To help practitioners integrate skills into the teaching of core academic subjects, the
Partnership has developed a unified, collective vision for learning known as the
Framework for 21st Century Learning. This Framework describes the skills, knowledge
and expertise students must master to succeed in work and life; it is a blend of content
knowledge, specific skills, expertise and literacies.
Every 21st century skills implementation requires the development of core academic
subject knowledge and understanding among all students. Those who can think critically
and communicate effectively must build on a base of core academic subject knowledge.
Within the context of core knowledge instruction, students must also learn the
essential skills for success in today’s world, such as critical thinking, problem
solving, communication and collaboration.
When a school or district builds on this foundation, combining the entire Framework with
the necessary support systems—standards, assessments, curriculum and instruction,
professional development and learning environments—students are more engaged in the
learning process and graduate better prepared to thrive in today’s global economy.
While the graphic represents each element distinctly for descriptive purposes,
the Partnership views all the components as fully interconnected in the process
of 21st century teaching and learning.

This paper, presented at the UK and Ireland Engineering Education Research Network's 6th Annual Symposium (Portsmouth, 1-2 November 2018), reports action research exploring the problem of developing intellectual ability – to deploy knowledge in analysis, create solutions, and exercise judgement – which represents the essence of engineering but cannot be directly taught. Having rejected existing tools for student engagement as too passive or instrumental, we present alternative tools we have developed with the aims of (1) uncovering how students integrate their learning, (2) engaging students as true collaborators in learning design. Findings are grouped into two areas: the kinds of collaboration processes that are most amenable to achieving real insight into how students integrate and mobilise their learning; and the second group presents what we have uncovered about what contemporary engineering students are looking for in their education.

Embedding SoTL in an institution does not happen overnight. Neither does the alignment of SoTL with principles of diversity and inclusivity happen by chance. This panel discussion will share the story of how faculty and staff at University College Cork (UCC) Ireland have worked together to embed SoTL and embrace principles of diversity and inclusion as a SoTL lever. We have been working with SoTL principles for over twenty years and have developed a number of long-term initiatives that have brought about transformational change at course, program, disciplinary and institutional levels, while embracing principles of diversity and inclusivity.
Three panelists address the following questions in an Irish university context:
(i) How can we use professional development (CPD) to spearhead pedagogical, disciplinary and institutional transformation?
(ii) How can we embed diversity and inclusion at the level of the curriculum in sustainable and effective ways to maximize staff and student learning? LL
(iii) How can we ensure that there is sustained commitment at the institutional level towards supporting and embedding inclusive principles across the university and beyond?
(iv) How does a SoTL perspective pervade and inform these questions? At the pedagogical and curriculum levels, for example, we have embraced principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to inform and advance diverse and inclusive practice.
This is achieved in a number of ways:
(i) through the rolling out a suite of online accredited programmes for faculty in the field of teaching and learning in higher education;
(ii) through the option to take a digital badge in UDL;
(iii) through a generic series of virtual and face to face CPD sessions for faculty and staff. All of these initiatives are run by the Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) which is dynamically related to the Colleges and Faculties of the university, through its champions and teaching fellows. We have also pursued alignment at the institutional level through ensuring that teaching and learning remains a central tenet of the Strategic Plan of the university. CIRTL is also part of a wider ambit that includes collaboration with other centres, such as Digital Education, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Inclusive UCC. Each panelist will address one of the questions above, while all will address the SoTL imperative.

Abstract:
The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering is a new HEI. We’re a positive disrupter, challenging norms in university-level education by using and testing innovative new approaches, particularly in learning, teaching and widening access, to address the shortfall in numbers of engineering graduates in the UK. Part of NMITE’s mission is to share good practice and learning with the sector. This workshop will provide an overview of NMITE’s pedagogical innovations, and will facilitate a discussion with peers about the enablers and barriers to innovation and ways to overcome them. The session will facilitate good practice sharing and the chance for you to seek peer support and learn from new models to address challenges within your own institution. It will thus empower you to act as a more effective change agent, driving forward your NTF/CATE innovative practice. We will conclude with an opportunity for colleagues to feed into a QAA enhancement project, which the presenters are currently leading, to explore the interaction of innovation and quality assurance in HE.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

3. Context: The changing UK HE landscape
● Increasing numbers and diversity of students entering HE
● Increasing interest from Employers to have a greater influence on the
learning and development of the graduates
● Re-evaluation of the role of universities:
○ Office for Students
○ Government seeking ‘return on investment’ (Lebeau et al 2012; HM Government
2017, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, 2017)
○ Plans for increased spending on R&D, but with large contribution from private
sector – requiring more KE activity (Royal Society 2019)
○ Scrutiny of the value of education provided to students, especially in terms of
employability and work-readiness (Britton et al 2020)
● Increased Government scrutiny through metricisation: REF, TEF and KEF.
4. Context: Enterprise & entrepreneurship
education
● Enterprise is a set of capabilities that enable individuals to spot
opportunities, generate ideas, and do something about them. Enterprising
people get things done and make things happen
● Increased interest in enterprise education (Hytti & O’Gorman 2004):
○ HEIs developing opportunities to develop enterprise capabilities in students –
see, seize and respond positively to opportunities, and make ideas happen
(Pittaway & Hannon 2008)
○ Formation of Enterprise Educators UK in 2007
○ THE Entrepreneurial University of the Year Award since 2008
● But, not yet mainstream – not a fundamental part of HE alongside, e.g.
communication, numeracy and literacy
○ Enterprise educators report difficulty in gaining traction, or effecting cultural

Leadership Academy
● SELA develops selected, high-potential engineering undergraduate students
to become leaders who create positive impact in research and industry
● 2-year programme, delivered in close collaboration with industry
● Students complete real projects to deliver real value, whilst testing and
developing their skills:
○ E.g. Industry 4.0 adoption – modernisation in SME manufacturing:
■ Students developed low budget entry points to digital technologies
■ Students gain leadership capability, and sense of their agency
■ New research projects have been established and funded
■ Students were able to effectively mediate the knowledge gradient for KE
■ Outcomes and outputs captured and used widely across the institution for
metrics.
8. Case Study 2: LJMU Leadership Module
● The Professional and Leadership skills module a common core module for
MSc Programmes in Engineering at LJMU.
● Varied learning and teaching (L&A) methods including student-led group
discussions and panel sessions, inverted classroom activity, creativity,
games based team activity, and peer evaluation.
● Successful outcomes: employment, industrial placement and knowledge
exchange through group design projects
● Feedback from employers hosting industry placement and group design
project:
○ “they (students) have demonstrated extraordinary ability to integrate
within the teams, generate creative ideas as potential solutions for
industrial challenges, and evaluate them.”
