Residual ridge resorption (RRR) is the diminishing of the residual ridge after tooth extraction. It begins within months of extraction and continues long-term. RRR affects both cortical and trabecular bone. Over time, RRR can reduce bone density from dense cortical to fine trabecular bone. RRR occurs at a faster rate in the mandible compared to the maxilla. RRR leads to reduced ridge height and width, loss of sulcus depth and muscle attachment, and changes in facial support and appearance. Microscopically, RRR shows osteoclastic activity on the ridge crest and varying bone density within the ridge. The pathophysiology of RRR involves an imbalance where bone resor
