Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
 Deforestation: 12 million ha (30 million acres) of moist
tropical forest are cleared every year [1 billion acres (400 million
ha.) has been cleared since 1972].
 GHG Emissions: Recent research shows deforestation/ forest
degradation is responsible for 12-15% of global annual
greenhouse gas emissions.
 One Approach: To reducing emissions from deforestation and forest
degradation (REDD) is to monetize the value of standing forest
(Forest Carbon Credits) as an alternative to destructive uses of the
forest.
Forest Carbon Credits Should be
• Environmentally Positive
o Preserving Forests
o Sustaining Ecosystems
o Conserving Species
• Socio-economically and Culturally Beneficial
o Providing Alternative Incomes
o Improving Health and Well-being
o Sustaining Traditional Practices
• Financially Sound
o Accounting Accurately for Reduced Emissions
o Protecting Permanently against Reversals
o Promoting Transparency
A New Standard to
Reduce Tree Biomass
Removal
The RFS Development Team
• Environmental Trust Funds
Bolivia (PUMA) Brazil (Funbio)
Colombia (Fondo Acción Ambiental)
Ecuador (FAN) Peru (Profonanpe)
• Columbia University : CEES
• Outside Experts
o Core Team (International)
o Local Counterparts (Amazon Countries)
o Independent Reviewers (International)
World’s First Standard
• Fully integrated
• Built from the Ground Up
• Specifically for Avoided Deforestation
Fully Integrated
• Carbon Content –Tree Biomass
o Standing Trees, root, and litter
• Biodiversity
o Ecosystem, Species and Populations
• Socio-cultural/Socio-economic
o Health, Education, Household Economy
Inclusive and Participatory
• De jure rights holders
o Legal Title or Equivalent
• De facto rights holders
o Customary Forest Dwellers or Users
• Other stakeholders
o Governmental Authorities
o Project Proponents/ Developers
• Additionality
o Project and Emissions additionality
• Leakage
o Market and Activity leakage
• Permanence
oRights Holder Buy-in and Commitment & QOL improvement
oIncentivize Forest Conservation (not delayed removal)
oSufficient Reserves to cover reversals

Societal Outreach
Research Center for Climate Change
University of Indonesia
By 2014: a multi-level outreach program to
reach Indonesians at all levels of society,
across different scales and in different ways.
Particular efforts will be made to include
indigenous communities, small holders,
other traditional forest users.
Academic Programs
• Specialized courses that draw upon combined
expertise found at RCCC-UI, and CEES-CU.
• MS degree that meets the requirements of the
UI Administration and MOEC
• Shared Expertise UI faculty and other
international experts exchange knowledge to
mutually build capacity for climate change
mitigation.
Research Center for Climate Change
University of Indonesia
Professional Certificate
8-week program for members of Government,
Non-profit, and Private Sectors to understand
and implement forest conservation projects,
including innovative finance mechanisms for
Sustainable Forest management such as the
Rainforest Standard.
Research Center for Climate Change
University of Indonesia
Launch September 2013
Essential Knowledge and Skills
• Background on climate change and
drivers of deforestation
• Technical, political, financial, social,
legal and environmental issues
related to sustainable forestry
financing
• Basic scientific survey and
monitoring strategies to assess
biodiversity, forest cover, and
carbon stock
Increased capacity in the Government,
Non-Profit, and Private sectors
for implementing
credible, sustainable, socially responsible
forest conservation activities and financing systems
in Indonesia

  • 6. Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation  Deforestation: 12 million ha (30 million acres) of moist tropical forest are cleared every year [1 billion acres (400 million ha.) has been cleared since 1972].  GHG Emissions: Recent research shows deforestation/ forest degradation is responsible for 12-15% of global annual greenhouse gas emissions.  One Approach: To reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is to monetize the value of standing forest (Forest Carbon Credits) as an alternative to destructive uses of the forest.
  • 7. Forest Carbon Credits Should be • Environmentally Positive o Preserving Forests o Sustaining Ecosystems o Conserving Species • Socio-economically and Culturally Beneficial o Providing Alternative Incomes o Improving Health and Well-being o Sustaining Traditional Practices • Financially Sound o Accounting Accurately for Reduced Emissions o Protecting Permanently against Reversals o Promoting Transparency

  • 11. Fully Integrated • Carbon Content –Tree Biomass o Standing Trees, root, and litter • Biodiversity o Ecosystem, Species and Populations • Socio-cultural/Socio-economic o Health, Education, Household Economy
  • 12. Inclusive and Participatory • De jure rights holders o Legal Title or Equivalent • De facto rights holders o Customary Forest Dwellers or Users • Other stakeholders o Governmental Authorities o Project Proponents/ Developers
  • 13. • Additionality o Project and Emissions additionality • Leakage o Market and Activity leakage • Permanence oRights Holder Buy-in and Commitment & QOL improvement oIncentivize Forest Conservation (not delayed removal) oSufficient Reserves to cover reversals
