Region I
 The Spanish arrived in the 16th century and
established Christian missions and
governmental institutions to control the
native population and convert them to
Catholicism.
 The region was called by the Spaniards
“Ylocos” which meant from the “Lowlands”
 Before the formation of the Cordillera
Administrative Region, Region 1 also
included the provinces of Abra, Mountain
Province, and Benguet. Before Region 1 was
modified by Ferdinand Marcos, Pangasinan
was not part of the region.
 Came into existence on September 24, 1972 when
provinces of the Philippines were organized into 11
regions by Presidential Decree No.1 of the Integrated
Plan of President Ferdinand Marcos.
 Inhabitants are called ILOCANOS
 Inhabitants called their place “SAMTOY”
from “sao mi toy” which means
“OUR LANGUAGE HERE”

GEOGRAPHY
 Region I is located in the northwest of Luzon. In
its eastern borders are regions of Cordillera
Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley and
in the south is Central Luzon. To the west north
is the West Philippine Sea.
The region is composed of four provinces:
ILOCOS NORTE,
ILOCOS SUR,
LA UNION,
AND PANGASINAN.

Celebrated a day before ash
Wednesday in Paoay, Ilocos Norte.
The residents dressed in their Ilocano
costume adorned with antique
jewelries, dance and sing around the
town while being given the sign of the
cross instead of gray ash, pounded
rice is used.

Bacarra. A festival that highlights a
street dance parade participated in by
dressed up farmers with their
products, agro-industrial, trade fair,
contest of the biggest farm harvest
and livestock, “pinaka” contests agro
products.

Bangui Wind Farm, the first power generating windmill farm in
Southeast Asia.

The Sinking Bell Tower of Saint
William's Cathedral in Laoag City.
The structure is claimed to be the most solid
and tallest bell tower in the Philippines.
This massive 45-meter (150 foot) bell tower
was also built by the Augustinians in 1612.

was built in the 17th

Spanish colonial period.

 Semana Santa
St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral is
the venue of religious rites during the
Holy Week. The Good Friday
procession features decorated
carrozas bearing life-size statues of
Spanish vintage. On Easter Sunday,
the dawn celebration depicting the
Resurrection of Christ, called “Sabet,”
is a scene to behold.
Viva Vigan Arts and
Industry Festival
Every first week of May,
Vigan plays host to visitors
for this festival featuring
painting and product
exhibits, a Calesa parade,
and other cultural activities.
Tobacco Festival
Celebrated every last week
of March in Candon City, as
thanksgiving for the city's
bountiful harvest of tobacco.
ECONOMY
 The people are engaged in farming,
producing food crops, mostly rice, corn,
vegetable, root crops, and fruits.
 Non-food crops include tobacco, cotton,
and tigergrass.
 Cottage industries include loom weaving,
furniture making, jewelry making,
ceramics, blacksmithing, and food
processing.

 La Unión, "The Union" in Spanish, was formed in 1850 when
the Spanish colonial government of Governor-General Antonio
Maria Blanco merged the three southern towns of Ilocos
Sur province, the nine northern towns ofPangasinan, and the
western towns of Benguet to the east (Eastern Pais del Igorotes
in the Cordilleras). Pangasinenses were the majority in the new
province because most towns had been in the Province of
Pangasinan.
 On October 29, 1849, Governor General Claveria issued a
"promovido" to fuse the Pangasinan-Ilokos-Cordillera areas
into "La Union".

Agoo Semana Santa, La
Union
In the oldest town of La Union,
the life-size statues depicting the
Stations of the Cross are pulled
by devotees along the
processional roads during the
Good Friday procession. During
the Holy Week, the town people
of Agoo come up with religious
activities to make the occasion
more meaningful and sacred.
Feast of Our Lady of
Caysasay
The Filipino-Chinese
community in San Fernando
celebrates the Feast of Our
Lady by bringing the original
statue from Taal, Batangas to
the temple for the weeklong
activities held on the second
week of September which is the
5th day of August in the Lunar
calendar.
KILAWEN FESTIVAL
- Dec. 28 (San Fernando

Feast intended to let
everyone feel the spirit of
communal unity and
togetherness as one town
with a taste of good food
such as the “kilawen”of the
region and the country.
BUYBOY FESTIVAL
-The province produced
primarily buyboy, walis tambo or
brooms. So, they came up with
the idea of celebrating Buyboy
Festival in celebration of the
162nd founding anniversary of the
province.
-All women are the participants
in the parade. Young and senior
citizens paraded in their colorful
costumes accentuated by buyboy
and their graceful dance steps
ECONOMY
 La Union is known for its soft broom
industry. The economy is diversified with
service, manufacturing, and agricultural
industries spread throughout the province.
 The main livelihood of the people are: hand-
woven blankets (Inabel), soft brooms,
baskets, pottery, rice wine (tapuey),
sugarcane wine (basi), sugarcane vinegar,
wood craft, bamboo craft, native rice cakes,
antique-finish furniture, dried fish, honey,
and mushroom

Bolikewkew Rice Terraces
This rice fields located at Bolikewkew, Delles, Burgos is a peek of Banaue Rice
Terraces. The mountains surrounding these terraces are good venues for hiking
and mountain climbing.
Bauang Beach. Line along the fine grayish sand of Bauang
Beach are establishments providing accommodation and other
amenities from Baccuit to Pagdalagan. The beach is 6 kilometers south
of San Fernando City.
San Juan Beach. Approximately 8 kilometers north of San
Fernando City, the beach stretching from urbiztondo to Ili Norte is
dotted with tourism-related establishments. The surf in the area is ideal
for surfing during the months of November to February.

