Bill Viola: Bill Viola isan artistwhoseart deals with themes around the human experience such as lifeand
death, usually usingduality in his work to juxtaposebetween two themes such as lifeand death or fireand
water. He draws inspiration fromhis work from mystic traditions such as Zen Buddhism, Christian mysticism
and Islamic Sufismwhich is shoed through transcendental qualitiesin his work. His work could be divided into
three diverse types, visual art, conceptual art,and a combination of the two. Critics havesaid thathis
conceptual work is forgettable (James Gardner on Viola’s “The Veiling.”) on its own however when he
combines the two themes, critics havestated they find itwork “impressiveand memorable” (James Gardner
on Viola’s “The Crossing’) He uses ultra-slowmotion in his work which could have been used to give the viewer
some time to find their own meaning in his work and connect to itdeeply. The quality throughout his work
makes the meaning of his pieces obvious which carries on through his work today and brings in mixed reviews
from critics. The obsession with the issues hefaces in his early work such as capturingthe essence of emotion
have continued from the beginningof his work (such as his 1976 work,The Space Between the Teeth.) up to
the work he produces today (Such as “Silent Mountain” from 2001)
Bill Violasartis madeusingelectronic, sound and image technology in new media focusingon the ideas of
human lifesuch as birth, death, emotions, and sex. He uses ultra-slowmotion and duality in his work to give
the viewer time to process the work and to create a juxtaposition between two themes.
Themes:birth, death, love, sex, grief, and redemption, emotion, duality.
Pipilotti Rist: Pipilotti Ristis a feminist,Swiss visual artistknown for creating“experimental” video art and
installation artsuch as “Pixel Forest”and “Pour Your Body Out.” Her works areusually shortand are related to
issues such as gender, sexuality, and the human body. Her works have been told to give out a feeling of
happiness to those who view her art. Her works also showthe several ways she perceives people, colour, and
feelings. She does this by creatingnarratives and then precisely choosing characters.Shealso does this by
manipulatingthe sound, speed, and colours in her videos.
Regularly in her work she uses colours to enhance the themes she is portrayingin her work. She also has been
seen to use repetition in her work to enhance a point sheis making, such as how she repeated things in her
1986 work “I'm not the girl who misses much” and in her 1996 work “Sip my ocean.” Not only these things but
she continuously uses women in her work which may be why her work has been viewed as feministby critics.
