2. Region 1 or the Ilocos Region is composed of four
provinces —
Ilocos Norte - Northern Gateway of the Philippines/ Marcos Country
Ilocos Sur- Heart of Ilocandia/ Land of the Free
La Union-Surfing Capital of the Philippines
Pangasinan.
•It is located in the northwest of Luzon. In its
eastern borders are regions of Cordillera
Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley and in
the south is Central Luzon. To the west north is
the West Philippine Sea.

Farmers Festival

The legendary word “bac-bacarra” is a
specie of freshwater fish abundant in the
river during the 15th century which gave
birth to the town’s name .
7. 2. Guling- Guling Festival
Guling-Guling Festival is a traditional occasion that
happens yearly in the month of February in Paoay,
Ilocos Norte.
It is held before the Ash Wednesday or the start of
the season of Lent or also known as “Semana Santa”,
which begins 40 days prior to Easter. It is celebrated
as a the last day of merry-making and enjoyment for
the townspeople before the Lenten season.
This festival in Paoay, Ilocos Norte was introduced by
the Spanish friars in the 16th century during the olden
days of the Spanish regime. It was celebrated by the
religious sector as a way of interaction with their
members.
8. 3. Pamulinawen Festival
The Pamulinawen Festival is the annual fiesta of
Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
Held every early week of February, the fiesta
commemorates St. William the Hermit, the patron
saint of Laoag, whom residents believe the one who
saved Laoag from calamities.
Pamulinawen is the name of a woman made popular
in
the classic Ilocano song entitled, Pamulinawen.
"Pamulinawen” is the most popular song among
Ilocanos.
9. 4. Empanada Festival
The Empanada Festival of Batac was created to
showcase the city's famous delicacy, the Batac
Empanada.
Celebrating its eighth charter day on June 23,
the City of Batac will again host the annual
Empanada Festival highlighted by the Street
Dance Competition.
Participating are students clad in colorful
costumes of bright yellow, warm orange,
brown and green, and dancing to the upbeat
tune of Ciudad ti Batac.
10. 5. Sinait Garlic Festival
Sinait Garlic Festival was held during the 1st to
3rd of May that showcase the talent, ingenuity
and hard work trait of Ilocano Farmers in various
competition form.
It is said that primary objective of the festival to
give recognition to garlic farmers, it also aims to
form and educate visitors and local residents on
the importance of the garlic industry to
Philippine economy.
11. 6. Viva Vigan Festival
o A grand celebration of the
town’s cultural heritage takes
place in the first week of May.
There is street dancing, a
fashion show, a kalesa parade
and, of course, lots of food.
o It promotes awareness of the
value of the historic town,
which was hoped to
strengthen resolve to preserve
and protect this heritage site
12. 7. Longaniza Festival
Longganisa Festival is the first festivity
celebrated in Vigan every year which
usually happens every 22nd of January,
the date of the cityhood of Vigan
Over the past years, the Viva Vigan
Festival has become one of the biggest
cultural events in the North, attracting
domestic and foreign visitors who
come to Vigan on a pilgrimage to our
heritage.
13. 8. Bangus Festival
The Bangus Festival is an
annual celebration in the
city of Dagupan. It
highlights the city’s rich milk
fish aquaculture industry in
the province of Pangasinan
and in the country.
14. Natural Resources
The region is a producer of food surplus – rice, corn,
vegetables, rootcrops and fruits such as mangoes.
It has abundant natural resources such as limestone for
cement, feldspar for ceramics, fruits, vegetables, fish,
poultry, and forest products such as bamboo and rattan.
Other mineral resources include copper, gold, chromite,
iron, manganese and silica.
It has one of the longest coastlines, aside from numerous
rivers and streams. It has extensive fishing grounds and
excellent prospects for fishpond cultivation.

The Port of San Fernando operates

airbase Wallace Air Station, having

Agriculture - The major crops in Pangasinan
are rice, mangoes, corn, and sugar cane.
Energy - The 1200 megawatt Sual Coal-Fired
Power Plant, and 345 megawatt San Roque
Multi-Purpose Dam
Marine - Pangasinan is a major fish supplier in
Luzon, and a major producer of salt in the
Philippines.
Financial - Pangasinan has 593 banking and
financing institutions.

18. Cultures and Tradition
Death Tradition
Money is placed in the coffin. This serves as a pay to
the“ferry man” who takes the soul to the other world.
Before the burial, relatives conduct a vigil around the
body. Those who attended the burial in the cemetery
must return to the deceased’s home by taking a different
route from the one they’ve taken to get there. Upon
arrival,
they must wash their faces and hands. It is said to remove
the power of death
Clothing
Ilocanos are very meticulous when it comes to clothing.
Everyday wear consists of short pants for boys, and
dusters, loose skirts, shirts, and short pants for girls.
Farmers wear longsleeved shirts, long pants, and wide-
