1. William Hayward Pickering
A New Zealand born rocket scientist.
24 December 1910 - 15 March 2004
(aged 93)

2. Growing up
William Pickering grew up in Wellington. He was born on the 24 December 1910.
He attended
Havelock school in and Wellington College.

3. William Pickering's
Work
In 1958 he led a team of people who concentrated on launching NASA's first unmanned space flight.
Under his direction they flew pioneer missions as well as surveyor missions to the moon and several
flyby's of Venus and Mars.
On one of the explorer lll missions they discovered a radiation belt around earth.

4. RETIREMENT
He retired in 1976.
He became a patron on the only school based research group "The Nexus Research", from
1999 until his death in 2004. He was also patron of the New Zealand Space flight association.

1965 - The Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand Honorary Fellowship
He has two New Zealand roads named after him, 1 in Auckland and 1 in Christchurch.
