REPENTANCE
• What it is
Isa 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Matt 6:19-21 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and
where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure
is, there will your heart be also.
Acts 14:15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and
preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and
earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:
2Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.
Col 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
1Thess 1:9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye
turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay

and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that
dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to
repent:

Rev 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will
come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
Rev 2:16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my
mouth.
Rev 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore
thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon
thee.

Acts 11:18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God
also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

2Tim 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them
repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
• Christ came to call sinners to
(Matt 9:13) But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not
come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
• Christ exalted to give
(Acts 5:31) Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance
to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
• By the operation of the Holy Spirit
(Zech 12:10) And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of
grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn
for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness
for his firstborn.
• Called repentance to life
(Acts 11:18) When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath
God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
• Called repentance to salvation
(2Cor 7:10) For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the
world worketh death.

- The long-suffering of God
Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his
days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
1Pet 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of
Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
2Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering
to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
- The goodness of God
(Rom 2:4) Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing
that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
- The chastisements of God

1Kgs 8:47 Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent,
and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned,
and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;
Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of
refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 8:22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart
may be forgiven thee.

Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest
of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Acts 20:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward

• Not to be repented of
• The present time the season for
Ps 95:7-8 For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye
will hear his voice, 8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the
wilderness:
Prov 27:1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
Isa 55:6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
2Cor 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I
succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
Heb 3:7-8 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, 8 Harden not your
hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
Heb 4:7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day
if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
• There is joy in heaven over one sinner brought to
Luke 15:7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than
over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that
repenteth.
• Ministers should rejoice over their people on their
(2Cor 7:9) Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were
made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
• Should be evidenced by fruits
Isa 1:16-17 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to
do evil; 17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the
widow.
Dan 4:27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by
righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy
tranquillity.
Matt 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

Acts 26:20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of
Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for
repentance.

2Chr 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my
face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal
their land.
Jas 4:9-10 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to
heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Ezra 9:6-15 6 And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our
iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. 7 Since the days of
our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and
our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a
spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. 8 And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from
the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God
may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage. 9 For we were bondmen; yet our God
hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia,
to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us
a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. 10 And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have
forsaken thy commandments, 11 Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The
land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with
their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness. 12 Now therefore
give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace
or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an
inheritance to your children for ever. 13 And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our
great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given
us such deliverance as this; 14 Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the
people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that
there should be no remnant nor escaping? 15 O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet
escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee
because of this.
Jer 31:19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh:
I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.
Ezek 16:61 Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters,
thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant.
Ezek 16:63 That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more
because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord GOD.
Dan 9:7-8 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the
men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off,
through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have

trespassed against thee. 8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to

they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Jonah 3:5-8 5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from

from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he
caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles,

saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: 8 But
let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one
from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
Matt 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because
they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
