A cruel king had stolen the throne and killed his brother's sons. When he learned his brother's daughter had twins by the god Mars, he ordered them thrown in the river to drown. However, the babies were saved and fed by a she-wolf and later found by a shepherd who raised them. The twins, Romulus and Remus, later built a city on the banks of the River Tiber but quarreled over who should rule. Romulus ended up killing Remus to become the sole king and namesake of the city of Rome.
