2. Symbolic Codes
Metal hammer follows the conventions of a heavy metal genre which is the
big bold font and the use of striking colours for its logo:
Also uses explicit pictures which support the idea of heavy metal having no
boundaries.
The clothing which is picked out always reflects the band/artists personality
and theme of what the issue is going to be about , another thing which I
have noticed is that this magazine uses alot of props such a electric
guitars, amplifiers
3. Written Codes
This magazine’s front cover consists of loads of text, cover lines, flashes, sky
lines, hook etc to grantee themselves and audience, because if they do not like
the focus of the magazine issue they have other stuff to read about other than
the band/artist present on the front cover.
The language that this magazine uses varies from formal to informal then again
that depends on the focus of their issue at the time, but overall concentrates
on promoting whatever is on the front cover by using exaggerated language.
Uses load of taboo with in the magazine which shows that it is for a mature
audience.
Mainly uses phrases which pop out and are catchy to sum up what else the
magazine consists of and what the audience can read.
Freebees are also used as a hook and are written in big bold writing so that the
idea of free gifts in very visible and again attracts consumers and a mass
market.
This magazine also calls itself ‘the heavy metal bible’ which then again shows that
people follow the magazine like its a religion , special those who are of the
heavy metal audience.
