Romulus and Remus were twin brothers whose parents were gods. They were set adrift as infants but survived, grew up, and decided to found a new city. However, they could not agree on who should rule, and Romulus killed Remus and became the first king of Rome. The city of Rome took its name from Romulus. Etruscan kings then ruled Rome for some time. The Roman Senate developed as an advisory council and gained power after the overthrow of the monarchy.
