Artist research and initial theme

1. Benjamin Garcia
1989 – Venezuela
Benjamin mainly focuses on portraits
with an aesthetic language that is dark
and subtly surreal, with an approach to
his subjects that is often subjective and
very intense.
His style is inspired by the nebulous and
unclear images of the mind and dream.
Nebulous: “In the form of a cloud or haze: hazy”.
Many of his paintings consist of dark colours and
tones, also large brush stroke which give the image a
lot of movement.

2. Vladimir Velickovic

1935 - Belgrade
Vladimir is one of the most prominent painters in
Serbia, being a classicist he stays true to his
materials, colour, impasto, line and drawing. A lot
of his work is dark and he focuses on giving us a
glimpse of the apocalyptic. When he paints heads
he removes anything which might recall an
identity, all are left wounded and empty.
The raven
Ravens symbolise death and are meant to be a
bad omen but also symobilse wisdom and

3. Gerhard Richter
My work - Acrylic paint on card and
newspaper
1932 - Germany
In 1962 Gerhard began making portraits which were copied
from found photographs. Using photographs as the basis for his
paintings aloud him to focus on colour, composition and
expression, his subject matter was wide and portraits began to
be his most dominant theme. Also this abstract paintings stood
out to me due to the colours and the technique he uses to do
such large scales pieces of work.

4. Jeff Harris
1978 Canada
Jeff is such an inspirational Photographer, everyday for the past 12 ½ years he
has taken a self portrait photograph. When he started in 1999 he said that
the images were boring and repetitive but the more he took the more
interesting they got. Unfortunately in November 2008 Jeff was diagnosed
with caner, but this did not stop him from carrying on with his photography.
He wanted to show people the struggle he went through and didn’t want to
be a patient 24/7, this made Jeff become obsessed with the notion of shock
and change.
Jeff’s work contains meaning and also interacts with the general public
allowing them to send him their own photographs which are all
displayed on his website.

5. Joachim Schmid & Vibeke Tandberg
1955 Germany 1967 Oslo
Joachim German photographer who based his photographic career on using
other people’s pictures. “Found photography” was a focus on our fascination
with using photography to document our existence, using photographs
which he found at markets or online he makes a collection of repetitive
imagery. He now has a collection of over 96 books each with a different
images such as People, food and Hotel Rooms etc. By putting the images into
themes he looks at our relationship with photography throughout the last
few generations and shows us how we continually repeat ourselves by taking
the same pictures.
Vibeke’s work focuses mainly on her own psychosocial relationship
with the surrounding world. She uses mainly photography and film to
deal with subjects like gender aspects, identity, female beauty, youth,
dreams and culture. As part of her work she repetitively uses herself
as the model in the majority of her images.

6. Self-
directed
My main focus for this project is human form, I am wanting to use both photography and painting to
capture emotions through body language. Looking at the way we move, shadows and different
colours also I will be keeping my work very abstract and trying to push myself to work on a large
scale.
