Voice is produced by vibration of the vocal folds or vocal cords. The vocal folds are a pair of pliable shelves of tissue that stretch across the top of the trachea (windpipe). They are enclosed within the thyroid cartilage. The vocal folds, together with the muscles and cartilages that support them, are known as the larynx.
Biologically, the larynx evolved as a valve to protect the airway and lungs. Thus, it is positioned where the airway and the esophagus separate. The vocal folds open to allow breathing and close during swallowing to prevent food from entering into the lungs and during voicing.
Trachea:
A flexible tube also called windpipe.
Extends through the mediastinum and lies anterior to the esophagus and inferior to the larynx.
Cartilage rings help the trachea to remains open at all times.
Bronchus:
The two large tubes that carry air from your windpipe to your lungs.
Left and right main bronchus in each lung.

Lung:
Each lung has a conical shape. Its wide, concave base rests upon the muscular diaphragm.
Its superior part called the apex
Both lungs are supported anteriorly by thoracic wall, laterally, and posteriorly by the rib cage.
Mediastinum
Left lung: divided into 2 lobes by, smaller than the right lung & cardiac notch accommodates the heart
Right lung: divided into 3 lobes by, located more superiorly in the body due to liver on right side
Pleura:
The outer surface of each lung covered by a layer called pleura.
The outer - parietal pleura & the internal - visceral pleura.

Prostheses may be designed in segments or with flexible materials to facilitate handling. Minimally invasive procedures and the use of digital technologies can enhance patient comfort. Education and training for patients on prosthesis care and maintenance are crucial for compliance. Regular follow-up and a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration with other specialists, ensure comprehensive care and improved quality of life for microstomia patients.

- 3. Respiration • Is the life-sustaining process (gases are exchanged between the body and the outside atmosphere). • Respiration is carried out mainly by the respiratory system. • Exchange of gasses takes place within the lungs in the alveoli. 3

Function of the respiratory system • Oxygen supplier: The job of the respiratory system is to keep the body constantly supplied with oxygen. • Elimination: Elimination of carbon dioxide. • Gas exchange: The respiratory system organs oversee the gas exchanges that occur between the blood and the external environment. • Passageway: Passageways that allow air to reach the lungs. • Humidifier: Purify, humidify, and warm incoming air. 4
- 5. Organs of the Respiratory system Upper Respiratory Tract (nose, nasal cavity, sinuses, and pharynx) • • Lower Respiratory Tract (larynx, trachea, bronchial tree, and lungs) 5
- 6. The Nose • The only externally visible part of the respiratory system • Air enters the nose through the external nares (nostrils) • The interior of the nose consists of a nasal cavity divided by a nasal septum 6
- 7. Pharynx and Larynx • Air enters the Pharynx (throat) from the nasal cavity. • The air then passes into the Larynx (voice box) - composed of cartilage. - vocal cords: pairs of membranes stretched across the larynx; their vibration creates sound. 7
- 8. Trachea • Connects with the larynx and is covered by the epiglottis to prevent choking. • The Trachea is kept open by horseshoe rings of cartilage. • Lined with cilia and mucus which trap foreign matter 8
- 9. Bronchi and Bronchioles Bronchi: 2 cartilage ringed tubes that branch off the trachea -Lined with cilia -Entrance way to the lungs Bronchioles: branch off the bronchi -Divide and become smaller, thinner with less cartilage 9
- 10. Alveoli • Tiny air chambers at the end of the bronchioles. • Walls are one cell thick and moist from mucus. • Surrounded by capillaries. • Through the alveoli walls, the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. 10
- 11. lungs • Two organs that remove oxygen from the air and pass it into your blood. • Each lung has a conical shape. Its wide, concave base rests upon the muscular diaphragm • Separated by mediastinum • Enclosed by diaphragm and thoracic cage (ribs) • Right lung has 3 lobes, left lung has 2 lobes 11
- 12. Breathing Phases 1. Inhalation: draws air into the lungs a) Active phase of breathing. b) Ribs are pulled up and out, while the diaphragm is pulled downward • The chest cavity becomes larger. This causes pressure within the chest cavity to decrease which brings air into the lungs forcing them to open. 12
- 13. Breathing Phases 2. Exhalation: allows air out of the lungs a) Passive phase of breathing b) Diaphragm relaxes and moves up. Rib muscles relax causing the ribs to drop. • The chest cavity becomes smaller which increases the pressure inside; this will force air out of the lungs and into the environment 13
