The word “ communication” has been derived
from the Latin word “ communis” which means
commonness.
• According to Keith Davis, “Communication is
the process of passing information from one
person to another.”
• In other words communication is the transfer
of information from one person to another
person. It is a way of receiving other by
transmitting ideas, facts, thoughts, feelings and
values.

9. Significance/role of communication in
effective organizational management
Communication requires in every human
interaction whether in the organizational context
and otherwise. The significance of communication
may be seen in term of various functions which it
performs.
A.Information exchange
Information is vital for functioning of any living
system, people or organization. Living system can
achieve some viability in their environments only
to the extent that they have some appropriate
means of acquiring and processing information
about themselves and their environment.
10. B. Command and instruction
Communication performs command and function
those whose are hiearchially superior whether in
family, business, civil or military. Health system
organization often initiate communication not only for
the purpose of informing their subordinates but often
for the purpose of telling them what to do, directing
them or commanding their behavior in some
ways/desired ways. Order, directives, request,
procedures even performance appraisal all function as
command message.
11. C. Influence and persuasion
Communication does not only influence
the people in the organization but also makes
change to them in a desired way to effective
organizational achievement. It is more
important than any other function of
communication. For eg:Directives, orders etc.

Communication performs the integrative
function by relating various components of
the organization and maintaining equilibrium
among them i.e served to keep the system in
operation and regulate interaction system.
13. Barriers in Communication
• Physiological Barriers – Hearing, speaking,
seeing, smelling and tasting.
Defect in these conditions result in poor
communication.
• Psychological Barriers - attitude, interest,
hate,fear,anger,jealousy, emotion,mental
condition,tension,anxiety,etc.

environment etc.
• Channels barriers-
– barriers due to problem in channel e.g.radio,telephone,written
documents,etc.
• Socio-Cultural barriers-
– Norms, values, beliefs, language, educational status etc

15. • Semantic barriers: Barriers due to language, use of
words or sentences, presentation problem,
understanding in false way or misunderstanding,
conflict, friction and poor performance etc. are
semantic barriers.
• Barriers due to individual nature:-Barriers due to
nature of individual personality, experience
bahaviour, talkative alcoholic, gentle, impressive etc.
