While raising two adolescent girls, this author is working on her Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree (PMHNP).
Psychiatric disorders within these professions are multifaceted and rising at an alarming rate. My most recent project is hosting a website for my non-profit organization, sharing my research and fundraising for mental health therapy for local MP and FRs; my efforts supported by their respective employers. During personal interactions, many have expressed to me that for psychological symptoms, they are directed to contact their respective employee assistance program (EAP). Unfortunately, combined with the already perceived stigma of seeking help, the true reluctance was the absence of an EAP clinician with first-hand experience in these unique occupations. These concerns significantly limit the number of “relatable” practitioners therefore, as a trusted partner, incorporating over 20 years of experience with MP and FRs, I will change this for all of us.

Although the use of spirituality and religiosity in social work intervention has
been growing over the past few decades, little information is available regard-
ing the supervisor’s contribution to this process. This article outlines some of
the difficulties inherent in the process and recommends twelve tasks required
of supervisors in facilitating the effective integration of spirituality in social
work practice. It also explores how each of these tasks relates to social work
values, ethics, and principles. Finally, it identifies policy implications related
to this process.
S
ince the 1980s, the social work profession has experienced a
renewed interest in spirituality and religion (Canda & Furman, 1999).
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics
mandates that social workers obtain education about and seek to understand
the nature of diversity and oppression with respect to religion (NASW,
2008). Current Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) standards re-
quire schools of social work to demonstrate their commitment to diversity
throughout their curriculum. Furthermore, graduates must demonstrate
competence in engaging diversity and difference in practice (CSWE, 2008).
While numerous definitions are offered for spirituality, religion, and
faith, no universally accepted definitions exist, and the terms are often
used interchangeably. Holloway and Moss (2010), as well as Spencer
(1961), one of the earliest social workers to offer a definition of spiritual-
ity, explain that spirituality is a broad concept that can include religion,
but also has a secular appeal. Canda (1997) offers the following definition,

been growing over the past few decades, little information is available regard-
ing the supervisor’s contribution to this process. This article outlines some of
the difficulties inherent in the process and recommends twelve tasks required
of supervisors in facilitating the effective integration of spirituality in social
work practice. It also explores how each of these tasks relates to social work
values, ethics, and principles. Finally, it identifies policy implications related
to this process.

ince the 1980s, the social work profession has experienced a
renewed interest in spirituality and religion (Canda & Furman, 1999).
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics
mandates that social workers obtain education about and seek to understand
the nature of diversity and oppression with respect to religion (NASW,
2008). Current Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) standards re-
quire schools of social work to demonstrate their commitment to diversity
throughout their curriculum. Furthermore, graduates must demonstrate
competence in engaging diversity and difference in practice (CSWE, 2008).
While numerous definitions are offered for spirituality, religion, and
faith, no universally accepted definitions exist, and the terms are often
used interchangeably. Holloway and Moss (2010), as well as Spencer
(1961), one of the earliest social workers to offer a definition of spiritual-
ity, explain that spirituality is a broad concept that can include religion,
but also has a secular appeal. Canda (1997) offers the following definition,

Black soldiers serving in the Philippines to put down the insurgency against the United States sent letters to African American newspapers relating their experiences on the islands. Some disheartened soldiers found that the color line extended far beyond the boundaries of the United States, while others saw action in the Philippines as a chance to prove their patriotism and their equality. The first and third letters below were published in the Richmond Planet on December 30, 1899, and December 22, 1900, respectively. The second letter was published in the Milwaukee newspaper Wis- consin Weekly Advocate on May 17, 1900.
