin was enlarged and given railway access and sidings when a rail branch from Halesowen station to Hawne Basin was constructed.
- By the 1960s, boat traffic and the railway had ceased. In the 1970s, local waterways groups worked to preserve the basin, leading to the formation of Coombeswood Canal Trust in 1977.
- Over the decades, the trust expanded the moorings and facilities
The document outlines plans to reconnect Glasgow with the River Clyde through new developments, activities, and infrastructure improvements. Key projects include regenerating areas like Oatlands and Tradeston, promoting the river for recreation like rowing, and improving access through new bridges and walkways to link both sides of the river and better connect communities to the waterfront. The overall goal is to recognize the river's importance and enhance it as a positive asset for the city.
The Southern Delivery System (SDS) is a 50-mile pipeline project in Colorado that will provide water from the Arkansas River to Colorado Springs and other communities. Construction of the pipeline involved overcoming geological and logistical challenges, including tunneling under a railroad and allowing ATV access during construction through designated crossings. Community engagement efforts like ongoing resident communication helped mitigate disruption from the 6.4-mile section that passed through 125 residential yards. The project is expected to come in under its nearly $1 billion budget due to contracting the pipeline in sections to encourage competitive bidding.
