Reptiles first appeared nearly 280 million years ago and include turtles, crocodiles, and lizards and snakes. They have dry scaly skin, lay amniotic eggs with membranes to protect embryos, and show little maternal care once eggs are laid. Modern reptiles descended from early reptiles and vary widely in size, shape, color, habitat, diet, and behavior.