Pangasinenses and visitors alike

Pista’y Dayat. Revellers enjoy the
traditional offering of the mass on
the beach, fluvial parade, marathon
and the selection of "Lingas na
Dayat" with the event center at the
Lingayen Public Beach.

Mango-Bamboo Festival
is not just meant to be a festival or
entertainment event. It was called
Mango-Bamboo Festival because
the two products have a greater
chance to compete in the world
market.
Finally in April 2001, a strategy to
showcase the Mango-Bamboo
Festival was launched.
Bangus Festival
In celebration of the bountiful
harvest of milk fish in the area,
town comes live with activities
such as the longest grill, street
dancing and 101 ways of
cooking bangus.
“Mangunguna Festival”
In Bolinao “mangunguna”
means a fisherman. They
celebrate Mangunguna Festival
to give tribute to the fishing and
aquaculture industry of the
town, which is the number one
source of livelihood of the
community in Bolinao. It is a
one week celebration from April
9 to April 14.

The 1200 megawatt Sual Coal-Fired Power Plant, 345
megawatt San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam, and the Northern
Cement Corporation are all located in Pangasinan.
 Marine
Pangasinan is a major fish supplier in Luzon, and a major
producer of salt in the Philippines. It has extensive fishponds,
mostly for raising bangus, or “milkfish”, along the coasts of
the Lingayen Gulf and the South China Sea. Pangasinan’s
aquaculture includes oyster and sea urchin farms.
 Agriculture
The major crops in Pangasinan are rice, mangoes, corn, and
sugar cane. Pangasinan has a land area of 536,819 hectares,
and 44 percent of the total land area of Pangasinan is devoted
to agricultural production.
 Financial
Pangasinan has 593 banking and financing institutions.
 Labor
Pangasinan has a labor force of about 1.52 million, and 87
percent of the labor force are gainfully employed.

The Department of Trade and Industry in the Philippines

Pangasinan:

The Hundred Islands National Park is a national park in the Philippines. The
islands, totaling 124 at low tide and 123 at high tide, are scattered in Lingayen Gulf
covering an area of 16.76 square kilometres (6.47 sq mi). Only three of them have
been developed for tourism: Governor Island, Quezon Island, and Children's
Island.

  • 2.  The Spanish arrived in the 16th century and established Christian missions and governmental institutions to control the native population and convert them to Catholicism.  The region was called by the Spaniards “Ylocos” which meant from the “Lowlands”  Before the formation of the Cordillera Administrative Region, Region 1 also included the provinces of Abra, Mountain Province, and Benguet. Before Region 1 was modified by Ferdinand Marcos, Pangasinan was not part of the region.
  • 3.  Came into existence on September 24, 1972 when provinces of the Philippines were organized into 11 regions by Presidential Decree No.1 of the Integrated Plan of President Ferdinand Marcos.  Inhabitants are called ILOCANOS  Inhabitants called their place “SAMTOY” from “sao mi toy” which means “OUR LANGUAGE HERE”

  • 6. GEOGRAPHY  Region I is located in the northwest of Luzon. In its eastern borders are regions of Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley and in the south is Central Luzon. To the west north is the West Philippine Sea. The region is composed of four provinces: ILOCOS NORTE, ILOCOS SUR, LA UNION, AND PANGASINAN.

  • 11. Capital: Laoag City  Founded: 1818  Ilocos Norte has a total land area of 3,400 square kilometers.  Ilocos Norte has 557 barangays comprising its 21 municipalities and 2 cities.
  • 12.  Noted for being the birthplace of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.  Also known as a NORTHERN TOURIST DESTINATION.
  • 14.  Pamulinawen Festival, Ilocos Norte Featured are the floral and dance parade. Every February 10 (feast of St. William) in Laoag City. FESTIVALS • Guling-Guling, Ilocos Norte - March 8 Celebrated a day before ash Wednesday in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. The residents dressed in their Ilocano costume adorned with antique jewelries, dance and sing around the town while being given the sign of the cross instead of gray ash, pounded rice is used. • Farmer's Festival, Ilocos Norte - May 19 Bacarra. A festival that highlights a street dance parade participated in by dressed up farmers with their products, agro-industrial, trade fair, contest of the biggest farm harvest and livestock, “pinaka” contests agro products.

