1. Ben Howard
This picture reflects the indie/folk genre due to the
way in which he is dressed. His long hair and casual
shirt exploits a rural, more intimate connection
between artist and listener, which is emphasised by
the direct mode of address (medium close-up image
of him) and proxemics between artist and viewer.
The lighting, which instigates a contrast between
light and dark, reflects a powerful presence and a
sense of darkness within his music. More than half of
his face is dark, and the way in which it falls is jagged
and quite disoriented suggesting a sense of
brokenness. The black and white adds to this as
usually artists do this to resemble a classic rock
band, however it is used to portray a mysterious,
eerie representation of his music. The low key
lighting and the fact that you can’t see his face
represents a sense of shyness.
The 1975
The 1975 resemble a ‘bad-boy’ punk rock band, which
emphasises their music genre of alternative/indie rock.
The way in which they are dressed in dark clothing and
dark glasses supports the classic rock band of the 70’s
but their modern hairstyles and shoes suggest a modern
twist to their music. There is a clear symmetry with in
the band in the picture, and also the way in which they
look. However there is an indirect mode of address
suggesting a rebellious side, emphasised by the graffiti.
The proxemics between each of the band members are
evenly spaced, expressing equal status. For example,
some bands have a main band member that represents
the band, but in the photo they are all representing the
band. The low key lighting of the picture emphasises
mysteriousness about them, this is due to the fact that
no colour is used to express their personalities so they
are represented a being quite dark. This relates to their
music in the sense that
2. Foo Fighters
Foo fighters are a rock band that age around 30 years old. They
are a classic rock band due to their haircuts being long and
grunge like and their tattoos. However, they break the
stereotype of a roc band due to their proxemics. Two of the
band members are sitting down, looking at each other smiling
which could suggest a down-to-earth side to them. However,
the other band members are stood up behind the two sitting
down, suggesting dominance but also that they aren’t as in
focus as the tow in front who could be the singer and guitarist.
There is direct mode of address from the three band members
at the back which could emphasise an aggressiveness about
their music. Their physicality from all the band members are
broad and suggest dominance and rebellious.
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus is one of the biggest pop artists in
today’s society and also being one of the most
rebellious. This picture represent her thug-like
attitude due to her clothing. The darkness of the hat,
tank top and makeup indicates a darkness and
rebellious attitude. Her mode of address is off centre
and placed in rule of thirds. This suggests a loneliness
about her emphasising the fact that she isn’t in a
band and is on her own. The red of her lipstick
contrasts with the darkness of her clothes and the
pinks and purples of the background. Red has
connotations of power and strength, having a strong
association to emotions. She is represented as a
strong character and very dominating which is
emphasised by her proxemics. Her positioning is
casual but also thugs like which suggests the genre of
her music is pop and includes rap. This is instigated
by the gold chains which is commonly associated
with rappers.
