1. Representation Analysis
Front Cover
The image portrays the artist as quite young and happy and this is shown by the elements of mise -
en-scene. The artist choice of costume shows that she’s wearing jeans and a button -up short which
shows that she’s modest and quite sophisticated. The setting of the image is also taken in a natural
environment which emphasises sincerity and pureness and could probably tie in with the cover story
‘Miley’s Magic Kingdom’. Miley also had a guitar as a prop in her photo. This represents that she has
a musical background and that the genre of the magazine is music. The image is taken from a long
shot which shows the model’s body language. The celebrity’s body language is quite casual which
represents that the artist is laidback and chilled which fits in with the magazine’s mode of address.
The font and typography on the cover also represent that the magazine is aimed at males
and represents the magazine as quite manly. The sans serif font are stereotypically a more masculine
style font and they appeal to the men more as opposed to women. This represents the gender of
the magazine as male orientated, however, this is contrasted within the magazine on the double
page spreads when serif font is used and a wider range of colours are used. The represents the
female gender as the font styles are seen as more feminine and appeal to women rather than men.
Contents Page
2. The images used on the contents page portray the artists in different ways. For example, the first
image in the top left hand corner portrays the group as very intimidating. Taken from a low angle it
presents the artists as intimidating and troublemakers and also powerful to the audience. This is
stereotypical as the setting they’re in also connotes crime and bad behaviour.
The next image in the middle shows a solo artist who is portrayed as quite innocent through
her use of body language. The low-key lighting and soft colour scheme represents her as a relaxed
and connotes her femininity. Her body language is also very poised and natural which may ref lect
her persona.
The top right image shows another band. They are represented as quite sophisticated as
shown through the black and white colour scheme on the photo. Like the first image, the angle of
the photo is low which makes them look powerful and threatening. The costumes that they are
wearing are all black and it looks like a leather texture. This represents that they are most probably a
rock genre group, which we associate with more aggression, which is reflected through the choices
of mise-en-scene within this photo.
The final image in the centre shows a male artist with a spotlight shining on him. The use of
the low-key lighting contrasting with the high key lighting shining on him represents him and his
significance. It also highlights his musical instrument on his lap, which suggests he has a passion for
music. The image also shows his body language – he is quite hunched over and is looking at the
musical instrument as opposed to the camera. This could represent him as timid and introverted or
that he cares about making music more than he does having fans etc. His costume shows him
dressed in jeans and a jacket, which represents him as quite casual and relaxed.
Double Page Spread
3. On the double page spread there are an array of artists of whom are represented through different
ways in the images. On the left page, there are three photos along the top third of the page. The first
image shows a young male holding a guitar with long, spike, crazy hair and an aggressive facial
expression. This represents him as a rock-style singer as he is stereotypically portrayed as aggressive
and looks very belligerent. The costume he is wearing shows him dressed in a shirt and a tie which
represent him as erudite and sophisticated.
The second image shows a female artist that is taken from a long shot. The photo is very
urban and shows her dressed in a very short outfit. This represents her as confident as she’s showing
off her body, but it also represents her sexually because she is showing of her body in a very
confident way. The low-key/ambient lighting also helps to represent her in a content way that
reflects her persona as an artist or person. Her body language represents her are in a provocative
way as she’s much posed within the photograph.
The third image shows two artists in very low-key lighting. The lighting has a red filter and
the red shining on them represents them as dangerous. They are also represented as very
mysterious and shady as the lack of lighting in the photo partially shows their faces. Their costumes
look like they are wearing polo shirts which represents them as quite casual. They also look like they
are wearing Fred Perry polos which are very 60s which may represent them as a retro genre group.
Finally, the image on the right hand page shows two regularly dressed people, a male and a female
in white tops and jeans. These people look like they are normal members of the general public as
they aren’t wearing eccentric clothing, the photograph looks like a normal person has taken it, and
overall they aren’t represented through an unusual way.