The province specializes in the following products and industries:  Agriculture - rice, corn, garlic, legumes, root crops, tobacco, and other fruits and vegetables  Fishery - tilapia and assorted fishes  Livestock - swine and cattle  Wind Power - Ilocos Norte's position on the northwest corner of Luzon makes it ideal for wind power generation. There is currently a 25 Megawatt wind farm in Ilocos Norte, and several more wind energy projects are being planned  Cottage industries - loom weaving, furniture, ceramics, iron works  Manufacturing and food processing - salt, empanada, bagoong, patis, basi (native Ilocano wine), vinegar, longganisa, chicharon, bagnet, chichacorn (cornick), jewelry, garments, cereal processing, packaging, mechanized processing equipment  Tourism  Pottery ECONOMY

  • 18. TOURIST ATTRACTIONS MUSEO ILOCOS NORTE It houses a large collection of Ilocano, Igorot and Itneg traditional clothing, household utensils, ceremonial objects and more. At the end of the hall is a split-level replica ilustrado (19th-century ancestral house).

  • 20. Bangui Wind Farm, the first power generating windmill farm in Southeast Asia.  15 wind turbines  each capable of producing electricity up to a maximum capacity of 1.65 MW
  • 21. The Sinking Bell Tower of Saint William's Cathedral in Laoag City. The structure is claimed to be the most solid and tallest bell tower in the Philippines. This massive 45-meter (150 foot) bell tower was also built by the Augustinians in 1612.
  • 22. Saint Augustine Church - commonly known as the Paoay Church - It is declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine government in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the collective group of Baroque Churches of the Philippines in 1993.

  • 26. Sarrat Church St. Monica’s Church in Sarrat is said to be the biggest church in the Ilocos Region. With its rich red-brick exterior, the church, belltower, and the nearby Sta. Monica rectory are very picturesque. The church was built in the 17th century during the Spanish colonial period.
  • 27. Ilocos Norte Favorites Bagnet No visit to Ilocos would be complete without eating bagnet — deep fried pork meat — that is the region’s signature dish.
  • 28. Fusion Pizza Fusion pizzas that use local specialties as pizza toppings – like Pinakbet Pizza and Dinuguan Pizza – are also served in popular restaurants like Saramsam Restaurant and Herencia Cafe.

  • 35. FESTIVALS  Semana Santa St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral is the venue of religious rites during the Holy Week. The Good Friday procession features decorated carrozas bearing life-size statues of Spanish vintage. On Easter Sunday, the dawn celebration depicting the Resurrection of Christ, called “Sabet,” is a scene to behold. Viva Vigan Arts and Industry Festival Every first week of May, Vigan plays host to visitors for this festival featuring painting and product exhibits, a Calesa parade, and other cultural activities. Tobacco Festival Celebrated every last week of March in Candon City, as thanksgiving for the city's bountiful harvest of tobacco.

ECONOMY  The people are engaged in farming, producing food crops, mostly rice, corn, vegetable, root crops, and fruits.  Non-food crops include tobacco, cotton, and tigergrass.  Cottage industries include loom weaving, furniture making, jewelry making, ceramics, blacksmithing, and food processing.

  • 50.  La Unión, "The Union" in Spanish, was formed in 1850 when the Spanish colonial government of Governor-General Antonio Maria Blanco merged the three southern towns of Ilocos Sur province, the nine northern towns ofPangasinan, and the western towns of Benguet to the east (Eastern Pais del Igorotes in the Cordilleras). Pangasinenses were the majority in the new province because most towns had been in the Province of Pangasinan.  On October 29, 1849, Governor General Claveria issued a "promovido" to fuse the Pangasinan-Ilokos-Cordillera areas into "La Union".

FESTIVALS Agoo Semana Santa, La Union In the oldest town of La Union, the life-size statues depicting the Stations of the Cross are pulled by devotees along the processional roads during the Good Friday procession. During the Holy Week, the town people of Agoo come up with religious activities to make the occasion more meaningful and sacred. Feast of Our Lady of Caysasay The Filipino-Chinese community in San Fernando celebrates the Feast of Our Lady by bringing the original statue from Taal, Batangas to the temple for the weeklong activities held on the second week of September which is the 5th day of August in the Lunar calendar. KILAWEN FESTIVAL - Dec. 28 (San Fernando City) Feast intended to let everyone feel the spirit of communal unity and togetherness as one town with a taste of good food such as the “kilawen”of the region and the country. BUYBOY FESTIVAL -The province produced primarily buyboy, walis tambo or brooms. So, they came up with the idea of celebrating Buyboy Festival in celebration of the 162nd founding anniversary of the province. -All women are the participants in the parade. Young and senior citizens paraded in their colorful costumes accentuated by buyboy and their graceful dance steps

They celebrate Mangunguna Festival to give tribute to the fishing and aquaculture industry of the town, which is the number one source of livelihood of the community in Bolinao. It is a one week celebration from April 9 to April 14.
