David Hockney was part of the pop-art
movement in the 1960s’ and is said to be one of
the most influential British artists in the twentieth
century

2. He was first educated at Wellington Primary School. He
then went on to Bradford Grammar School then the
Bradford College and then finally finished at the Royal
College of Art, where he was featured in the exhibition
of Young Contemporaries. David Hockney visited New
York in 1963 and met Andy Warhol, he then travelled to
California and lived there for many years. This inspired
him to make a series of paintings of swimming pools in
Los Angeles. David Hockney also made portraits and
prints of friends. He did some stage designs for the
Royal Court Theatre, the Glyndebourne, La Scala and the
Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

David Hockney graduated from the Royal College of Art
with a gold medal. He won the Junior Section Prize in
the John Moores exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery,
Liverpool in 1961. At the Paris Biennale he wins the
Third Graphic Prize. David Hockney’s “Pictures with
People” was placed at the John Kasmin’s Gallery and it
was a sell out.

David Hockney bases alot of his work on his
family and friends, taking zoomed in images
of their faces and then putting them all
together to make a much bigger picture and
depth. He also focuses on objects and
places that he has visited, and does the
same thing, taking many tiny pictures and
then putting them together to create the
abstract gridded texture that you can see
here in his photo collages. However David
Hockney is not most known for his
photography, he is most well known for his
paintings of swimming pools.
