This short film follows the conventions of a psychological thriller/horror genre. It begins with an introduction showing a car crash and establishing the character of Emily who was critically injured. After her death and funeral, strange events start occurring involving Emily's stuffed animal. This leads the protagonist, Emily's brother, to believe her spirit has returned. The film builds tension through the use of lighting, music, and jump scares. It climaxes with the brother encountering what appears to be Emily's ghost, establishing that her spirit has not found peace. Overall the short film tells a story of grief and the supernatural through an effective use of cinematic techniques.
Dr Ioannis Pappas, CEO of Green Evolution SA and Secretary of the Hellenic Passive House Institute gave a presentation on the geothermal heat pump applications for low energy buildings: the case of Passive House. In this presentation, a thorough survey of applications for passive cooling in Mediterranean climate was given, together with examples of passive houses around the Mediterranean area.
This is a detailed textual analysis of the short film 'We All Stumble'. The short was created by Michael Marantz for the Robin Hood charity organisation in NYC. This presentation was made for my A2 media coursework blog.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

However,othermessages canbe derivedfromthis,suchasthe lossof two othercharacters,as the

As the lightsflicker, the filmhashitthe disequilibriumof the narrative, thisbecomesclearasthe

The filmthenshowsthe Emily,hisdeadsisterinawhite dress.She lookspale andghost-like.They

This isthe climax of the filmotherknownasthe disequilibrium. The nextshotisfilmedfromatilted
angle andis out of focus.Thisis a fastmovingseriesof clips, whichhighlightsthe panicandtension
of the horror film.Atthispoint, the genre hasbecome verycleartothe filmandthe audience are
hopingfora resolution.
A highangledbird’seye shotisusedalsoasa close up,to show expressionandthe panicthatthe
protagonistisexperiencing.Thisalsovariesthe shotsandthe durationof the shots.Thisisa longer
durationshotthan the previousshots. Thisgivesthe audience abreakbyspacingout the film. This
may alsoindicate there ismore of a climax tocome as the situationmaynothave calmeddownyet.
By varyingthe durationof the clips, the filmspace isnot to slow ortoo fast andcan leave the
audience togetto termsof theiremotionsinrelationtothe film.
The nextclipshowsthe adjustingof the focus.Adjustingthe focusinthe rightwaymeansthe object
closerto the camera showsthe actionismore importanttothe thingbehinditthat if notin focus.By
havingsomethingthatisinfocus,drawsthe audience’sattentionintothatfirst,understandswhatis

pull focus,asthe focusmovesfromone thingto another.Thisisdemonstratedinthisshot,asthe
focusis onthe drawas it ispulledoutandthenfocussesonhisexpression.Thisdeterminesthatthe
audience canfull see the drawbeingpulledoutbefore noticingthe protagonist’s reaction.
As the protagonistgoestosleep, the audience cansee the time passesasthe nextshotis pitch black
meaningitmaybe the middle of the night.Fromwhatseemtobe calmand as the audience thought
that the disequilibriumwasoverandthe returnof Emily’sspirithadgone, avoice appearsand says
“I’m back” thisimmediatelyraisesthe tensionasthe audience will ow expectajumpscare scene of
Emily.However,there isamomentof silence anddarknessbefore anythinghappenedtobuildeven
more tension.
The nextshotshowsthe appearance of the teddy.Thisinstantlyindicatestothe audience that
Emily’sspritisthere inthe roomas the teddyisa representationof her.Thisbuildtensionasthe
audience isnowanticipatingEmily’sarrival. However, the filmluredthe audience intoafalse sense

The nextclipisthe protagonistburningthe teddy.However,thisshow connotesthatbydoingthis,it
isputtinghiminfurtherdangeras he isplacedbehindthe flamesindicatingwhatmighthappenif he

The nextshotis of the house of the protagonist.Thisleadsthe audience tobelieve thatthe
disequilibriumhasbeenresolvedasthe dangerhasbeenpotentiallyremoved.The lightgoesout
whichindicateshe isreadyforbedand to move onfrom thisevent. However, anothertwistoccurs
as, the burntteddyisseeninthe nextshot,whichcoonotesEmily’sprescence,meaningthatthe
familyare possiblystill indanger.Thisgoesagainstthe narrative structure, asthe plotkeepstwisting
and the resolutiondoesnotcome straightaway.Again, the producershave show time passing,by
filminginthe eveningandgettingthe streetlightinshot, toprove thatit islate enoughforthe
streetlightstobe on.
The nextshotis a call to whatlookslike anemergencyservicesradio, inwhicha femal voice explains
“There isan uncontrollable housefire”atthe protagonistshouse.Thisisadifferentwayaround
filmingthissituationsasitisa lowbudgetfilm, theywouldnotbe able toshow a house fire, sothey

insightasto sceneswe maywant to film, asthere maybe thingswe cant actuallyfilmbutwe can still

To furtherrepresentthe house fire,theyhave usedflickeringlightingtorepresentflamesand
orange lightingtorepresentthe ire.The lightisalsoreflectedinthe beardseyes, tomake itlooklike
there isa fire.Asthe shotflashesbackto the bear(whichisa representationof Emily’scharacter) it
connotesor suggeststhatEmily’sspiritmayhave hadsomethingtodowiththe fire as she mayhave
causedit. Which isthenconfirmedwithEmily’svoice oversaying“Now we canbe a familyagain”
the camera pansinto the teddy, whichfitsthe genre of ahorror, as mosthorrors are basedupon
one objectthat maybe the reasonfor the horrificevents. The use of anycameramovementsmakes
the shot more effectiveasitaddssomethingtothe shotand prolongsthe intensity.
