RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS
INTRODUCTION
• What is Religion?
Is a system of beliefs and rituals that serves to bind people
together through shared worship, thereby creating a social
group.
• What is Religious Institutions?
Religious Institutions are the visible and organized
manifestations of practices and beliefs in particular social
and historical contexts.Like human emotions and
attitudes, religious belief and practices project outward
onto the social and historical plan.
Major Religions of the World
Major Religions of Nepal
Religious Institutions and their beliefs influence
human behavior because every religion is
different , so their beliefs are also different
thus influencing overall health development
i.e.physical,mental,social and spiritual health.
The different religions and their
contribution for health development are
described as follows:
Religious Institutions and their
contributions for health development
1.Christianity
The most widespread
religion of the world.It is
based on the belief that
Jesus Christ was the son
of god and redeemer of
mankind.
The contribution of
christianity for health
development is
described as follows:
Good impact
• Christians are called to embrace science and
its biomedical applications in order to
prevent and alleviate unnecessary
suffering,whenever possible,while also
respecting the sancity of human life.
• Do not normally seek traditional health care.
• Believe that sickness, evil and sin are not
from god but of the mind.Illness and sin can
be changed by altering the thought.
• Provides psychosocial support in a group of
like-minded people which provides strength
when facing life’s crises and also healing
strength and support.
• Organ donation and transplants are possible.
Bad impact
• Normally, natural family planning is the only
acceptable method of birth control but not the use
of others family planning methods is allowed which
has various negative health impact on mother and
child.
• People dying because they believe their faith makes
them immune to make venom,or other lethal
aspects of reality.
• Women having septic abortions-or being force to
have ,unwanted children they resent-because
religious organization have gotten law passed
making abortion illegal or inaccessible.
• People dying – and letting their children die-
because their religion forbids accepting medical
help.
• The Jenovah’s witnesses, a branch of christianity ,in
which organ donation is not permitted, spirit and
body should not be separated.Prohibited from
receiving blood or blood products.
• The Adventist on the other hand believe that the
eating of certain food such as pork is unspiritual
and unholy which in effect turns to affect their
health conditions.
2.ISLAM
Followers of Islam are called
Muslims.Muslims believe that
the true word of god was
revealed to the prophet
Mohammad around 570
A.D.They are devoted to one
transcendent god and there is
no god but God(ALLAH).
The contribution
of Islam in health
development is described as
follows:
Good Impacts
Bad Impacts
• Family planning methods are strictly
prohibited.Abortion is not allowed, except it is for
medical reasons.
• During the month of Ramadan, according to the
muslim calendar all muslim fast by not eating or
drinking from dawn to sunset, which may cause
serious gastro intestinal problems.
• A female is not allowed for checkup by male
doctor, and only examined by a female doctor or
nurse.
• There is a system of wearing ‘Burkha’ by female which
cause them various health problems like
suffocation,deficiency of vitamin D ,etc.
3.Hinduism

Asian countries(mainly India and
Nepal). Hindus do not worship a
single person or deity but rather are
guided by a set ancient cultural
beliefs. They believe in the principle
of Karma,which is the wisdom.They
believe in the principle of karma,
which is the wisdom or health of
one’s eternal soul.
Good Impacts
Bad Impacts
• The ‘Bali’ system in hinduism is bad
affecting the life of various organisms and
man’s too.
• The fasting also leads to various
problems and also various types of
deficiencies related diseases.
• Avoiding and prohibition in eating meat
also the vegetables like garlic and onion
leads to folic acid deficiency leading to
imbalance in normal functioning of body.
• The self punishment system is also there
is hinduism with the belief that they will
be free from all the sins which leads to
